In 1999, British Gas estimated 1.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 1.7 billion barrels of oil off Gaza’s coast. Palestinians have seen none of it. If Israel fully seizes Gaza, depopulates it, and annexes it, it takes the resources. Just like it already did with the West

Ukrainian children are being displayed online like products. This must stop! The Russian occupation administration has launched a chilling online catalog of Ukrainian orphans, displayed openly on the web. These children are presented like products in an e-commerce store,

@_JamieMcIntyre I use the wonderful @HLHArchives centre here in Inverness for book research, and came across some interesting entries in the school records for Embo (near Dornoch). 🧵

The top stories for exam results this year were falling pass rates and record-high attainment gaps at N5, Higher & Advanced Higher. But there are lots of other exam stats, so today I'm diving in for @heraldscotland https://t.co/knDFhWHIxv

@HighlandCouncil So many community interest companies fighting for the dregs at the bottom of the public funding barrel, while Summer Isles Enterprises Ltd (registered in Wiltshire) set the pace for their model village development, unhindered by waiting around for grants to come through. (8/8)

@HighlandCouncil Am I raging? Maybe I'm raging because community-owned estates have to fight tooth and nail to fund jobs in fragile rural economies, but if you have the wealth of the City behind you, you can pay people £150,000 to do cool stuff like drystone walling, pointing, pathbuilding. (7/8)

@HighlandCouncil On the island itself, paying guests can "find respite" in activities "such as potato planting and collecting kelp with ponies". A little bit of Gaelic poverty roleplay before the 1% heads in to their renovated blackhouse for the night. (6/8)

@HighlandCouncil and that this was all the vision of "one man", a story-gone-wrong countless times in the Gàidhealtachd (Leverhulme *cough*). Predictably, there's a carrot: Wace is creating 150 jobs on Tanera, some of the only jobs in Coigach which aren't AirBnB changeovers or hospitality. (5/8)

Planning permission for some of the buildings wasn't even sought before work started, but @HighlandCouncil relented, as they predictably would when faced with this much capital. Locals voiced concerns about "who would be allowed to go" to Tanera (4/8)

The story of Tanera Mòr is the story of so much of the Gàidhealtachd. Land is bought at a price tag beyond the reach of mere mortals and most community trusts. A vision is laid out: in this case, retreats for the elites. These will require accommodation and services. (3/8)

as it was purchased in 2017 by financier/former investment banker Ian Wace, Britain's 221st wealthiest person with a net worth of £630 million as of 2020. Considering the rapid upward flow of money since the pandemic, we can only surmise that net worth has increased since. (2/8)

https://t.co/r6sYI2dRD9 Tanera Mòr appeared in the papers again, recently. Articles in previous years mentioned "superwealth sweeping into island" (1/8)

The largest of the Summer Isles was bought by millionaire Ian Wace in 2017 and is being transformed beyond compare.

This is so alarming. If officers at @cne_siar can’t even admit the reality of the situation then we have a big problem. Now a minority language in the WI - what exactly is CNES doing to help outside Education?

Russia’s occupying forces in Bakhmut just published on one of their Telegram channels new video footage and photos of the eastern Ukrainian city almost a year after it was destroyed and captured. The photos are stomach-churning and I admit they fill me with rage. I’ll post them
