Protein per se is not the issue; it clearly must be something in plants (or not) or something in animal proteins (or not). However, higher SES is generally associated with better health behaviours, which are often related to more plants and plant protein. I doubt animal = plant.

@mackinprof I suspect plant protein probably correlates with an overall better diet, meaning more fiber, polyphenols, etc. If we could isolate the effects of each type of protein, could animal = plant?.

In isocaloric swaps, replacing carbs and fats with protein boosted the odds of healthy aging by 22–58%. More (plant) protein = longer, healthier life?. #HealthyAging #PlantProtein #NutritionScience #Epidemiology #WomensHealth.

Results: For every 3% increase in energy from protein, the odds of healthy aging rose by:.• Plant: +38%.• Dairy: +14%.• Animal: +7%.• Total protein: +5%. Only plant protein was consistently linked to better physical function and mental health in older age.

Can midlife protein intake shape how well you age?. A 30-year study of 48,762 women: higher protein intake—especially plant protein—associated with a greater likelihood of healthy aging. Healthy aging = no major disease & good mental, cognitive, and physical function.

📊 The mortality risk from low protein intake was:. ↑ in people with albuminuria (HR 1.81).↑ in non-diabetics (HR 1.57).↑ when carbs <55% or fat <40% of calories. ⚠️ Protein intake <0.8 g/kg/day may be risky, even in "healthy" kidneys. NHANES 2003–2010 | Follow-up: 4.7 yrs.

💀 Cutting protein too much may backfire. This NHANES study (n=7,730, eGFR ≥60) found that eating <0.8 g/kg/day of protein was linked to a 39% higher risk of death. 📉 Low protein ≠ better survival. 🧾 🔗 DOI: 10.1111/ijcp.13505.

>57% of older men consumed less than the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 0.8 g/kg/day. Those below RDA had 58% greater cancer mortality risk vs those ≥1.0 g/kg/day. 🔑 Take-home: Increase your protein intake in older age—it may be life-saving.

🚨 Study of 5,790 older men (~74 y) found that low protein intake—regardless of source—was linked to higher all-cause mortality. 📉 Each 2.9% drop in protein (% of energy) = 9% ↑ risk of death. ⚠️ Cancer mortality especially elevated. 📄 DOI: 10.1007/s12603-020-1422-4.

Any actual human data supporting low(er) protein intakes and protein 'deprivation' as having any consequential effect on human health? "Too much" protein is a relative term. 0.8 was set using a crummy method! Perhaps @nntaleb would like to read

Medical data alert. There is no evidence-based backing to such Attia-like recommendation of > .8 g (see @EricTopol). Too much protein hinders, among other things autophagy; episodic protein deprivation is present in many protocols (e.g. Valter Longo's).
