Stunned and humbled even to have been nominated, let alone win this award. Biggest thanks
@RoyalPhilSoc
and panel, I am profoundly grateful for this recognition. Sending all my love from Munich and raising a 🍺♥️
The winner of the RPS Young Artist Award is
@lottebettsdean
. 'She's a visionary performer, blazing through so much daring repertoire, and plunging into one bold collaboration after another.'

Really sad to hear that the brilliant
@RevRichardColes
has basically been forced to leave his R4 Programme due to it being (inexplicably) moved to Cardiff, and that after 12 years the Beeb barely bothered to announce his departure. Can they please just stop ruining everything
To all the musicians who can’t bring themselves to make or listen to any music, especially fellow singers who for whatever reason just can’t face singing right now: despite your social media feeds full of homemade music videos, you are definitely not alone. And it’s okay. ❤️
Jump on
@LBC
right now for the extremely important rant about arts and class from
@mrjamesob
that we’ve all been waiting for. “Why the *flip* should Angela Rayner not go to the opera? Where does that come from? Empathy is the enemy of fascism.”
It was an honour to be part of Remembrance Sunday at The Cenotaph yesterday, and even more so as the first *ever* female choir member to sing at that most moving and solemn of National moments.
Thank you to HM Chapel Royal for allowing me to make a tiny bit of British herstory.
As you may have seen on the news and several websites, my father Brett has been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Adelaide. He is in high spirits and expected to make a full and swift recovery. Thank you to everyone who has sent messages of support. 🙏🏼

Are other areas of the BBC also being targeted or is it just classical music? I’d be very surprised if they reduced the budget or salaries for Strictly, for instance, or anything to do with sport (which is definitely also entertainment, not news)
Not understanding that British amateur choirs and the British professional music industry go hand in hand = not understanding the fundamentals of British culture
London, one of the biggest and most important cities and cultural centers in the world, if not THE most important, with a population of 10 million and many many millions more in tourist visitors. They definitely don’t need more than one functioning opera house, no. No no.
So the pitifully measly reparations Alex Woolf has to pay his victims will cover only one hour of therapy each. Meanwhile he will receive 40 hours’ worth in the name of rehabilitation. What is wrong with this picture
It’s not every day Dame Joanna Lumley accompanies you all the way to the Yorkshire Dales 😍
She’s on the way up to Kirkcaldy for her own festival event — if you’re in the Fife area, go and see her tonight!
Something extraordinary happened yesterday on the way to a concert on Orpheus. Perhaps the greatest gig perk ever?
A pod of beautiful migrating humpbacks joined us for the ride. Absolutely astonishing. 🐋
“So what are you doing in Orkney?”
“I’m performing at the festival here, I’m a singer.”
“What, are you like a famous pop star?”
“Ah not really, I do mostly classical music.”
“Like Elvis?”
Let’s go with that.
Would love if composition competitions/composer schemes were judged blind, like orchestral auditions. Leave gender out of it altogether, let merit show itself
It’s ONE MILLION A YEAR. Don’t make a massive, irreversible cultural error for ONE MILLION. The work they do is worth so much than that. Let them have it for christs sake
Very thrilled to share that I’ll be making my debut at
@bay_staatsoper
next season as Vlasta in Mieczysław Weinberg’s DIE PASSAGIERIN (1968) conducted by Vladimir Jurowski and directed by Tobias Kratzer.
Performances in March + July 2024!
People listen to Sat Live BECAUSE of him, I certainly do. He is the perfect host. Start new shows in Cardiff, sure — but don’t prioritize that over beloved presenters. BBC Management’s disdain for its own (irreplaceable) talent and quality is getting out of control.
Feeling sick to the stomach for the arts orgs who have had *critical* ACE funding cut or axed altogether today. The audacity of the Gov making this all look like a good thing?! There is some good, yes, but a lot of extremely sad news today as well. I am so sorry and frightened.
Another gig bites the dust next month, thanks to the delayed reopening (venue now unable to be at full capacity). Surprisingly shattered, not so much because of the loss of the gig/income, but because of the ongoing uncertainty this cancellation represents. It’s so exhausting
Speaking of
#Strictly
, during the stars’ introductions the brass in the live band forgot to modulate with the rest of the band for 2 bars and it MADE MY ENTIRE DAY
Sad to hear that the great Renata Scotto is gone. I am really not one for bel canto repertoire, but this performance of this aria, even just the opening note, sends chills down the spine every time. It is just absolutely *chefs kiss*.
Some exciting news today, on my birthday no less! Delighted to be joining the
@BrittenPears
Young Artists for 21-22 alongside some fab ensembles, composers, pianists and fellow singers. 👇🏼
@BrittenPearsYAP
Introducing our Britten Pears Young Artists for 2021-22.
This exciting new cohort brings together two ensembles, six composers, six singers and three pianists for a year of creativity and collaboration.
Meet the BPYAPs here:
Last week I found this lovely round rock on Aldeburgh Beach which has remained in my coat pocket. The hand fits perfectly around it and its weight is oddly comforting. En route to the Eurostar now and I’ve just realized that yes, I am taking a pet rock overseas with me
I am completely overjoyed to be joining
@RayfieldAllied
for worldwide management, working with the utterly brilliant
@steller_megan
. Thanks and love to the entire RA team for welcoming me to the family — here’s to an exciting new chapter ahead. ♥️
If you have any live performances in the UK at the moment, *please* take the opportunity to publicly decry the axing of
@BBCSingers
and call for public support for them and ACE-defunded orgs like
@BrittenSinfonia
. This is a crisis and now is the time to use our voice + platform.
Bit of a special afternoon on Tuesday, being made Associate of the
@RoyalAcadMusic
(ARAM) in this year’s Honours Ceremony.
Massive congrats to the other honorands — especially lovely to see a few pals from my time there. Thank you RAM for this lovely recognition. ♥️
just told a guy who was hassling a young woman to stop, which led to the verbal abuse being directed at me instead - “this is how girls like you get hurt” - which is fine, i can hack it. what isn’t fine is that none of the men in the packed carriage said or did anything to help
Happy 60th birthday to the absolute GOAT
@brettdeanmusic
!! It has been so incredibly special to be able to celebrate with a new piece together. 🎂 🥳 🎉 🎼
Thanks to
@Boosey
for the pic + to
@OxfordLieder
/Festspiele MV/
@ArmidaQuartett
for commissioning ‘Madame ma bonne sœur’!
Hello! Another little art song call out… looking for songs about death, new and old, particularly interested in works by women composers. Would love to discover some new things!
Team Dean! Absolutely thrilled for
@brettdeanmusic
who won the
@IvorsAcademy
Chamber Ensemble Award last night, for ‘Madame ma bonne sœur’. I’m very proud to have brought this incredible piece to life with the amazing
@ArmidaQuartett
and can’t wait for its next outing.
#TheIvors
My newest album, a collaboration with Michael Finnissy,
@MarsyasTrio
,
@joseph_havlat
+
@DivineArtRecord
has received a lovely 5⭐️ review and been selected as Chamber Choice in the May issue of
@MusicMagazine
!!
“LBD’s elegantly inflected delivery is particularly compelling.” 🥹
Just got off the plane to see the completely devastating news about
@BBCSingers
. This is a cultural crime. Feeling awful and deflated for all those brilliant people… and for all of us, really. Can’t believe it
I’m so delighted and touched to have been elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in this year’s
@RoyalAcadMusic
Honours. Looking forward to the ceremony and congrats to all 2022 honorands! 🙌🏼
We're delighted to announce our 2022 honorands, including
@Lin_Manuel
, Semyon Bychkov, Dame Patricia Routledge and Cynthia Erivo.

The Young Artist Award is for an outstanding individual artist or chamber ensemble, relatively new to the profession, who has made a strong impression.

Here is this year's shortlist...
Káťa Kabanová with
@londonsymphony
and Sir Simon - totally arresting, shattering and overwhelmingly beautiful.
This piece slays me every time but tonight was something else.
Very sad to hear we’ve lost the wonderful Sir Andrew Davis, such a shining light of enthusiasm and positivity in this industry. I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to work with him +
@MelbSymphony
in 2019 on one of his fave pieces. A beautiful conductor and delightful human.
I really really fucking hate that I now get worried about, and feel like I actively have to avoid, walking alone in the dark. I hate it. I am a grown-ass woman and I should be able to walk anywhere I damn please at any time without feeling any fear or having to adjust my plans.
Announcing a new album of vocal chamber music by the living legend that is Michael Finnissy! It was a joy to record this beautiful and intimate collection of works with
@MarsyasTrio
and
@joseph_havlat
— releasing March 15 on
@DivineArtRecord
.

The
#ROHGrimes
buzz is so loud I can hear it from the Netherlands. Now realizing how lucky I am to have nabbed one of the last seats in the gods for Wednesday and I *cannot* wait
If you have to lose your hearing, sitting in the 2nd row for
@billorcutt
electric guitar quartet is a pretty great way to do it. Amazing gig. thx
@KingsPlace
Extremely elated to have survived my first performance of Peter Maxwell Davies’ 50-min super-intense monodrama THE MEDIUM (after a hellish travel day!) Thank you
@stmagnus
@alasdairnic
for bringing this piece back to where it was premiered in ‘81. An honour to perform it here! 🙏🏼
The first opera I ever saw, at the tender age of 7, was Boris Godunov. The musical and emotional intensity was so thrilling I was actually shaking, and no it’s not because I was allowed the otherwise forbidden Coca-Cola at interval. Insisted on seeing the next performance as well
(2/2) I just want to confirm here that his immediate family (my mother, my sister and me) have not been in direct contact with him for 15 days, and have been cleared of any risk by the NHS. So it's business as usual for me! Please send Brett all your positive energies!
LBD ❤️
Absolutely blown away by the love and generosity of the audience
@wigmore_hall
tonight —so many wonderful pals in the crowd, thank you all. Over the moon. Biggest thanks to
@ArmidaQuartett
,
@brettdeanmusic
, Schumann, Janáček and of course Marie, Queen of Scots 🏴
Very very relieved and glad to hear this — but we should never have been in this situation in the first place. What a stupid waste of time and a PR nightmare for the BBC. Now fix the rest, ASAP.
Someone has hacked a portable speaker on the tube and is broadcasting fart noises. The entire, extremely packed carriage is in collective stitches. It’s not even very funny but it turns out laughter is infectious?
!!!!!! What a day indeed!! Absolutely over the moon to have won, alongside Ema, Gary and of course my brilliant partner in crime Joseph. Yay.
#FollowTheLieder
#OxfordLieder2019
What a day! 6 absolutely exceptional duos performed their socks off.
The results are in and we’re delighted to announce that the 2019 Young Artist Platform winners are Lotte Betts-Dean
#mezzo
& Joseph Havlat and Ema Nikolovska
#mezzo
& Gary Beecher. Congratulations!!
This. Also live performance is great but weird & sometimes wonky/flawed & it’s just not great that stuff could end up online that we as performers really don’t want there. Let live be live plz. If we want to film/share, that is our (performers/composer/publisher etc) decision
If I - a performer - want to share a clip from a concert with an ensemble, I have to get permission from all the players. If the piece is in copyright, there are big hoops (+ money) with publishers. How did we get from there to current discourse without any in between steps?
So delighted to have won the Audrey Strange Memorial Prize at
@ROSLARTS
AMC last night!
Huge congrats to
@SianDicker
who won the Singers Prize... in an all-female final! 💕👏🏼🎼
It makes little sense for cinemas to reopen but theatres to remain closed — everyone in the performance sector is *chomping at the bit* to make socially distanced performances happen. PLEASE
@OliverDowden
give concert halls + theatres a chance, we need help more than Hollywood!
this is not new information now but my god
#rohgrimes
is phenomenal. shaken to the core. a dream cast led by the incomparable
@fatboyclayton
and orchestra on top form. and huge thanks
@mrkoponen
for one helluva seat upgrade 🙏🏼
If you’ll permit me this indulgence, may I present Marie Reine D’Écosse 👑 It was an honour to channel her at
@OxfordLieder
on Wednesday for the WP of
@brettdeanmusic
‘Madame ma bonne sœur’ — she’ll be back next week for the German premiere at Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern!
Attention all Aussies (and non Aussies!) in London. I am helping to organize a big Fire Benefit for
@RedCrossAU
to take place at the
@RoyalAcadMusic
on March 1. If you would like to be involved onstage, backstage or with fundraising efforts, please DM me. 🇦🇺
Extremely pleased to be the newest Ambassador for
@Donne_UK
, a wonderful charitable foundation dedicated to supporting women in music and gender equality across the industry.
Saturday in Leeds and approx 50% of the population is outside, sunburnt and drunk. I’ve just held a stranger’s hair back for her. It’s 4pm. What a town
60 hours of carol gigs COMPLETE. 🎉 Only juuust crawled over the finish line tonight after getting a non-Covid cough and singing through it coz there are no deps left in this world. Shout out to the last few standing out there, you got this. ✊🏼
LBD out. ♥️
@JWHallBaritone
Wild! I totally get it if people want to lose the masks now (at your own risk of course) but to force it is weird. Mask wearing was rare pre-pandemic but hand sanitizer?! Ffs. Why don’t they just throw out all their detergent and kitchen spray while they’re at it
Can’t really let go of the fact that Liz will now get £115,000 per annum for the REST OF HER LIFE as a nice reward for spending 44 days completely fucking up her job
Programme launch day for Aldeburgh Festival 2022! Thrilled to be part of the festival presenting an exciting programme for solo amplified voice and electronics/tape, including a few new commissions.
Bring it onnnn 🎤 + congrats to team
@BrittenPears
!!
Once again dumbfounded how people sit on the tube (in this case between Baker + St John’s Wood) and don’t block their ears when it screeches. The decibel level is actually painful. What is wrong with you all
Well, even if the Pr*ms won’t acknowledge the centennial of Luigi Nono, at least
@TheCIMF
will! Me and a quadriphonic sound system will perform ‘La fabbrica illuminata’ (1964) tomorrow, alongside a chamber song cycle by Australian composer Larry Sitsky:
Good evening to everyone except
@Qantas
who refused to let my brilliant
@vandiemensband
colleague board with her priceless baroque harp because it was a measly 800g overweight, forcing her to remove the wheels and pray that someone has a screwdriver at the other end. Shameful.
