Morphology Masterclass Online Course feedback:
"This was really insightful and helpful. I’ve learnt to approach words from a morphemic point of view rather than syllable types."
THAT's what I'm talking about. 😄
I have struggled with posting something so personal, as I do use this account for professional purposes, but I think it's okay to commemorate my firstborn's passing three years ago today because she was just so cool.
Love to Chloe.
Announcing our newest, fiercest character: The Decoding Dragon!

NZ FRIENDS: Morphology without parts of speech is like astronomy without a telescope: It’s quite pretty, but you never really get to see the detail or understand the whole system. Language for Life in CHCH and AKL!

By the way, I did not make this chart. It is a picture from a Facebook page I belong to called "Pie Charts, Venn Diagrams and Some Keiths". It's quite funny. You should check it out. The author of this gem is called Stephen N Marshland.
The letter-sound myth: a thread
If there's one thing I want to help move the needle on this year it's the myth that all letters in English writing represent sounds. It's false and has teachers and students stewing over irrelevant questions.

Maryanne Wolf’s retort to anyone crying “drill and kill”:
Actually what I’m doing is giving multiple exposures to the visual word form area of the visual cortex.
Boom!
Six yeas ago my firstborn, my darling, strange but true Chloe was feeling really unwell. I coated her in blankets but she was either too hot or too cold. Finn did his best to help, as any good boy would. Two weeks later, she left us forever.
Reading Recovery is finally getting the exposure it deserves. It's trending here on Twitter. Let's get
#ReadingRecoveryFails
trending too.
I'll start by reposting my account of the first time I saw a Reading Recovery lesson. Check the comments too.
It's a wrap!
5 free webinars and 4 free spelling lessons all uploaded and ready for viewing.
Thank you to everyone who came and cheered me on. See you next week!
Fountas and Pinnell are doing a series of incoherent rambles to try to damage-control their growing unpopularity.
For a pair of people so intent on "meaning", would it not be fair to ask them the meaning of "orthographic mapping"?
Today we lost a giant in education research. Zig Engelmann brought incomparable richness to this field.
I wrote to him a couple of years ago for a comment on the reading wars and I still treasure his response. RIP Zig.
Moderating my Reading for Life online course and failed to notice autocorrect had me addressing a participant called Sevy as "Sexy".
My message began, "Hello Sexy," and then went into some stuff about reading and now I have to leave the country and I will not return.
I am being tested beyond limits I didn't know existed right now by a criminal and a stalker. But I WILL come through it.
If I seem a little distracted and unresponsive right now, you know why.

Just had time to watch the recent webinar about shifting from F&P to higher quality instruction.
@DrMPaff
summed benchmarking up perfectly:
“My ethical code would prevent me from using F&P benchmarking.”
Precisely. F&P is not fit for purpose.
Sixteen free spelling lessons done and dusted. I will never charge for these, but if you like what you see, you can always sign up for my paid courses and keep me in Peter Alexander pyjamas for the rest of my days.
NEW BLOG:
It's been ages since I posted a blog, but in response to some of the responses I'm getting to my recent TV appearance calling for
#structuredliteracy
, along the lines of "low literacy is caused by bad parenting", I felt compelled to write this.
I've been thinking a lot about orthographic mapping, and to deepen my understanding of it I've made this video for the
#ReadingForLife
online course. I'm too close to it to know if I've done a good job, so I'm putting it up for critique here:
Was feeling a little sad and anxious yesterday, knowing I have to postpone talks in the coming weeks.
Offered a free webinar.
Woke up on my birthday with 321 enrolments from India to Singapore, all across the US and the UK, Australia and NZ.
Sadness and anxiety obliterated! 😃
Now that the materials for the
#Morphology
Masterclass are done and dusted (and that was a LOT!), I can turn my mind to a new project this weekend.
I've been approached by a large publishing company to produce a morphology book for kids. Doing some sample content as we speak! 😀
Just interrupting my Christmas break to let everyone know that today the stalker was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, 60 hours of unpaid community work and to pay back the $45,000 he stole from the bank. Turns out stalking wasn't the only thing he was up to.
Stalker update:
Refused bail today, with the magistrate stating that in light of his "seriously nasty" behaviour, his additional dishonesty charges, & his flight risk, he gets to stay right where he belongs: behind bars.
I'm looking forward to a relaxing weekend in the sunshine.
If you are using

Announcing the Science of Learning, Reading and Writing Masterclass series!
Agreed! This point in itself shows the difference between those who know how to teach reading and those who don't. "Avidity" is not something that teachers are capable of producing or measuring. Proficiency is. Focus on that.
@KJWinEducation
I don’t agree with
@LucyCalkins
that our job is to produce “avid” readers. Let’s produce *proficient* readers who decide for themselves what they want to be avid about.
I also think it’s messy when we’re told BL includes phonics but it’s then contrasted w phonics 🤔

Adding phonics to a curriculum otherwise not grounded in the findings of the last 2 decades of cognitive science is not enough.
Inspired by my lovely mini-break here, I'm thinking of returning to the Gold Coast in May for a one day workshop like the very successful one set for March in Sydney. Want a say in date and subject?
Look, I'm the last one to gush, but I really do have a strong affinity for this person. I'm deeply honoured to know her and I am absolutely unsurprised by the fact that she is adored and revered worldwide.
An inspiration to one and all.
This isn’t funny. If you’re working with children who do this, your system has:
1. Created instructional casualties
2. Promoted learned helplessness
3. Not even gone near how to teach and learn ‘irregular’ high-frequency words
4. Failed

From a principal who just learned about othrographic mapping on his school's tailor-made course:
"When I think about my children bringing home PM books and parents told to prompt children to look at pictures and guess words, I could just cry..."
So anyway it’s St Patrick’s Day and 50 years ago around about now, my mum gave birth, in the middle of a tropical storm, in Singapore, to a person who just learned to take mirror selfies while wearing Peter Alexander Golden Gaytime shorts.
The trailblazing Dept for Ed in South Australia has made my keynote address on spelling available to share.
I thank them for their dedication to best practice & their long-standing commitment to high quality literacy instruction for all children.

@ChalkBoardRev
If you, as a teacher, don't know how to teach reading well, kids struggling in reading class is on YOU. If your students' progress is reliant on their home life, then you're not doing your job AND you're ultimately discriminating against the most vulnerable members of society.

The quality of this man’s work is matched only by his extraordinary generosity. Do yourself a favour and take some time to view and incorporate these resources.
I've made a blog-post where all the resources I've shared - from science curriculum documents to tier two vocabulary lists - can be downloaded. Help yourself!
20 freaking years of development, and this diagram gets 15 likes. One diagram featuring the Backstreet Boys and an algebra pun and it goes viral. Perhaps I AM the boring loser my children keep trying to convince me I am. 😂
Tinkered with my practice setup in preparation for the launch of the Language Arts Online course on Monday. The affixes now match the morphology scope and sequence. I'm rather fond of it if I do say so myself.
Officially submerged in second edition writing for Spelling for Life. I can't believe I didn't know about orthographic mapping and self-teaching when I first wrote this book. Just cited David Share and he sent me a kind message in return. Today is a good day.

This is really good. When all I did is work with children, I used to feel that teachers were responsible for the devastation wreaked by BL. Now that my students are teachers, I know they aren’t the the right target.
I guess a lot of people wanted the answer to my presentation topic question at

& I will present on it soon:
Well I’m just spoilt (and very very touched). It was my birthday on Friday for about 2 hours before I flew into another time zone so the beautiful Myrtleford folks organised this cake and sang me Happy Birthday at morning tea today! 🥹
High school intervention staff:
Just a gentle reminder that if you're using a foundational phonics program intended to help students master a basic level of decoding, but are hoping this improves their spelling, you're going to be disappointed.
Extended rant on FB, but the gist: Morphology has become rather popular. Every edupreneur and their dog is jumping on that bandwagon right now.
I'm not saying I know it all, but I'm willing to think about it deeply and talk it through with you. This makes my courses different.
Stalker update: Once again failed in his application for bail today. That's how nasty his crimes are. Even with remand overcrowding, no sane magistrate is going to let him back on the streets anytime soon. Win.
FREE spelling webinar this Friday!
Very sad that my trip to SPELDNSW is postponed until July 3.
Because I will now be at a loose end on Friday March 20th, here's a free 60 minute webinar on spelling tricky words.
11am Melbourne time!
Check out teacher Darlene from Florida. I don't think I've ever been more proud! Get one at the link below (I don't make anything from this, FYI).

The 'false graphemes' conundrum has origins in 3 misunderstood concepts about Eng orthography:
1. The role of final silent E
2. Why consonants double
3. Morphemic boundaries
Doing talks on this in 2023 & the Writing for Life book will contain alternatives to false graphemes.
If you're applying for a job as a literacy intervention specialist with my organisation, my best advice is to really REALLY check your cover letter and resumé before sending it off to me. Typos, grammatical errors and spelling mistakes do not instil confidence.
I ♥️the movement by so many educators to the science of learning & reading. The value of an explicit approach to literacy instruction cannot be understated.
But what does 'explicit' really mean? Can independent reading & writing activities sit alongside?

Aaand...I forgot to press record on this morning's webinar. 😕
But...I've decided to run real time Spelling for Life lessons as a series free of charge instead. 🙂Starting next week:
Today was the last day of school for my beloved Sasha. She has 4 exams to sit and then that's it.
She's weathered countless storms, including undiagnosed but quite obvious dyslexia.
Her Eng teacher gave her this as well as a B in her last English SAC.
I'm so very proud of her.

. How better to boost teachers’ self efficacy & professionalism? Oh, and student outcomes too. An all round win 🙌
Thank goodness there are academics in education who not only understand how literacy is acquired, but are also willing to stand up to academics who clearly don’t.
Tinkered with my practice setup in preparation for the launch of the Language Arts Online course on Monday. The affixes now match the morphology scope and sequence. I'm rather fond of it if I do say so myself.
@buckingham_j
Funny, isn't it, that there are never articles from schools who switched from structured to balanced literacy announcing similar improvements? There are no stories of teachers ditching SoR for WL/BL and reporting revelatory experiences and improved data. Why's that d'you think?😉
FINALLY got around to finishing my third report on The Reading League's Third Annual Conference.
This time, it's Steve Dykstra's talk, and how, from time to time, it works better to resist the urge to shout "Hey Dumbass!".

@DrLSHammond
What’s the stupidest thing you’ve heard this week?
Mine was an academic on a live talk about the science of reading declaring that DREAMING is a form of reading.
#clueless
A thought from a parent of 3 dyslexics who is advocating for change at her school:
“It’s like play equipment: by the time you’ve done the fundraising and got permission, your kids are out of there anyway.
It’s exhausting.”
Poor systems capitalise on this kind of inertia.
Excellent illustration of the misconception of sight words and what this means in terms of teacher/system knowledge and skill.
Reading Recovery apologists have recently resurrected protests to my RR blog, and I will direct them to this in reply.
