#TRLConf2019 Maryanne Wolf’s retort to anyone crying “drill and kill”: Actually what I’m doing is giving multiple exposures to the visual word form area of the visual cortex. Boom!

@lifelonglit Skill and thrill - the thrill of being able to read after you have been explicitly taught the skills to do so.

@lifelonglit @ehanford Only a few exposures are needed to embed word for instant retrieval with high level of phoneme proficiency. See McCandliss, phoneme awareness activates word form area. Its only Phonics decoding if multiple repetitions are needed.

@lifelonglit This also reminds me of the bad word that “memorization” has become. If you remember something, it has been memorized, one way or another. This is *good*.

@lifelonglit I hear "drill and kill" all the time at work! May have to write this out and frame it in my classroom.

@lifelonglit I wonder if any of those people ever go the gym? A good trainer will adjust the drills to the needs of the learner - sometimes there will be bits that are less interesting, but no-one says “repeating the same activity isn’t worthwhile” when it comes to building physical fitness.
