Dear Readers, Today we released the most important white paper we’ll publish at @8VC this year, authored by my colleagues Sebastian and Finn. There are few topics I’m more obsessed with than how we can make healthcare better and more affordable for all. (Building inexpensive

Everyone knows about serious problems in American healthcare: $1.8T in federal spending, burned-out doctors, endless phone trees, incomprehensible bills. No-one has a viable plan to fix this mess. And rather than helping, our policies have effectively banned AI from medicine. We

Twenty years ago, if one of my kids had asked me what I did for a living, I would have said I fixed people. It would have been true in the literal sense. I was in the operating room constantly, repairing what was torn, worn, or broken. That was the identity. That was the job. And

Presented at #AHA25: In patients with atrial fibrillation after successful ablation, rivaroxaban therapy did not lead to a significantly lower incidence of a composite of stroke, systemic embolism, or new covert embolic stroke than aspirin therapy. Full OCEAN trial results:

One obvious thing we **should** have done when moving to electronic publication was switch to rich citations that point directly to what you are citing in a paper - a data point, a figure, a method, a conclusion - and explain why you are citing it. Another thing publishers

Agree with @DFCapodanno: it’s time to reevaluate the role and need for central illustrations. Most don’t go through peer or design review, so it can be the paper’s weakest link.

Some people adore them—some even prefer them to the actual text—but central illustrations, to me, are becoming increasingly cryptic, full of clichés and mannerisms. They’re supposed to capture the essence of a paper, yet they often look hastily assembled just because the journal

For physicians, financial literacy often comes way after clinical + scientific literacy. It’s a defect in our training. Advice for early career: stop reading/writing clinical stuff for 3 months, get financially literate (read), make a plan. Thx for sharing, @AndrewJSauer.

In 2014, when I started my first real job as a cardiologist, I didn’t even know how deep in debt I was. After years of deferral and forbearance, the total hit me: $350,000 in student loans, car loans, credit cards, and an underwater condo. My net worth was –$350K at age 32.

I’ve been obsessed with the @NEJM CPCs since I was in grad school. Now, with @tabuckley_, it’s surreal to see @NEJM publish the first AI differential diagnosis in the 100+ year history of the series, generated by our AI system Dr. CaBot, alongside the human expert’s.
