How many genes are in the human genome? (The third in an irregular series of threads about #Bioinformatics.) Let’s start by restricting “gene” to mean “protein-coding gene.” For the moment, this number appears to be just under 20,000, far lower than it used to be 1/11

The recent paper of [Clark 2023 PNAS] finds that social status correlates across family lineage in a way that is consistent with genetic transmission. Is genetic transmission the only model that can produce this pattern? Let's take a look ... https://t.co/RM8BLJbM3K

If anyone knows of any data science / pop gen positions in industry please get in touch! NYC area or remote. @Color laid off ~50% of the company. Genomics R&D work basically out. Frustrating news, but proud of my contributions and grateful for all I learned & great colleagues.

Assumed, at first, that the other shooting would be Oxford High. But it's Sandy Hook. Just incredibly dark that there are multiple options there.

This holiday season, @SecBlinken could affirm his support for the Diversity Visa program by withdrawing his appeals of the Gomez, Rai, and Goodluck orders. That single act would pave the way for nearly 20k DV2020 & DV2021 winners, their spouses, & children to be issued visas.

Of 100 drugs entering clinical development, only 8 or so are eventually approved. A sankey diagram nicely shows that even though phase II has the highest failure rate, phase I is actually where most drugs get dropped in absolute terms (data from BIO)

I'm incredibly excited about @Color's announcement today for our launch in Behavioral Health. As with everything else @Color does, the model is designed to overcome cost and access barriers with a particular focus on public and population health. Some keys to this are:

Imagine studying for a whole year to be chosen as top 500 out of 500K students who go to #SharifUniversity and then freshman year, 9 days in, getting shot at because some extremist can’t stand hearing you disagree with them. Why are you nowhere to be found @CNN @nytimes @BBC ?

The girl eating breakfast hijabless in the plaid shirt. Her name is Donya. A close friend of her reached out to me and asked me to share this photo of her. She’s currently in Evin Ward 207. Thats where they put political prisoners. She’s in there for the crime of eating breakfast
