It is the honour of my life to be Labour's candidate for Northfield.
It is a privilege to represent
@northfieldCLP
and fight for change after 14 years of Tory failure.
I will work hard every day to deliver Labour's plan and repay the faith that has been shown in me.
Construction workers had the highest male occupation morality rate from suicide between 2011 and 2015, so if discussing feelings is 'woke' then this seems like a very good and important thing
"I'm sure the people of Birmingham would really rather have the option of going by faster train to Nottingham, Derby and other places like that, rather than go to London maybe half an hour quicker," Labour peer Lord Berkeley tells
@KayBurley
.

You start with far-fetched resolutions ... and you end up in the grotesque chaos of a Green Party - a GREEN PARTY - lining up with the Telegraph in an attempt to block investment in public transport.
Statutory Sick Pay is rising by 0.5% (50p a week) from next month while projected inflation in 2021 is 1.5% (CPI) and 2.5% (RPI).
The Treasury is cutting SSP rates in real terms at the height of a pandemic. This is an utter failure of public policy and leadership.
It was great to launch the Northfield campaign with a such strong group of activists.
Labour is out knocking on doors each day and fighting for every vote.
Soppy personal tweet. Nine months ago I sustained serious injuries. Four operations and a lot of physio later, and I was able to swim again yesterday. It was great. 🏊♂️
The North East, East Midlands, and Yorkshire & Humber already receive the lowest public investment per head in rail.
Cutting HS2's eastern leg is the opposite of levelling up and a disaster for those regions.
Great Labour teams were out in Rubery, Allens Cross, and Northfield yesterday.
Residents raised serious issues about crime, the NHS and housing.
Lots of people said they are backing Labour and can't support Rishi Sunak or the Tories - we are working hard for every vote.
I was a 'SEN student.' My life was made a misery at school by people who wrote me off (and said things like this).
I left to go to an inclusive FE college, & went on to gain two degrees from Oxford.
These attitudes must be consigned to dustbin of history where they belong.
Listening to BBC Any Answers & heard a teacher say "we have students from the very highest grades down to SEN students"!
How are the
#SEN
students in her school going to ever succeed? What can we do to turn these attitudes around?

Time to say it again: the majority of people who work in schools are not teachers. It's infuriating how the Government and the press consistently ignore support staff.
The Government has just forgone £161 billion in revenue over five years - equivalent to the total UK annual cost of education, transport and environmental protection services combined
The NHS Pay Review Body, which takes guidance from Government on pay policy and affordability, is due to make its recommendations next month. This is exactly the time for Ministers to talk about pay in the NHS.
It was great to catch up with
@richardburden27
, former MP for Northfield.
We worked together to develop some of the transport improvements that a Labour government will make happen.
It means a lot to have his support in this campaign.
The value of opposition policy work for unions:
GMB submitted equal pay amendments to the NPF -> Labour pledged to restore Single Source protections -> the Government are now u-turning and promising to do the same
Just caught up with the
@C4Dispatches
programme on HS2. Sad to say it was a paper thin hatchet job. No new information but plenty of cliches and half-truths. No Midlands' voices, and not a single mention of the word 'capacity.' Poor.
Race to be Tory leader already getting very heated. This dossier on Rishi Sunak has already been doing the rounds on Westminster Whatsapp groups. More on other candidates too but so far Sunak & Zahawi seem main targets
This is abject nonsense. RPI-driven fare rises have been written into franchises since privatisation. Staff costs amount to less than 15% of industry expenditure.
@Dominic73585228
I do mean to Nottingham station on services that would connect directly from HS2 onto the existing line. On the original route, the Birmingham-Toton journey time was going to be 19 minutes.
Two excellent teams were out in Kings Norton North and Weoley and Selly Oak wards this afternoon and evening.
@Carmel4KNN
,
@TennantJamie
and I picked up casework and there was a lot of support for Labour.
Huge thanks to
@LilianGreenwood
,
@David4BKH
and others for joining us.
The East Midlands already recieves the lowest rail investment of any region. Cutting HS2 completely would be a disaster and make a mockery of levelling up.
This is such an important announcement from
@UKLabour
and
@bphillipsonMP
.
The number of primary pupils is falling. Nursery places on school sites will help keep sites open and offer more choice to parents.
It's great news for parents and staff.
.
@SimonFosterPCC
joined me and
@Esther_Rai_
to talk to stallholders on Northfield high street today.
We'll work together to prioritise neighbourhood policing and deliver Labour's plan to support our high streets.
The bad news keeps coming. I'm entirely biased but the
@CommonsTrans
has lost a brilliant chair in
@LilianGreenwood
. The DfT will be sleeping easier tonight, which isn't good for anyone.
@njak_100
That’s very kind. I’m gutted not to be able to seek re-election but very proud of the work we did on
@CommonsTrans
in my two years in the chair.
Thrilled to be talking about
@GMB_Union
's campaign for workplace neurodiversity at the
@DYSPRAXIAFDTN
's Conference later. I'm wearing two badges today.
Next time
@George_Osborne
presents himself as a moderniser, remember that he and the
@Conservatives
knowingly forced low-paid public sector workers' children into poverty
Research *funded by the DHSC* found that infection rates are higher in care homes that only have SSP cover. HMT's modelling should be published - were these factors even taken into account?
...It's widely believed the Treasury resisted extending the scope of Statutory Sickness Pay during the pandemic because of fears it would become permanent.
The result, arguably, has been a worse epidemic as people have felt financially unable to isolate...
Rosie Duffield is a former teaching assistant, a trades unionist, someone who stood up to injustice when she saw it, and who took on the Tories in their taken-for-granted heartlands - and won. Imagine thinking we need fewer MPs like her.
Statement by
@stagecoachgroup
“We have no intention to bid for UK rail franchises on the current risk profile offered by the Department for Transport.” As things stand, that’s one of the last big UK-owned rail operators heading for the door.
Watching some MPs lionise Bercow over his empowerment of Parliament, while ignoring the serious allegations of bullying made by former members of staff, is uncomfortable, to say the least.
Transport Secretary,
@grantshapps
has announced that
@northernassist
will now be operated by the government from 1 March 2020. Passenger journeys will not be affected.
For more information 👉
Don't fall for the trick. 'Alternative' investments will take years to plan and most of the HS2 money will be gone forever.
This isn't about reinvesting - it a cover for delaying and cancelling transport spending in the Midlands and the North.
Some of the pro-worker policies committed to at Labour Conference and in the Party's Stronger Together report 👇
- Restore and strengthen the Two-Tier Code
- National procurement tied to union access & record on social value
- A National Wealth Fund to invest in new jobs (1/6)
Appledore's closure today, marking the likely end of 160 years of shipbuilding history, is a national act of industrial self-sabotage. Shame on Ministers for sending orders overseas. Solidarity with members of
@GMB_union
and other unions affected.
Brilliant, angry piece by
@chakrabortty
on poverty Statutory Sick Pay rates in the care sector: “I’m being forced to make a choice. Either I live in poverty or I kill my client.”
We've been looking into patient deaths and ambulance delays for the last few months. It is sobering and harrowing material, but glad to have had the chance to contribute to this important article.
It was a privilege to speak today at
@DYSPRAXIAFDTN
's excellent adult conference about dyspraxia at work and GMB's campaigns on neurodiversity in the workplace
Workers deemed to have not 'made a vital contribution': most NHS, social care, council workers, school support staff, civil servants, police staff, prison staff...
Our public sector workers have made a vital contribution to our country in the past few months. We can rely on them when we need to.
So we’re giving them a pay rise.
Details here:
If people think that HS2 is the only option for our railways then they don't understand the problem, because HS2 is certainly not the solution! 😡
We need better connectivity between local communities, not a high speed line to London.
#StopHS2
Labour's shipbuilding pledge is an important moment - GMB and other unions have long called for this policy to deliver higher investment in yards, jobs, and skills⚓️🧵
Labour pledges all naval ships to be UK built - In a landmark policy declaration, the Labour Party has vowed to commission the construction of all naval vessels within the United Kingdom, heralding a significant boost for domestic shipbuilding.
Every penny of the £19.8 billion committed to the Northern leg of HS2 will be reinvested in the North.
Every penny of the £9.6 billion committed to the Midlands leg will be reinvested in the Midlands.
Michael Gove's decision to scrap the School Support Staff Negotiating Body was an act of industrial relations vandalism. Delighted that Labour accepted GMB's amendment to reinstate it.
Support staff are a crucial part of every school.
Enabling the success of every child, helping them to achieve and thrive.
That’s why Labour will bring in a new negotiating body for school support staff.
'We'll bring in the School Support Staff Negotiating Body ... support staff, as well as teachers, will deliver the change our children need, and Labour will value and respect them just as much.'
Labour is the party of high and rising in education.
Because it is central to our values that aspiration and ambition are for everyone, and so too must be excellence and opportunity.
Honoured set out our plans to Labour Conference today.
The IEA's positions are not about the merits of individual policies. They are ideological: they oppose buses, trains, and other collective forms of transport on principle.
Congratulations
@JoeBiden
&
@KamalaHarris
. Amazon stands ready to help in your efforts to tackle climate change, control the spread of COVID-19, reboot our economy, & advance commonsense immigration reforms that honor America’s diversity.
It’s Day 1!
Extraordinary. The Government have confirmed that
@MattHancock
, the HEALTH Secretary will be acting as a human shield🛡for Chris Grayling and responding to the UQ granted to
@AndyMcDonaldMP
to ask about the Department for Transport’s payment of £33m to Eurotunnel.
Watching Robin Hood on the iPlayer and the culturally imperialist BBC has Nottinghamshire peasants speaking in Estuary English. No wonder the North is revolting.
.
@GMB_union
has warned that predictive algorithms could be misused as a 21st century form of blacklisting. Great to hear
@AngelaRayner
tell
#TUC23
that Labour will modernise the blacklisting regulations to prevent it.
Teaching assistants are part of the huge recruitment and retention crisis in our schools.
Those vacancies affect children’s learning across our country.
Labour will give school support staff a new national voice so they are recognised & valued again.
I'm just a boy, standing in front of the popular press, asking them to not use junk numbers and show the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings the caveated respect it deserves
Chuffed to bits that brilliant colleagues
@charlotte2153
and
@SarahOwen_
have been selected as Parliamentary candidates tonight. They'll be fantastic additions to the PLP. 💪🥳
Employers in this situation should ask themselves: why are their existing policies and culture failing?
Unions have produced model policies that cover issues from neurodiversity awareness to disclosure routes and reasonable adjustments. GMB's below 👇
Good and important to hear
@rachelreeves
say that, under Labour industrial policies would be 'developed with workers and trade unions, not imposed on them.'
#Lab21
Regional public sector pay has been periodically proposed since the infamous Geddes Commission of 1922. It has been rejected by every Government then and since, and for good reasons (medium length🧵)
