Very nice paper cautioning on uncritical application of #Mendelian_randomisation.
Review: "Use of Mendelian randomization to assess the causal status of modifiable exposures for rheumatic diseases" led by @SteZhao that was a pleasure to contribute to. Great take on where we are currently with MR particularly focused on rheumatology:

@aidanbutty #MendelianRandomization suggests role of CXCL5 in aetiology of ulcerative colitis (UC) but not Crohn's disease (CD). Collaboration with @NickPowellLab showed ⬆️ CXCL5 expression in UC gut samples > CD > healthy. But interesting paradox of MR direction of effect - see Discussion!

@aidanbutty 1) Examples include disease-protein pairs that mirror existing therapies (e.g. IL-12B and IBD -> ustekimumab). 2) Note directional discordance across IMDs: genetic predisposition to higher CD40 increases rheumatoid risk but protective against multiple sclerosis and IBD.

@aidanbutty By combining #pQTL and disease #GWAS in a #MendelianRandomisation framework we identify proteins that play a causal role in development of immune-mediated diseases (#IMDs).

Congrats to @Neely_Lab on their work showing that #LRRC15 is an alternative SARS-CoV-2 receptor.
Our new SARS-CoV-2 receptor paper is out: work done by @LLTheResearcher @M_A_Waller @CPC_usyd @SydneySOLES. - We found a new human receptor that can bind SARS-CoV-2 Spike, suppressing infection, turns on antiviral responses, and turns down collagen.
