I have cerebral palsy and have had abuse shouted at me in the street (by a group of teenage girls). I kept my head down and walked on.
Remember it is their problem, nothing to do with you. How people treat the vulnerable in society is a mark of character and they failed.

As a UK citizen who directly experienced terrorism many years ago I stand by Israel 100% regardless of what the UK government decides over arms sales.
@AvivaKlompas
I experienced terrorism 30 years ago (nothing compared to what Emily has been through) but I never spoke about it for 20 years. For me, not speaking about it was a form of self-preservation. My heart goes out to her and to her family and I hope that one day Emily will be able to

Thank you for renewing the Franco-British relationship. We will always be close friends and allies. It is an alliance that has been a force for immense good in the world and one that has changed lives for the better. Long live the Entente Cordiale! 🇫🇷🇬🇧
I was told by a male academic historian that ‘disabled people have no place in higher education’. Regardless I completed my PhD, held teaching positions at the universities of Dundee and Aberdeen. I am continuing to look for a new post and continuing to work to prove him wrong.
Scotland replies - ‘Cromwell who?’
While Ireland (quite rightly) hates Cromwell, as Laura Stewart has stated, Scotland just pretends that the military conquest of Scotland never happened. It is not talked about.
@theAliceRoberts
Being an academic with a physical disability is not easy either. Once, at an academic conference, a fellow female academic refused to call me by my title 'Dr' and kept calling me 'Miss' despite being corrected by other academics in the room.
@IainDale
The House of Lords vets govt legislation it should be a place of experience and wisdom, not cronyism. There needs to be rules on who can be elected to the House of Lords, such as 15 years of experience in the Commons, worked in different government departments and held a cabinet
@Mr_Andrew_Fox
Charles de Gaulle had to authorise it knowing that innocent people were going to die. Yet, France and Europe had to be liberated from the Nazis. Freedom and democracy has a price but it is a price worth paying. We should never take our freedoms for granted.
@RichardJMurphy
North Sea Oil is actually driving the change to green energy. The expertise in oil and gas has led to innovative developments in green energy. It is no coincidence that both Aberdeen and Shetland have created key innovations in green energy.
@Mr_Andrew_Fox
We are also dealing with a generation that was born after 9/11 and do not know about or understand events since 1979. My generation grew up with the IRA committing acts of violence, I saw the end of the Cold War and Khomeini was the scary bogeyman. (Genuinely used to frighten me

Aged 9 I was very kindly invited by her late majesty Queen Elizabeth II to walk the corgis around the Balmoral Estate. I have cerebral palsy. It was a very special afternoon and one I will never forget.

I discussed this with a former US marine years ago who quite rightly pointed out that not everyone is suited to the military and will not be fully committed to serving their country. Look at what French national service did to Yves Saint Laurent.
@guywalters
Many years ago our cat stole the neigbours cooked roast off the kitchen worktop. Upon finding him chewing it in the garden, our neighbour wrestled it off him, cut off the chewed bit, dusted it down and gave it to her husband to eat (She was a vegetarian so she didn't care). 😁

Britain has always been, and is, and will be forever a European country. We are part of the continent of Europe. It is a geographic fact, our proximity to mainland Europe means we share history, culture and language. We will always be connected to our neighbours.

I’m delighted there will be new licenses for oil and gas exploration in the North Sea. The green revolution and the oil industry are inseparable. It is no coincidence that both Aberdeen and Shetland have made major contributions to green energy by using expertise in oil and gas.
@simonmontefiore
Thank you for writing this Simon. I have recoiled in horror at the academy’s approach to the conflict. I have experienced terrorism first hand and I am devastated that young disabled children and others have been taken hostage. There is no excuse for terrorism whatsoever.
NEW BLOG - Stuart History and the Digital Age.
This is my new professional blog which will explore Stuart History 1603-1788 and Digital Humanities. Here is a brief introduction:
@AndreasKoureas_
My lecturer leading my special subject course on the American Revolution stated that a working class man in Manchester was paying far more tax to the British government than some of the most substantial landowners in the American colonies.
@HilzFuld
Please don’t lose hope. Remember Britain was alone in 1940. We had to persuade the US to enter the war which they didn’t do until the end of 1941. Yet Britain stood firm for two years. I am certain that Netanyahu has churchillian qualities.

There was no 'Glorious Revolution' as it was not a bloodless revolution - plenty of blood was spilled in England, Scotland and Ireland between 1688-1692.
10 Dec 1688 - King James VII & II flees London during the Glorious Revolution. He would throw the Great Seal of the Realm into the river Thames before being captured in Kent. (1/2)

The Goonies. One of my favourite films as a child. (I am disabled myself). It has a happy ending as the kids release the man from captivity and he becomes part of their gang of pirates. I saw it as a triumph of acceptance and inclusion.
What an amazing series! All the stories were fantastic but in particular the storyline about the treatment of those with illness and disability under the Nazis was exceptionally brave and very well done. (speaking as a disabled person myself).

You have been an excellent spokesperson for the IDF, clear, direct and articulate. You are a consummate and professional soldier. As a fellow Brit I am proud to call you one of my compatriots.

I mention this in my historical fiction novel

where Scottish Highlander Alasdair MacDonald states that if John Hamilton ever got lost in the Highlands at least people would know where to send him back to.[Dyes used in clothing were based on locality than clans].

During my PhD I went through every Kirk Session, Presbytery and Synod record from the 1650s. I found a heated argument amongst church elders over whether to help an Englishman who had invited prostitutes into his house. The prostitutes had bound, gagged him and stolen his money.
@eliistender10
Friday Night Dinner. I haven’t laughed so much in ages. It’s giving me some much needed relief in the evenings after spending the day preparing my latest manuscript for publication.
'You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go'!
Oliver Cromwell, 20 April 1653.
@AndrewGodsell
Those in the devolved nations would argue there is a democratic deficit i.e English votes outweigh the democratic wishes in the other nations. E.g Scottish voters have repeatedly rejected Tories at the ballot box for decades but we have a Tory PM. Brexit is also an example.
@RichardEvans36
I blame the ever increasing workloads at universities. People don’t have the time to write books anymore and there does not seem to be any tangible value from a career progression perspective . Contribution to knowledge counts for far less than it used to. I’m saying this from

Lord Byron. Although I suspect his account would have been suspended from time to time. All the media would be following him anyway waiting for the next juicy scandal.

I have cerebral palsy and a PhD in history. I was told that 'disabled people have no place in higher education'. I have taught at Dundee/OU and Aberdeen. I have now started my own business.
Freinds and family taught me to rise above ignorance and prove my doubters wrong.
Er no..like many on here I’ve done TV, radio, podcasts and school talks.
The conversation should be about the increasing trend in the Western world to undervalue the humanities, it’s causes with constructive suggestions on how to reverse the decline.

Write as you go along. My supervisor told me to do this and improve each draft moving forward. I can’t imagine doing research any other way. I would find the task too overwhelming otherwise.

I wonder if you can help me please? I am looking for reading recommendations or sources which examine Spanish sailors shipwrecked on Scottish shores after the failure of the Spanish Armada. Any help will be greatly appreciated - thanks!

IRA Brighton, 1984. My father left the TV on by accident and I watched the morning news. I was at primary/first school at the time. My Mum was horrified and turned the tv off. I asked her why they had done it. How do you explain The Troubles to a small child?
@GylesB1
The Queen was very kind to me. I grew up not far from Balmoral and I was invited to walk the Corgis around the estate. I have cerebral palsy. It was a very special afternoon and one I will never forget.
OMG! This is a blast from the past! I remember this as it on TV when I first started reading about the civil wars. (Yes, I’ve been reading academic books on the subject for three decades!).
That the Jacobite rebellions/risings were a Scottish phenomenon driven by tartan clad Highanders. Indeed one of the most intriguing elements of the period is Welsh and English Jacobitism. The experience of Irish Jacobitism told though the Irish language is also fascinating.
My favourite story from D-Day - Lord Lovat and his Piper Bill Millin. Every time we had the Scottish history tutorial on WWII - I couldn't help but tell my students about this remarkable moment on the Normandy beaches.
Today’s

When somebody mocks Jacobitism - show them this.
It has always been clear who the rightful heir to the throne was.
Yes, James Francis Edward Stuart was a Catholic but when he was born the Protestant succession as an absolute legal requirement did not exist.
When James Stuart, the ‘Old Pretender’, wanted to protest the accession of George I in 1714 he issued an actual family tree, showing how distant George’s claim was compared to his own.
George is lower right, no.58. James and the other 57 were disbarred for being Catholic.

Against All Odds by Phil Colins. It was played on the radio when I had terrible news that a friend had slipped into a coma after breathing difficulties due to a lifelong neurological condition. It sums up the helplessness in these situations.

I support Israel because I experienced terrorism firsthand three decades ago. Israel has a right to self defence under these circumstances. To stand with Israel is to stand against terrorism.
Thunderstorms, torrential rain, a red moon, and Mars visible from earth...if this was the 17th century all the Scottish Presbyterians and English Puritans would be terrified and excited at the same time, interpreting it as a sign of God's displeasure.

They had some help from the Scots and the Irish. The ‘tip of the spear’ is drawn largely from Scottish and Irish methods of warfare. The Scottish Highland regiments have a fearsome reputation even today.

In a documentary I watched one of the French SAS kept the helmet that Mayne had given him. He also said the French military continued the training that Mayne had taught them. This laid the foundations for the modern French Special Forces. I will always be eternally grateful.

What I never understand is why languages and names that have been around for thousands of years are considered 'a threat' to the English tongue which is still dominant all over the world.
Well that’s a shock considering I’ve spent 16 years researching Covenanters and over three decades reading scholarly works on the English Republic and Oliver Cromwell. 😳🤣

All the people interviewed are English and most likely from the South-East of England. There were no Welsh, Scots or Northern Irish people interviewed. Sums up the major problem in UK politics and why the whole UK constitution needs an overhaul.

Braveheart. When Princess Isabella and William Wallace get together...I laughed so much I was in hysterics. Unfortunately many around me in the movie theater didn't get why I found so funny.

A very kind man. I was at a historical event many years ago. Word had spread that Michael Foot was attending. After the ceremony everyone approached him wanting to meet him. As I have cerebral palsy I stood back from all the commotion. As Michael Foot left the crowd,
This is why I will always have the deepest respect for De Gaulle.

A secret war rages between Louis XIV and William of Orange, a conflict which threatens the stability and security of France and a fight that will determine the future of Europe. Only John Hamilton and his men in La Garde Ecossaise can protect the French realm. 3/
Much maligned (unfairly) due to Dumas’s historical fiction. He was an exceptionally able minister who played a key role in consolidating French power in the seventeenth century.
