The man who led the campaign against Claudine Gay cut his political teeth right here in Seattle. Now, he's writing the playbook against what he calls "the [left's] long march through institutions.”
It’s awfully confusing to hear
@dougducey
scold ~the media~ for not accurately covering the pandemic, then
@drcarachrist
saying the press will be a key part of getting the vaccine message out to the public.
Here's a new one: I just received a call from a woman in Georgia reporting a UFO sighting.
But here's the best part: She called us because she says she googled "who do you call to report a UFO" and
@kjzzphoenix
was the top result! 👽
“I’m confident they will be (responsible),”
@dougducey
says of individuals being asked to stay vigilant against
#COVID19
.
UA’s Dr. Joe Gerald told
@kjzzphoenix
TODAY, “I don’t think we can just rely on humans to do the right thing. It just is not a very effective strategy.”
Phoenix residents a week ago: It's so hot! Why do I live here??? I'm melting🥵
Phoenix residents today: All anyone talks about is how 🔥 it is here 😒 But haters gonna HATE amiright 😎 Phoenix is the only place for me ♥️ Now someone hand me a cardigan and a PSL it is CHILLY 🥶
.
@dougducey
has repeatedly said private gatherings are responsible for the current surge in cases. I would love to see the data that definitively proves that.
The gross disparity between the treatment of
@ChrisCuomo
and
@vv1lder
has me in such a dark place. I’m happy to see so many journalists speaking out against the outrageous failures of two legacy news organizations. But I am so TIRED of seeing us do so but seeing ZERO change.
Gannett reporters did solid data journalism on pay gaps for women and JOC. They've made totally reasonable requests for pay equity + diversity.
This response from Gannett accuses ITS OWN journalists, essentially, of "fake news" and absolutely fails to address the pay gap.
.
@Gannett
issued a response to
@newsguild
and their misinformation campaign re: the ‘study’ of 14 out of our 250+ newsrooms. We address the facts that were not disclosed. Gannett is on a journey. We've been transparent about our goals.

Oh cool, so in order to report the account that stole my photograph taken for
@AzCapitolTimes
, I have to consent to having my name, email address and HOME address shared with the account,
@TwitterSupport
? An account that is already harassing journalists and others? Do better.
Some news of the personal variety: I will now be covering the Arizona House of Representatives for
@AzCapitolTimes
! Don't worry, criminal justice/education folks - I'll still be watching. 👀
This is not to take a side or suggest anyone has or has not done a good enough job to mitigate the pandemic, but handing out an award for best response to an ongoing pandemic that has killed thousands of Arizonans - and will kill more - is tone-deaf.
I just had the best

There’s so much to be sad about today. This finally broke me. “The Media” are people who love freedom and who work to protect it every day. Messages like this are heartbreaking. But they are also reminders of why a free press must live on.
🥶May is currently running 6 degrees below normal, with an average temp of 49.7 🥶
That’s actually only the 9th-coldest start to May since 1945–but the coldest since 2002.
Warm Mays have become very common over the past decade. This year is a throwback May!
While we’re talking about The AZ Republic’s diversity and retention issues, I feel it’s worth noting
@AzCapitolTimes
- the only paper in the state strictly dedicated to state politics - has had similar issues over the years.
Today’s faith-in-humanity-restoring moment:

forgot to put his phone number on his ballot. Our mailwoman noticed and knocked so he could add it because “your vote matters” 😭
Things I can't get enough of on Seattle Twitter:
1) Sassy weather blog posts
2) Contests to name heavy machinery - really on board with "OK Broomer" this time fwiw

I'll never understand how newsroom managers/leaders can react so negatively to questions from their own journalists. Asking questions is the core function of our job. You hired us because we're good at it. Embrace accountability and transparency.
Today at The Washington Post town hall meeting, publisher Fred Ryan walked out, refusing to answer questions after dropping a bomb that there will be targeted layoffs. Proud of my
@PostGuild
colleagues for standing up and asking them anyway.
The job was hard enough with just four reporters at Cap Times. Now there will only be three? This is a time to invest in journalists who cover state government, not cut them. I’m so sorry, Andrew.
I'm being laid off from
@AzCapitolTimes
on May 15 because of COVID-19.

This is devastating. Cokie paved the way for women like me to cover politics. I never doubted that was possible because I grew up listening to her do it better than most. Thank you, Cokie.
BREAKING: Veteran journalist Cokie Roberts, one of NPR's longest-running and most recognizable voices, has died. She was 75.
Roberts helped shape the public broadcaster's sound and culture at a time when few women held prominent roles in journalism.
Speaking on an election law panel,
@rickhasen

: “The election itself is a major election issue.”
A smidge of joy from the road: A very kind hotel receptionist in Mount Shasta (insanely beautiful btw) saw I was little anxious and tired, so she upgraded me to this amazing room with a giant window 😭 Now I just need the clouds to move over to reveal the view...
THIS is what happens when elected officials perpetuate unfounded conspiracy theories and/or fail to clearly disavow them. You provide cover for rotten people to attack others for doing their job - a job, in this case, that literally exists to preserve our freedom.
Today I got the most antisemitic hate email and only threatening email of my career. The man included his name and I found an SPLC profile of him so I alerted RCPD in case he follows through on his threats to me and the Rapid City Journal newsroom. He may be from Michigan. 1/x
Some personal news: I just successfully pitched a story about the Supreme Coop and the therapeutic value of wholesome activities, like raising chickens 🙌

Some personal/professional news...
I cannot overstate how nice it is to know when the Washington Legislature will adjourn. April 25, done. Like a prix fixe legislative session.
(Definitely subtweeting the Arizona Legislature and the big shrug that is the end date for most of the session.)
The idea that education is not a "premier" beat in AZ, where...
- educators went on strike statewide
- they got raises to end it
- several related citizen initiatives have made the ballot AND won
- education committees are always FLOODED w/ bills + coverage,
is damn foolish.
Congrats on the move. But how much did
@mpolletta
abhor
@azcentral
to go from the premier beat at the state’s largest paper to the education beat? Answer: A LOT

Legitimate and talented journalist
@JenAFifield
continues to do her job with the utmost integrity despite a complete lack of transparency from elected officials who speak only to propagandists blatantly promoting their false claims.
Years of tweeting about Arizona politics, etc. and I get verified the day after I tweet about pronouncing my new handle Cam-boise? Look I’ll take it 🤷🏼♀️
I'd like to formally apologize to my friends in Phoenix for bragging about PNW weather. Also apologize to my Seattle friends for being like "yeah well it's 100+ degrees in Phoenix" when y'all complained about the heat last week. Mistakes were made.
