In South Dakota, the gap was 22 years.
"It's almost blasphemy for a physician to say," but "the answer to addressing these things is not hiring more doctors+nurses," a Lakota doctor said. "The answer is having more community-based preventions."

Native Americans tend to die much earlier than white Americans. Their median age at death was 14 years younger, according to an analysis of CDC data.
But what's ultimately behind this low life expectancy, agree experts, are social and economic forces.
BREAKING: The South Dakota Attorney General reported hitting a deer Saturday night but had actually hit and killed a man whose body wasn’t discovered until the next morning, according to the Department of Public Safety. Story coming ASAP. Then will update with info from relatives
Preview:
“My cousin got run over by the Attorney General,” Nick Nemec said about his relative Joe Boever.
“A deer doesn’t look like a human,” said Nick’s brother Victor.
Israeli soldiers pointed guns at NPR reporters. It detained, questioned + mocked their interviewee, a Palestinian farmer. The farmer was showing NPR his land, which the IDF won't let him access, causing him to lose income he earns from selling olives.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s son hanging out in and using an Israeli flag emoji in Lifta, a Palestinian town that no longer exists after Zionist militias attacked and forced its residents out.
Video of a Lakota woman ripping down a confederate flag from a truck being towed in Rapid City. I also saw the truck today, parked at a park full of families enjoying the nice weather.
Still no action. Protesters are chanting and yelling things. Some people with fireworks tickets who can’t get in are out of their cars and watching what’s happening. An Indigenous female protester is having a peaceful conversation/debate with a white female Trump supporter.
BREAKING:Ravnsborg released a statement at 10:07 p.m. his time w/ lots of details. Biggest things: He says both he+the sheriff missed the victim's body when they searched the area. Then the sheriff let him drive his car home. Then he returned+discovered the body. Keep reading 1/x
BREAKING: There is an outbreak of the coronavirus among inmates at the women’s minimum security prison in Pierre, SD after active cases jumped from 15 to 102 between Tuesday and Wednesday. Story coming.
Nick Tilsen, Oglala Lakota, is facing seven charges that could add up to 16 years in prison. The most serious is second-degree robbery for allegedly stealing a National Guard shield. Here is a man (possibly “dressing up” as a Native person) with a Capitol Police shield. 1/2
They are trying to slap a Native man with 17 years in prison for supposedly grabbing a police shield during the Black Hills protest. This guy is taking pictures with one.
Ravnsborg said he didn't call 911 after he found the dead body. He drove to the sheriff's house to personally tell him.
The top law enforcement official in SD left a dead man by the side of the road (he had been there since the night before) instead of calling 911.

Abortions are no longer available in South Dakota even though it's still legal.
The state's sole clinic, staffed by out-of-state doctors, decided to stop providing them. The last one was on Monday.
Gov. Noem says she will sign a bill banning trans girls from playing on girls sports teams at any public SD school (K-College).
Since 2013, one high school trans girl has played on a girls team. There was no local controversy.
There will likely be a lawsuit.
Joan Adam, the head of the South Dakota Department of Health, has retired after Noem ordered the department to cancel a community health worker contract with the Transformation Project, a group that supports transgender youth. She worked at the DOH for 20 years.
The husband destroyed bee hives placed outside his mansion’s wall by the neighboring synagogue and left a note saying if the mess wasn’t cleaned up quickly he would seek a restraining order and attorneys fees. The congregation had planned to harvest the honey for Rosh Hashanah.

Today I got the most antisemitic hate email and only threatening email of my career. The man included his name and I found an SPLC profile of him so I alerted RCPD in case he follows through on his threats to me and the Rapid City Journal newsroom. He may be from Michigan. 1/x
Glasses belonging to a man fatally struck by South Dakota's attorney general were found in the official's car by detectives investigating the September crash, The Washington Post reports
I agree this is important to mention, especially due to possible motive. It’s also important to know the victims could also be non-Jews as the town isn’t only white Jews. Latinos are the largest minority in the area.
Again, a sheriff and the top law enforcement official (whose jobs it is to investigate crimes) say they missed an injured man when they searched at night. 3/x
I should have written the last sentence differently. Palestinians have lost income from the IDF+settlers destroying+blocking access to their land, olive trees+other crops. But Ayoub Abuhejleh’s main concern is losing his connection to his land+family, not income.
My question for the sheriff is if he searched the area with a flashlight. Also was it within government ethics for the AG to have his chief of staff/spokesman drive back with him on Sunday for a non-work related incident?
8/x
The statement has the AG's Office letterhead on it but it came through his campaign email, not his work email to the media. The office's spokesman told me he has no idea about this letter. Story coming. 2/x
Governor Noem signed an executive order described as banning the SD Department of Education from applying for federal grants tied to critical race theory but if you read it actually bans SD from applying to ANY federal grant related to history or civics.
Abortion is now illegal in SD unless it’s needed to save the life of the mother. No exceptions for ppl who are raped, victims of incest, carrying a fetus that will be stillborn or die very soon, or for conditions that will leave the mother w/ a serious injury or disability.
Thread: Counting coup is when Indigenous people got close to opponents during battle, stole their horses or did other things w/o injuring them. At least two modern examples happened at the protests near Mount Rushmore yesterday. First this stolen shield with a new message:

Gov. Noem decided not to have her daily COVID-19 news conference the day she announced a replacment for a rep who died of the virus, the day she told 2 tribes she would take legal action if they don’t stop their COVID-19 checkpoints, +the day after she spoke w/ Smithfield workers
I'm excited to start a new job as the business and economic development reporter at SDPB next Wednesday, about 2.5 years after being at the Journal!
I will remain in Rapid City but with a new medium, statewide scope and beat focused on all things $$$.
The spokesman for the AG's Office, who previously answered questions about the incident, said he's no longer speaking about it b/c it would be inappropriate to do so since this happened on Ravnsborg's personal, not govt., time. The AG is now using his friend as a spokesman. 7/x

Please and thank you! I think it’s incredible that local papers haven’t done this yet. Not many people can afford or even want to have multiple subscriptions. But I think a lot will be willing to pay for a “day pass” to read certain articles.

“SD went for Trump by 61% — except on tribal lands. Counties overlapping the lands of the Standing Rock Sioux, Cheyenne River Sioux, Oglala Sioux, Rosebud Sioux and Crow Creek tribes went for Biden.”

My latest: Indigenous votes have made the difference in states like Arizona and Wisconsin. In a Tohono O'odham precinct Biden won 98% of the vote; on parts of Navajo Nation, he won 97%. A look at Indian Country's influence on the 2020 election so far:
55 ppl are introducing themselves after becoming U.S. citizens! There is a former translator from Afghanistan, a Monument Health nurse from Jamaica +a Filipina woman serving in the U.S. military. Others are frm Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, Russia, Canada, the UK, China, Venezuela+more!
We need more reporters in South Dakota. We need more reporters from SD (I’m not from here). We need to retain people with institutional knowledge and sources. We need diverse reporters in terms of age, gender and race.
South Dakota's political leadership says they are pro-life. The state lost a greater share of its nursing home residents to the coronavirus than any other state this fall.
I'm going through the videos on my own so it's going to be a while. Some things stand out from video one so far:
-Ravnsborg never said he searched the whole area that night. Prosecutors say his phone data shows this.

Noem said on TV that abortion pills are "very dangerous medical procedures."
Facts: The pills have a .4% risk of major complications
+ .00064% mortality rate. Giving birth has a mortality rate that is 14 times higher.

Noem's office again declined to set up a call-in line for today's press conference, which means non-Sioux Falls reporters can't ask live questions. It is 2021, there is clearly a way to make this technology happen.
A cop who once tased a 64-year-old speeding to see his ailing mother at a nursing home has now tased a 12-year-old Native girl. Police won’t explain why or share basic details (like the time of incident, what the 911 call said, etc). Police haven’t asked AG to review use-of-force
NEWS: Jenny Boever, Joe Boever's wife, is planning on filing a wrongful death lawsuit against Jason Ravnsborg for allegedly negligently causing his death.
Her lawyers: Gregory Eiesland of Rapid City and former legislator Scott Heidepriem.
The IDF refused to tell NPR reporters why they had detained
Ayoub Abuhejleh, a Palestinian farmer/NGO worker they were interviewing. Abuhejleh was released after 5 hrs.
Noem, who believes kids are being indoctrinated with leftist ideologies in schools, wants to create school curriculum where the "key objective needs to be explaining why the United States of America is the most special nation in the history of the world."
The South Dakota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America says a majority of its lay and clergy voting members have endorsed Medicaid expansion in the state.
SD ELCA says says it has 200 churches and more than 96K members across SD.
A reminder that South Dakota state troopers and some local police departments forcefully put catheters in people's genitals to see if they ingested drugs. A federal judge said this is unconstitutional and the plaintiffs have been awarded money.
Judge: “The plaintiffs were not smuggling drugs or weapons in their urethras+bladders, and the catheterizations would only provide evidence of drug ingestion rather than the more serious crime of drug trafficking ... Ingesting drugs is one of the least serious drug crimes."
The United States military has blocked South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg from moving up in rank due to his role in the death of a pedestrian last year. This comes after Ravnsborg celebrated his pending promotion on social media.

Native Americans in South Dakota are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, especially in hospitalizations.
SD is about 9% Native American, according to the most recent Census estimate. But Native Americans represent 12% of cases, 14% of deaths and 19% of hospitalizations.
The Rapid City school board appears to have generated backlash. There have been contentious meetings after the board fought COVID prevention efforts+engaged in "culture war" issues. The liberal candidates are currently ahead of the conservative ones, including an incumbent.
Hundreds of people from the Black Hills area and Pine Ridge Reservation are at a climate rally+march in Rapid City hosted by Greta Thunberg+Tokata Iron Eyes.
South Dakota is among the ~dozen states with “trigger laws” that will automatically make abortion illegal if Roe v. Wade is overturned. SD’s has no exception for rape or incest. The only exception is if your life is at risk.
The fact that there is no bus or train between Rapid City and Denver is a good illustration at how horrible our public+mass transportation infrastructure is in this country.
A man facing federal charges in New Mexico allegedly violated his pre-trial release conditions by leaving the state. How does his pre-trial officer know? Because he went to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally where he was arrested charged with state crimes.
U.S. military spending was $586 billion in 2015; the House approved $768 billion defense bill on overwhelming bipartisan basis ysd.
Over the 10 year window, that's a ~$2 trillion increase in federal spending -- comes amid rampant inflation concerns
Investigators said they found Boever's glasses in the front passenger seat, where Ravnsborg would have leaned over to get his insurance info. Why are we just learning of this? Why didn't someone from DPS, Noem's office or the prosecutors share this?
NOW: "His face was in your windshield, Jason. Think about that," a detective with the North Dakota Bureau of Investigation said during an interrogation on Oct. 30, more than a month into the investigation.
“A CBS News search of IRS tax-exempt charities revealed that 90 white supremacist, anti-immigration, anti-Muslim and anti-LGBTQ groups are registered as tax-exempt charities with the IRS.”
Today I learned that 6/9 of the justices attended private Catholic School. Gorsuch+Kavanaugh went to the same one.
Breyer, Alito and Kagan attended public school.
The FBI is fast ... the national center contacted the Rapid City office and an agent from there just called me. I'll be meeting with him tomorrow.

More pushback: The Perkins attached to the Grand Gateway Hotel is owned+operated by Northcott Hospitality, not the Uhre family. The Perkins is no longer allowing ppl at the hotel bar order its food since the hotel/bar's "business practices+beliefs do not match those of Perkins."
Tribal members gathered Sunday at checkpoints on the Pine Ridge+Cheyenne River reservations in solidarity w/ border workers+their leaders who say they have no plan to stop the checkpoints.
Finally got to write a story about everything that has happened since Friday. Thread TK.
The governor’s office says it will sue the Oglala and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes if they don’t take down their COVID-19 prevention checkpoints on state and federal highways.
Regardless of what happened, a man was hit and killed Saturday night and wasn’t discovered until the next morning. Did he die right away or did he suffer? Could he have been saved? Hopefully the investigation will go over these questions.
In much of the rural U.S., sexual-assault survivors must travel hours to access expert care. More and more hospitals are trying to use telehealth to bridge those gaps,

Thune was born in 1961. Let’s say he earned $6 when he was 18, in 1979. That’s equivalent to nearly $23 an hour now.
There is a serious issue with wages not increasing alongside the cost of living.
I started working by bussing tables at the Star Family Restaurant for $1/hour & slowly moved up to cook – the big leagues for a kid like me– to earn $6/hour. Businesses in small towns survive on narrow margins. Mandating a $15 minimum wage would put many of them out of business.
Today in South Dakota someone was sentenced to 4 years in prison plus 6 years of probation for selling weed. Also today, a former fire chief was sentenced to no prison and 6 years of probation for possessing child porn.
Gov. Noem is holding a press conference and might call a special legislative session to prevent trans girls from playing on girls sport teams, something that has only happened once and it caused no local controversy.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is sending National Guard troops to Texas at the request of that state's governor. A private donation is funding the deployment. It's not clear that that's legal.
