It’s taken me 6 years to figure this out. 🥹 Shucks… 😂 it took me more than an hour just to get the thoughts down! And even though it’s a wild first draft, I’ve got a good hunch that there’s a discovery awaiting in the underlying framework at play here. 🪡
@DefenderOfBasic Different love languages, I feel too. (@DrGaryChapman But that’s love’s different cultural patterns of expressing and receiving love bodied in the community at some level through direct or indirect incentives. Pre global culture, I imagine this was simple(r) within sub groups

The reason it feels nearly impossible to quit Twitter is because of the almost complete and total absence of intellectual life in the offline world. There is nowhere for a Thinking Man to "land" anymore. Even the cities are largely voids of anything resembling satisfying

I was running several large social accounts for clients when my girls were born. I made a pact with myself that they’d never see my phone out. It was hard sometimes, but worth every second, affirming that nothing is more important than being present.
Once I have my baby, the plan is to never use my phone in front of them. I’d never want them to see it as being something deserving more attention, and being a source of entertainment. iPad babies exist because of iPhone parents.

It fills me with constant gratitude that they’re little mirrors of my own cognitive scripts and behaviors. Knowing they’re watching and learning from how I approach the world has made me twice the man I ever thought I could be.

One of the most important lessons, which started at a very young age, is when I hear, “But Dad, our cousins get to do XYZ!” I always reply, “We make different choices, so our lives will look different from most people’s. And that’s okay.”

Sometimes that can look like: - Voicing out loud when I'm stuck: "Huh, I thought ABC would work. But I know I'll find a way..." - Constantly affirming that most things are reversible or rebuildable (big sister destroys pillow fort) while still acknowledging the original effort

One of the best (and sometimes hardest) things about being a father is trying to embody this every day. It's only through that conscious effort that I can encourage them to live the same way.
