I enjoy these Stephen Fry books. (Haven’t read Heroes yet, but Mythos and Troy were excellent). Just heard he had a new one out in The Odyssey 😍

Enjoy a movie adaptation for what it is. You don’t have to compare it to the book. As such, War and Peace (the mini series) is wonderful

The Decameron is under appreciated . A group of friends run off to the country to avoid the plague for a few years. Sit around and tell a bunch of stories. Fantastic

College is not meant to be an avenue for simply confirming all your priors. Branch out a little. Read something Controversial. Learn something new.

We don’t need courses on Beyoncé & Swift. Students know these artists. They are exposed to them plenty. What we do need are classes on Mozart, Beethoven, & Tchaikovsky. Music that shaped our world. Music that students may never learn about if not exposed to in college.

I will never understand teachers who don’t assign the Canon. If students are not exposed to Chaucer, Shakespeare, Homer, Dickens, Virgil, Dante, Austen, Twain, then when will they be exposed to this great literature? Are they just supposed to stumble upon it in their 30s?.

If you’re a student in the humanities, you should expect to read about 100 assigned books during your four years of college. Ask professors for a list. If they cannot provide a list or the list is rather short, you should challenge them on this.

It doesn’t matter what books you assign if the students are incapable of reading. Making sure students can read at grade level should be the primary focus of education . If a sizable number of students are falling short then stop everything and just teach them to read.

Leg day sucks. I hate it. Never liked it. Will never like. Don’t try to convince me otherwise. All you can do is show up. Load up a bar. And just squat until your legs fall off. That’s all I’m doing right now. And I hate it. And it sucks. And if you like leg day, you’re psychotic.

Life isn’t complicated. We make it complicated . Just lock in to ~5 goals. Ignore everything else. Pick whatever goals you want. But then everything else has to go. You won’t “have time” because you’re distracted but stuff you don’t even really want.
