The concluding paragraph of Roger Ebert's Great Movies essay on Lawrence of Arabia:
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos argues that ‘BARBIE’ and ‘OPPENHEIMER’ would have been just as big on Netflix. “There’s no reason to believe that the movie itself is better in any size of screen for all people. My son’s an editor, he watched ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ on his phone”

Traumatizing episode for kids that were always scared of disappointing their parents.

notice how he keeps using the word consumers instead of people
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos previously said that people want to “watch movies at home” rather than in theaters. “What is the consumer trying to tell us? That they’d like to watch movies at home, thank you. The studios and the theaters are duking it out over trying to preserve

What's happening in Hollywood is a mirror image of what's happening with the government at large. Everyone in charge of centuries old institutions see there's no guardrails and are frantically ripping the copper out of the walls like a drug addict trying to finance their heroin

I don't love Netflix but this is part of why Netflix getting WB isn't actually the worst case scenario lol
I get that people are upset Netflix has weak theatrical support, but if you look at the timeline of Trump, Ellison, the Saudis, and (lol) Rush Hour 4, it paints a pretty bleak picture of the Paramount bid as a soft power play. Critically, Paramount/Saudi bid included CNN.

Kinda crazy he couldn't even keep up the facade for more than two hours.
Netflix teases that Warner Bros’ theatrical release windows will evolve to become shorter “My pushback has been mostly in the fact of the long exclusive windows, which we don’t really think are that consumer friendly,” says Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos

One one hand: definitely not good. On the other: nothing I’ve ever read anywhere else has held more true than “Nothing ever ends, Adrian.” In conclusion: ball up top.

Netflix has tricked a lot of people into thinking they would get real theatrical releases, but this merger would also force them to reckon with people who work with WB specifically to guarantee a theatrical run…including Tom Cruise. So that should be interesting.
@jonathanmb32 Ted is very well liked in the industry if he attempts to Lock Warner Brothers films out of theaters he’ll risk a mass exodus of talent . If he’s lobbied enough, he will give on the theater angle.

With how much of a public temper tantrum Paramoujt has been throwing about not winning the bid, there’s a non-zero chance Trump weighs in on the Netflix/Warners deal within the next 48 hours

A few months ago this news would have sent me into an existential spiral; now after everything with Paramount…I’m almost relieved? Albeit still extremely concerned about the future of the industry (but this will probably take a while to get approved, if ever).
Netflix has entered exclusive talks with Warner Bros Discovery to buy its studio and streaming service. Scoop with @MichelleF_Davis and @joshua_sisco on the terminal.
