This work has led to the establishment of the @agriculture_ie and @NPWSIreland funded Ancient Woodlands Ireland project which seeks to complete a national inventory of ancient woodlands. More info here -

A case study of Leitrim and Kilkenny used 1830s OS maps & older archival information to identify 120 ancient woodlands, far more sites than previously documented. Many small fragments of ancient woodland in the Irish landscape, but most are threatened and are lacking protection.
