By interviewing ACT network members and reviewing existing materials, Gabe plans to create original written and visual content that will widen the lab and ACT's reach. Post-graduation, Gabe hopes to become a conservation ecologist and help protect aquatic habitats and ecosystems.

Under Tuck's leadership, the @SmithsonianEnv campus on Chesapeake Bay expanded to 2,654 acres and added seven LEED-Platinum green buildings. He also worked to connect science and communities, by launching our #participatoryscience program and encouraging similar initiatives.

Today we bid farewell to Anson "Tuck" Hines on his last working day as @SmithsonianEnv director. Tuck arrived as a marine biologist in 1979 and has led our center for the past 20 years. Next week, he'll return as an emeritus scientist studying his favorite subject: blue crabs.

Ocean creatures have a new way to hitch a ride! 🌊 🐚 SERC scientists and volunteers with the #OceanTravelers project are sampling beaches to learn about organisms living on ocean #plastic. In the first round, they covered 475 sites in over 50 countries.

Damage from snail grazing may make eelgrasses more vulnerable to infection. But the story may also be more complex. "Are these seagrass leaves becoming more diseased because they are being eaten?" asked study author Carmen Ritter. "Or are they tastier because they’re diseased?"
