I burnt out on the burnout discussion a while ago, but great example of how a little scale framing can sensationalize sensible data. "Check the axis before you wreck your perception." - Ice Cube
As we naturally compare specialties in the JAMA graph, it's important to also look what happens when you draw the axes out fully ⤵️ The overall burnout is the problem. #MedTwitter @jbcarmody

An honor to work on this @JournalofGME perspective with @jbcarmody. We discuss the ongoing inflation of residency application research items👇 and posit that capping this metric will refocus #MedicalStudents efforts toward more impactful experiences #meded

Such a surreal feeling to see our teams’ work over the past 2 years in beautiful illustrations! Check it out! 💜🫀 @karamlou @TurekPedHearts @JennaRomanoMD
Mortality remains high for infants born w/ critical left heart obstruction #CHD after hybrid palliation across 24 @chssdc institutions. Nonetheless, hybrid palliation may facilitate heterogeneous pathways and future #cvSurg & #Fontan operations. https://t.co/qBTYUFwYBD

🔍We need to zoom in on the 20,000+ open choles happening on Medicare patients every year (42% reportedly elective‼️). How many can/should be safely completed MIS? Can robot expedite the time it takes to get there? Technology should be embraced if it improves patient outcomes.

This paper... won't change practice of surgeons who've adopted robot platform and completed 100s-1000s of robot choles w/ safety & rare conversion to open🙉 @AnkitPatelMD ...can be ignored by surgeons happily doing lap choles w/ safety & rare conversion to open🙈@EricKnauerMD

Before we start arguing about 4 out of 1000 vs. 2 out of 1000 from retrospective analysis of administrative claims data, let's zoom out and take a W on the fact that more and more patients are experiencing the benefits of minimally invasive surgery.

Robot advocates and robot haters will both use this data to support respective narratives. But title could just as easily have been "Safety of Minimally Invasive Cholecystectomy: A Decade of Progress Over Open Technique."

⏳Over the ten years ⌛️, use of Open approach decreased by 7.4% to 17% of all chole cases in 2019. Lap up 2.4%, robot up 5%. Would same shift from open to MIS approach happened anyways in a world without the robot? @sdavis81 Interrupted Time Series analysis could help answer.

Supplemental content highlights: ‼️significantly lower rate of BDI in both robot & lap approach to chole compared to open approach (3.8%). 📉Decrease in rate of BDI over time for all approaches, yet open chole w 30% complications overall + BDI rate still 2.9% after adjustment 👀

Interesting new research in @JAMASurgery titled "Comparative Safety of Robotic-Assisted vs Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy" - authors report higher rate of serious BDI in robot vs lap chole (0.4% vs 0.2%, after adjusting for possible group differences). A look beyond the abstract...

Dear house of medicine, Happy (academic) new year. Here’s your annual paycut. This one will bring you to a total 23% decrease since that whole “pandemic” thing. Love, The US Government PS: We have shortage of healthcare workers and deep health access issues in this country.

Things that patients have gifted me at postop visits so far in my first year in practice...a handmade birdhouse, a crocheted throw blanket (+ one for my dog), a box of hostas. Love it. Please share any memorable/unique gifts from patients.

Subxiphoid hernias from prior sternotomy are common and can be deceptively challenging to treat. Preperitoneal approaches allow for broad mesh coverage that can reduce recurrence rates. Full video with narration: https://t.co/CgSw4gXtUQ
