Today is Thomas and Jude's birthday. T is turning 4, but Jude isn't. He died on May 6/16 from flu B. He was a perfectly healthy two-year-old. Today I get to spoil T when he's home from school, but I'll never get to hug Jude again. Let me tell you about him. /1

Today a child died from COVID-19.
This afternoon I drove by a protest at the hospital where my toddler died from a school flu outbreak.
I’m sick for that family. I’m angry for all of us. We’ve tried for 5 years to prevent stories like ours. What is this?
#ForJudeForEveryone
I'm devastated by the confirmed
#COVID19
death of a Toronto child under 4.
Don't make this small. Don't look for reasons it happened to them. That child is gone and that family's world has fallen apart, and COVID-19 is why. Take every step you can to prevent stories like this.
When influenza B broke out in my daughter's kindergarten class, we didn't know until nearly everyone had had it, until she got sick, until some were out for weeks and hospitalized. Later that week my toddler died.
We need to inform parents.

Her name was Julie Berman. She was an advocate who had already lost a friend to violence. Trans women, and especially trans women of colour, are disproportionately affected by violence. No one's life should be at risk for being who they are.

My child didn't survive our school flu outbreak. He's an empty chair, a picture in a frame, a box of ashes.
We can't prevent every illness. That isn't realistic. We should take reasonable measures to reduce the spread of illness where we can. Why don't we?
#ForJudeForEveryone
My child had RSV at 10 weeks & again at 22 months. Both times resulted in multiple ER visits + hospital stay. Absolutely ZERO advantage for him to have had RSV at a young age, only risks (both acute & longer term). Anyone suggesting willful illness in children has lost their way.
Ending licence renewal fees means a loss of over $1 billion in annual revenue, and we still have to renew. Where does that $1 billion come out of provincial spending?
Could we instead use that to properly compensate healthcare workers? Improve ventilation in schools?

Many people had the flu before it passed to Jude in May. What if one of those people had taken an extra step in flu prevention? Whose life might you save by taking extra care this season? We can't know our impact, but people's lives are worth our effort.
