I flagged Google claimed "open web is already in rapid decline" in a weekend legal filing to try to stop divestiture of its adtech monopolies. A Google senior exec tried to reframe it yesterday as out of context shorthand when press caught on to it. Lawyers now cleaning up. /1

There's a wild thing happening across the United States. The cost of car sprawl-oriented land use is starting to hit pocketbooks, with a vengeance. But because of how we allocate costs -- i.e., we hide and externalize them -- it doesn't "look" like it's the cost of sprawl. 🧵

Is the incoming leader of the California senate sneakily trying to kill a proposed 250 unit apartment building in Santa Barbara via a budget trailer bill? It certainly seems like it! 🧵

Nancy Harrison,Families for Safe Streets member: “It shouldn’t require luck to make it across the street safely. That’s why I’m here today with my wholehearted support for Supervisor Melgar’s Street Safety Act.” To the Board of Supervisors: vote YES on the #SFStreetSafetyAct

The public’s faith in our economic system depends on the preservation of open and competitive markets. The public’s trust in the wisdom of markets is fraying. Senator John Sherman, the namesake of our antitrust law said 1890:

The message to other companies is plain: It pays to break the law.

Recently, Engardio knocked on doors. “We are not into recalls,” one resident said. “They are a waste of time.” Another resident recognized Engardio and guessed why he was there. “In this national climate, recalls are such a waste of money and time.” https://t.co/3TtdNFzalo

We’ve been informed by the Governor’s Department of Finance that it won’t agree before our legislative session ends (on Friday) to finalize a $750M bridge loan to Bay Area transit. This loan was agreed to in our June budget. Without it, BART, Muni, et al will cut service.🧵

The Google remedy, after more thought = chickenshit. Huge amounts of effort and thinking, but judge went wimpy when it came to actually trying to remedy the problem he had well identified.

My bills to make SF safer & more vibrant are heading to the Governor! SB 395 authorizes 20 low costs liquor licenses for restaurants opening in Union Square/Yerba Buena. SB 276 gives SF new tool to stop sale of stolen goods on SF streets, which pushes out legit street vendors.

Google is going to continue its illegal search monopoly after a judge failed to offer any meaningful remedies to break up the search giant. “The court does not have discretion to preserve Google’s monopoly," @LeeHepner tells @ddayen.

Judge Mehta's Google remedy ruling of 2025 is going to age as well as Jon Leibowitz's FTC's Google monopoly case closure of 2013.

It's like a defendant robbed a series of banks and the court verdict found them guilty, then sentenced them to probation under which they may continue robbing banks but must share data on how they rob banks with competing bank robbers.

Honestly this might be worse than if they’d just won the monopolization case. The message now is “even if you illegally monopolize an industry, and get caught, there are no consequences”
Whoa: Google lost the search antitrust case a while back, but just resoundingly won the remedies phase. They can continue doing all of the stuff the court found unlawful, but with some minor new data sharing obligations limiting search default payoffs to 1-year terms.

AI chatbots are blowing up the 30-year economic relationship publishers have had with search engines. Many think this will kill the web if not addressed. Google needs to change first. It's resisting....
