A stray cat in SF gets run over by Waymo and a supervisor organizes protests and it makes national news. A baby (and family) is hit by a driver near a school 4 weeks ago (true story), not a peep.

A Google-backed shop (Chamber of Progress) has put into overdrive, or desperation, its push for a carve-out to allow its clients to break copyright law. Nice to see DCN's own Chris Pedigo take this on directly for the absurdity it represents. And he explains fair use. 1/2

Huge crowd & great energy at our Congressional campaign kickoff last night at the Swedish American Hall! Thank you to the hundreds who came out to support. This is going to be a deep grassroots campaign & we’re just getting started. Onward!

We are heartbroken to learn that another pedestrian life has been lost on our streets, this time at the intersection of Ocean and Ashton Avenues. You can read our statement at https://t.co/37Y1GsL2B7.

New: State Sen. @Scott_Wiener sat down with me to discuss why he’s running for Congress next year — even though Nancy Pelosi hasn’t announced whether she will run again. “I’m passionate about San Francisco having the best possible representation.” https://t.co/3Ca02muoVu

Big day for Yelp innovation! Added Yelp Assistant to biz pages so you can ask anything and get trustworthy answers. Yelp Host and Receptionist pick up the phone w/AI-agents who make/edit reservations, answer q's, and transfer if needed! And there's more!

We had a good 10-15 years where you could Google anything and get a correct quick answer. It will be missed.
Remember when googling a word actually gave you that neat little box with meaning, synonyms, antonyms, etymology, even phonetic transcription. Now it's been replaced by AI slop overview which is objectively worse completely useless. THIS IS ENSHITTIFICATION!

Yelp's Request a Quote does work like magic!
One of the best under-the-radar hacks on the internet! We need to line up a vendor for our house - like a chimney cleaner, painter, etc --it's usually lots of calls, coordinating, etc INSTEAD: I hop on Yelp (yes, Yelp) -- type in the service I need, and the area, and a brief

Here’s an idea… maybe instead of analyzing flimsy data and in conclusion throwing up our hands on a life or death issue, we take a quick look at those who have engineered a solution to the problem?
People had lots and lots of theories as to what's causing the uptick in pedestrian deaths: Maybe it's small increases in speeding? Maybe it's vehicle blind spots? Maybe it's an increase in homelessness? This week I look at these and other theories:

"A new, disruptive transport technology is rapidly changing cities across the rich world. It is highly energy-efficient, costs almost nothing, reduces congestion and pollution, and obviates the need for huge car parks. And it's not the self-driving electric car."

Waymo got a ton of attention when they announced 300k monthly SF trips last Fall, but @baywheels had 458k trips in September. Ebikes are the transportation innovation not getting enough attention. https://t.co/E4tXRWST4j

Some background: the Mayor voted to approve a housing project protected by state law. If the council did not approve it, they would've gotten sued, lost, and the town would have been bankrupted. People are trying to recall her anyway. Marin County NIMBYism remains undefeated!

There are a thousand things which can impair a driver: youth, age, intoxication from alcohol and illegal drugs, illness, disease, the drugs to treat them, distraction, exhaustion, rage and grief. Safe systems account for human frailty. US roads do not.

The driver of an SUV that slammed into a redwood tree and burst into flames in Marin County lost control of the vehicle while speeding, according to a CHP report obtained by the Chronicle.
