I really think everyone who’s been clutching their pearls over Compass publishing a (weakly argued, but politically irrelevant) paper by a former staffer should note that the organisation also published a comprehensive rebuttal by @martinshawx pretty much immediately.
Following the publication of our new paper, 'Soft Skills, Hard Labour: The Case for a New Soft Left/Blue Labour Politics' last week, @martinshawx asks: is now really the time to re-engage with Blue Labour? Read it below👇 https://t.co/gBYUxQUGLK

After the publication of our new pamphlet on the points of cohesion between the soft left and Blue Labour, Martin Shaw asks - is now really the time?

Glad to see a critique (internal to Compass) of Compass’s own extremely foolish flirtation with Blue Labour. Such a dead end.

Make no mistake. The election of @Andrea4GS as Union GS is a turning point for the Lab Party & politics in this country. She’s calling time on Reform, Thatcherism & those that support its bastardised form, 40 years on. A rallying cry to get behind.
My warning as the new head of Unison: never again will we prop up politicians hostile to unions https://t.co/E3oi9jrP14

I’m very pleased that @jemgilbert and I were able to have a good faith conversation about the Labour Party, and whether the CIA might feel they have no choice but to whack Andy Burnham (the answer may surprise you!).

Andrea Eagan was unfairly expelled from Labour for sharing a Facebook article. Now that she leads the country’s largest trade union, these clowns think she should plead to be let back in. If anyone should be begging, it’s them.
This is a generous acceptance announcement from Andrea. I sincerely hope she applies to rejoin the Labour Party and that she is welcomed back by our National Executive Committee.

Outsider candidate Andrea Egan has won the Unison general secretaryship with 59.82% of the vote. A massive blow to Keir Starmer, who had a cosy relationship with Egan's predecessors. A good moment to revisit @pollysmythe's profile of Egan from September:

Wow, imagine a small and unrepresentative minority with no democratic legitimacy taking over an organisation. How could such a thing ever be allowed to happen?
With a turnout of just 7% this election shows that a minority far left are able to take over a major union through disengagement. It shows a need to always be organising for moderate causes within all parts of the labour movement. We urge members to stay in UNISON.

Early look at the political and industrial consequences of Andrea Egan's win Will it be a 'house of cards moment' among Labour-affiliated unions? Will ministers be as keen to go ahead with removing the 50 per cent turnout requirement for ballots on industrial action?

Keir Starmer’s most reliable ally among trade union leaders, Christina McAnea, is being ousted as Unison general secretary after a single term after a historic result.
