"There is no AI exemption to the laws on the books". This is a strong statement from the chairs of federal enforcement agencies. Kudos to @FTC, @USEEOC, @CFPB, and @CivilRights.

What if your government gave an algorithm the power to assign you a “risk score”? What if the risk score could determine the course of your life? What if that algorithm was full of flaws and biases? Welcome to the suspicion machine https://t.co/C8YQoQLlH6 📷 @katherinelamart

My op ed about the last days of Twitter is out. It was sad to reflect on all that could have been. I write this piece not just as a commemoration but as a warning - we need better systems of tech oversight

This bizarre episode in social-media history proves that it’s well past time for meaningful tech oversight.

Let’s talk about consent. Do you feel like you ever properly consented to being surveilled online constantly, having a profile built of your interests and having that profile made available to anyone who could pay for it? EU regulators don’t think so either. /1

You wouldn’t expect law enforcement to go to a pen company and ask for everything that’s been written with a specific pen, says @mer__edith. So why has that been normalized with chat companies and your messages? Read the full interview:

Feeling so grateful today as Data Driven enters the world! By far the best part has been hearing from so many friends 🧡 and so thankful for the extreme badasses at @PrincetonUPress! If I have not yet talked your ear off about trucker surveillance, you can read more here: 1/

The case shows Meta is breaking the law by denying my objection request. We all have the right under GDPR to object to the use of our personal data for direct marketing but the company is straining to concoct legal arguments as to why this shouldn't apply to them.

With Twitter's change in ownership last week, I'm probably in the clear to talk about the most unethical thing I was asked to build while working at Twitter. 🧵

Yesterday was my last day at Twitter: the entire Human Rights team has been cut from the company. I am enormously proud of the work we did to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights, to protect those at-risk in global conflicts & crises including Ethiopia,

Twitter's machine learning ethics & transparency (META) team led by our friend @ruchowdh, has been laid off along with countless other workers. What's happening there should be a wakeup call on the consequences of leaving our technological future to the whims of billionaires.
