We’re pleased to announce the winner of the 2023 ACS Photonics Young Innovator Award: Professor Igor Aharonovich, aka
@igordownunder
. Congratulations! Find out more about his current research and this award in our recent interview:
I really don't understand PIs that don't allow their senior PhDs or Postdocs to be corresponding authors, if they actually did majority of the work and/or supervised the project on the ground. this is career development 101!
#PhD
students - don't wait till your supervisor asks you to write a paper. Summarise the figures and actively ask the supervisor how this can become a paper.

What is the most beautiful
#University
campus in the world? (beauty not defined - maybe architecture, location, design, features, history etc). fire away. if u can attach a pic thats a bonus!

OMG! i just read a paper that literally repeats one to one our experiments and results, then claims their methodology is different and produces better results (without showing evidence ofcourse), decorated with heaps DFT and published in a better journal! 😱😱😱
The Peer Review: I often revisit the papers i reviewed criticially. In most cases (~ 8/10), the authors just publish same thing in a lower IF journal, without addressing any of the comments. I wonder, why do we bother? why just not click YES/NO and move on?

Together with
@CarloBradac
we are launching – The Secrets to Scientific Publishing. DM/email for more details! The mission is to help ECRs/EMCRs around the world to boost their scientific outputs.

Very excited to share the new work on identification of
#quantum
emitters in
#hBN
! (spoiler - its carbon related!) . A collaborative effort with many groups around the world, lead by the talented PhD student Noah Mendelson
@UTS_Science
@MetaOptics
when I tell students to read one paper a day during their PhD, many giggle... but reading is so important - not only to broaden horizons and get ideas, but also be inspired by others.

"Our journal doesnt publish incremental research, unless of course, you are from Harvard in which case we will send it to the reviewer of your choice".
@professor_dave
you really misleading people with your tweet. u must provide context. its in a coservative country, with Royals, and the code is ONLY for opening ceremony. its their tradition, and its your duty to respect it.
Now that news sank in a little – super excited to be awarded the
#FT22
! All credit goes to the amazing research group at
@UTS_Science
@TMOS_ARC
that delives an awesome research into

! watch this space! more to come.... (photo bit outdated - this years

Little celebration! Our original work on
#quantum
emitters in
#hBN
reached 1000 citations 🥳🥳🥳🥳🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Massive congratulations to
@ToanTrongTran86
who came up with the idea, and spearheaded this work! so a Little 🧵about this all....
Honoured to be one of the recipients of the 2019 AAPPS - APCTP CN Yang award. Thank you my family, team, collaborators, and mentors – it wouldn’t have been possible without you! . Prof CN Yang is pioneer of particle Physics and received
@NobelPrize
in 1957.
We are looking for an optical physicist to join our editorial team. If you have some experience in photonics, nonlinear
#optics
,
#lasers
, optical materials etc. and a wider interest in the field, this could be for you. Apply by 27th September.
its really nice to review research proposals from overseas. sharp, short, clear small goals and almost always zero hype (excluding US proposals that by now should have delivered a quantum computer on the moon with zero energy consumption). learning a lot!

Fresh from the lab - the first Rabi oscillations measured in our group. We can finally say we are doing "real"

reminder to all
#ECRs
- before you commit for a postdoc, even its a dream position in a top group, check with current and past(!) group members to make sure the group dynamics is healthy, the PI genuinly cares and the lab is operational.

desk rejections from
@NatureMaterials
@NatureNano
now include statements like "reviewer only commented on technical aspects, but email wasnt enthusiastic enough". REALLY? -enthusiasm and jargon in a review is more important than the content?

My journey with shocking reviews continues to

. I quote: "What is the Jahn Teller effect that the authors are mentioning"? LOL so now we need to explain basic textbooks too?

Here is an idea on saving $$$ for the
#Australian
#Universities
. Consider cancelling the agreemements with travel providers. I'm sure most academics can book their own flight ticket and hence save fees of up to 85$ per person! (my estimate over 100$M a year collectively)
Very Excited to be promoted to a Fellow of SPIE
@SPIEtweets
- the international society for optics and photonics. Thanks to my students, colleagues and mentors who keep playing a pivotal role in our journey!

So we as
#AcademicTwitter
need to decide - do we like to be judged by IF?? Because I thought we don't but last 24 hrs my entire feed was about people celebrating the rise of IF in their favourite journal....
Our recent work on an alternative method to generate defects in

is FINALLY online
@NatureComms
! we show new method to create emitters on any surface/geometry! The history of this work is long - thread to follow soon.

As my EU trip comes to an end, the biggest surprise this time was the enormous discrepancy in funding between EU and AUS. More than order of magnitude more in the EU and continuous multi year grants from many sources. Very envious.

A pinnacle in the peer review: Got this today.. You couldnt make this one up even if you try... there is another 1 page of incorrect statements but nothing compared to the first page below.

The most annoying thing about editorial rejection is not the rejection. It is receiving the worst paper to review (wrong and outdated) the following week from the same editor.
#AcademicTwitter
#AcademicChatter
me as an author: "ffks why does it take 4 months to review a paper? how hard is it to find reviewers?"
me as a reviewer: "why am i getting all these invites 10 times a day? decline..."
me as an editor: "can u pls pls pls review this?? u just published with us!"
#AcademicTwitter
Large scale hybrid conferences simply dont work. people who present online, can't attend/talk to those present in person, and vise versa. as a result all presenters basically speak to empty rooms. so either one or the other.

Today marks a decade (yes, 10 YEARS) at
@UTSEngage
@UTS_Science
.... started with ~ 20k$ startup and a room full of 1970s power meters/amplifiers... was super lucky to find amazing colleagues, and supportive managers as well as best students and ECRs along the way....
Summer reading: our August issue is out, packed with high-entropy alloys, epsilon-near-zero media (
@Orad
@RWBoyd12
) & photonics with hexagonal boron nitride (
@igordownunder
) AND a Comment on how to land an academic position in the US!
this trend of editorial rejection and offers to submit to "our newest open access journal" really drives me nuts. if i wanted to submit to an open access i would NOT have chosen your journal!!!

wow.... almost fell of my chair receiving this: "The authors did an excellent job replying to my questions in the first round of reviews"

2020 submission: project too broad and too ambitious - no chance of success.
2022 submission: project too narrow, should be aiming higher

overall thanks to both reviewers for the nice comments!🙏🙏🙏

A focused workshop on Hexagonal Boron Nitride is coming!!! Join us next year on the coast of the beautiful Mediterranean sea to learn about this fascinating material. More details to follow.
