The Australian Government has appointed Professor Tony Haymet as Australia's tenth Chief Scientist.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending an afternoon tea at Government House, hosted in my honour by Her Excellency Ms Sam Mostyn, Governor-General of Australia. It was an event to mark the end of my four-year term as Australia's Chief Scientist.

Thank you to the learned academies for a wonderful farewell today at the Shine Dome in Canberra. The academies are great advocates for the research community. They bring wise minds together from across disciplines to elevate science and research and bring evidence to government.

I delivered my last major Canberra speech as Australia’s Chief Scientist yesterday at the National Innovation Policy Forum at the Press Club. My overall message reflected my inbuilt optimism about Australia’s future:

I was delighted to return for a fourth year as Patron of the @Innov_Aus Awards for Excellence in Sydney last week. These awards are an important part of the innovation ecosystem. Congratulations to all the finalists and winners for their outstanding efforts.

I was pleased to see Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge recognised in a new prize for the #PMPrizes. This $250,000 prize recognises the depth of Indigenous knowledge and its importance to Australia’s success and its future.

Congratulations to the recipients of the #PMPrizes. Their work has contributed to humanity’s knowledge in important and exciting ways, from understanding the cosmos, to discovering new drugs to treat cancer. A reminder of just how much incredible science we do here in Australia.

Parliament has been awash with scientists this week for #ScienceMeetsParliament. I caught up with the ABC’s @SciNate to talk about the importance of science to the nation in a live cross from Parliament House, where he was also speaking to the #SuperstarsofSTEM.

I’m looking forward to being one of the panellists on ABC’s Q+A on Monday night, which includes being alongside a physicist as accomplished as @bgreene. The subject is future tech which gives me a chance to talk about some of the amazing capabilities just around the corner.
