, democracy by definition is an activity that requires multitudes. I could not and do not do this work alone, and want to elevate the incredible advocates
@protctdemocracy
and all of those fighting for a better democracy.
There’s a growing view that unless McConnell agrees to hold a fair trial, the House should vote to impeach but not send the articles to the Senate. If the Senate won’t do its job honestly, they shouldn’t be allowed to do it dishonestly.
New documents show Trump Admin silenced CDC at start of pandemic, tried to alter expert scientific reports, and then tried to delete evidence they were doing so.
We were the most prepared nation in the world but now more than 750,000 Americans have died.
An expert on the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic wrote a piece 2 yrs ago on lessons of why that outbreak was so deadly.
His conclusion: govt officials, desperate to keep morale up during WWI, didn't tell the truth.
And because the govt lied, more people died.
The Trump strategy is clear: accuse your opponents of the corrupt acts you’re committing. Then the media treats their accusations and yours as parallel, and it’s a wash.
Result: you get away with rank corruption.
The strategy is now obvious. Media have to rise above it.
Wow. After more than 2,000 former DOJ expressed alarm about challenges to rule of law, now the Federal Judges' Association has called an emergency meeting re concerns around independent law enforcement.
Our institutions are sounding alarms.
Impeachment is the preferable route to the 25th because: (a) it forces every Member of Congress to vote on the record and (b) it can bar Trump from ever holding office again. It can be done quickly if Rs join Ds as they unanimously should.
But do either. He must be removed.
So Don McGahn is a member of the bar. He is a partner at the law firm Jones Day. Does Jones Day believe their partners should ignore subpoenas? Someone should ask their partners. Heck, someone should ask their clients.
Former
@WhiteHouse
counsel expected to be instructed by
@POTUS
to defy subpoena and skip tomorrow's scheduled Congressional testimony, reports
@nytimes
.
It’s telling that the very last line of the Mueller Report ends with “no person in this country is so high that he is above the law.” And then cites to U.S. v. Nixon. Then it ends. Methinks Mueller ending with that was not happenstance.
This is completely abnormal behavior in presidential politics: Trump has said the election will be "rigged," spread conspiracies about mail-in ballots, encouraged supporters to vote twice, refused to say he'll accept the results, and contradicted US intel on foreign meddling.
Democracy has been receding around the world for more than a decade. The people of Hong Kong are leading it back. The world must stand with them. This can be a turning point.
Note to
@FBI
: whatever instructions White House staff gave you, the President’s tweet below is actually (no, really I’m not kidding) an order from the President. DOJ’s legal view is that a presidential order need not take any special form; if the president orders it, it counts.
Let’s call this what it is: Trump is planning a military dictatorship. This is radical stuff that would end America as we know it. It must lead every newscast until every voter fully understands what this is. Yet it’s not even the top story in the Post.
Occasionally an official would ask us in the Obama White House Counsel’s Office if they could make their staff sign NDAs. We’d tell them no and explain that beyond classified material and federal ethics standards on confidential info, WH staff work for the public.
This is actually an important sign that our democracy is still ok. People didn’t boo Ceaușescu until the very end. Most successful autocrats instill enough fear that no one boos. Trump is weak. People boo. In all seriousness, that’s something to be thankful for.
Everything happening now in Syria— human rights atrocities, ISIS escaping, Russia strengthened, US allies betrayed, US forces in danger, is all the direct result of Trump making a single corrupt announcement to pad his own pockets. All of it. He is a threat to our natl security.
On May 30, Bill Barr, without presenting evidence or charges, blamed "far left" groups for violence after a Minneapolis police bldg was set ablaze.
Today, DOJ is charging *right-wing* saboteurs with attacking that building.
But Barr's damage was done.
Jared Kushner called 1m infections, 60k dead, a shuttered economy, 25m+ unemployed, and 3-6% drop in GDP for now with much larger likely to come "a great success story."
If our leaders refuse to see where we're failing, they can't help us get better.
Wait a minute!
@BenSasse
are you saying you hear *three times a week* from senior WH staff that the President is a danger to the nation?
And if so, can you tell us what you have done to address that as a member of the branch of govt responsible for addressing such crises?
.
@BenSasse
on the NYT op-ed: “I’m still processing it. It’s just so similar to what so many of us hear from senior people around the White House, you know, three times a week. So it’s really troubling, and yet in a way, not surprising.”
If Justices are merely “umpires” as CJ Roberts claimed, than Trump should lose these cases 9-0, just as Clinton lost his claim to presidential immunity.
Any other result would expose something rotten at the Supreme Court. And in a way, it’s good to know that now.
Psychologists will need to study this era of America if we survive it. The ability of the human brain to defy human senses to this degree will need some new label. It’s like Trumposis or something: the phenomenon of the brain perceiving facts in the world as their opposite.
If the Secretary of the Navy and SEAL Commander can risk giving up their jobs to protect the rule of law, so can Republicans in Congress.
Unless, of course, Republicans in Congress lack that same level of courage and service to nation.
“The secretary of the Navy and the admiral who leads the SEALs have threatened to resign or be fired if plans to expel a commando from the elite unit in a war crimes case are halted by President Trump, administration officials said Saturday.”
A man who helped lead a plot to overthrow the results of an American election is poised to become Speaker of the House and second in line to the presidency.
This should lead every news outlet’s coverage. Not the odds, but the stakes.
When I was a WH lawyer we trained all staff they couldn’t use their WH titles or resources (like Twitter acct) for personal uses like making restaurant reservations or promoting businesses. So yes, this tweet violates federal ethics rules. I’m sure Don McGahn will remind her.
Last night I was told by the owner of Red Hen in Lexington, VA to leave because I work for
@POTUS
and I politely left. Her actions say far more about her than about me. I always do my best to treat people, including those I disagree with, respectfully and will continue to do so
Every politician, every "pundit", every analyst, every person who considers themselves a "serious person" or "important thinker" who isn't publicly calling for the immediate removal of the President from office is not doing their jobs.
Ask yourself: are you one of those people?
There are lots of reasons Trump won’t get re-elected, from his racism to his authoritarianism to his incompetence. But it feels more and more like the driving reason is that Americans are just tired of him. His show is old and in reruns and folks just want to change the channel.
The former top intelligence official at DHS has reported to Congress as part of a whistleblower complaint that he was pressured by the Admin to exaggerate the role of far left agitators in violent acts.
Americans were actually given the clearest choice tonight by this format:
Biden: Competent, sane, knowledgeable, boring, human, empathetic potential president.
Trump: Confused, lying, crazy-uncle supporting conspiracists, tax-cheating, suspicious $400m in debtor, Covid failure.
This is a sitting Republican member of Congress urging the President to ignore a Supreme Court order.
I'm looking for his colleagues denouncing this.
The warning signs that the GOP wants to abandon our system of govt for one that simply gives them power are blinking red.
Absolutely. It’s the lawyers advising him.
@realDonaldTrump
should ignore them. Completely. Print the census with the question - and issue a statement explaining why - “because we should.” Done.
There it is! All the election deniers running for Sec State in swing states to oversee 2024 election have lost.
As have similar gubernatorial candidates in MI/PA/WI.
If Hobbs holds on, that would mean a total sweep against Trumpists in key 2024 roles. Was unthinkable on Monday.
This is such an important point. The national media is spending 1000x more bandwidth asking whether Democratic Senators will support the filibuster than they are asking whether Republican Senators will support democracy.
that walk back to the mic 🔥 watch this ⬇️
#gapol
"Folks keep asking what we are going to do about the filibuster. I think they ought to ask my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, what are they going to do about voting rights? Why won't they stand up for voting rights?"
Just another reminder that the Founders rejected having a supermajority requirement for legislation.
And the country became a superpower and model for democracy around the world by using simple majority vote for legislation.
Not just inappropriate, a violation of the Hatch Act, if true.
Back when I was the Hatch Act lawyer in the White House (apparently they no longer employ one), this would mean campaign would have to pay appropriate costs for the trip. Reporters should ask if Trump Campaign will.
If
@realDonaldTrump
was innocent, he’d be thrilled there was an FBI informant in his campaign. After all, they’d know firsthand that he’d done nothing wrong and could tell the FBI that!
The DC Circuit’s delay is unconscionable. To the Judges: all Americans for whom you work are required to meet deadlines in our jobs all the time. Voters are entitled to know whether Trump is guilty or not before the election. Honor that deadline and quit the delay. Get it done.
JUST IN: Judge CHUTKAN has formally called off the March 4 Trump trial, with a new schedule to be set after the immunity issue is resolved (if it the charges are not dismissed as a result).
Of all the ugliness in politics, the utter disrespect the Trumps show toward the rule of law, the presidency and its place of work, and everything this nation has fought SO hard to achieve might top them all. Donald Trump is terrible person and frankly his actions are horrible.
Of all the ugliness in politics, the utter disrespect George Conway shows toward his wife, her career, place of work, and everything she has fought SO hard to achieve, might top them all.
@KellyannePolls
is great person and frankly his actions are horrible.
Congratulations to Brazil’s new President Bolsonaro. It’s great to have another U.S.-friendly leader in South America, who will join the fight against dictatorships in Venezuela and Cuba, and who clearly understands the danger of China’s expanding influence in the region.
Michael Cohen’s lawyer is on
@maddow
right now saying Cohen has knowledge he’s willing to share with Mueller about Russia conspiracy to interfere in election and Trump knowledge about hacking during campaign. Today seems more and more like just the tip of the iceberg.
If Trump called Raffensberger in GA and the Wayne County Board members in MI to “pressure” (bribe? extort?) them to change results, potentially committing crimes in both cases, who did he call in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Nevada? And what happened on those calls?
Wow. Former Rudy aide: "I worked w Rudy..daily..for ~5 years. We were prosecutors together. I have absolutely no doubt that prosecutor Giuliani would have indicted someone who committed the acts in Mueller report in a heartbeat. am 100% confident of that.”
One important take away from the text messages to Mark Meadows: all of these people believed the mob attacking the Capitol was being controlled by Trump. They were there at his behest, and he could call them off. That's what they all believed in real time.
Honestly if Trump is willing to call what public health officials around the world say is a very serious public health situation a “hoax,” then there’s nothing he won’t do.
Republicans in Congress, I’m gonna just keep asking: you still ok with this? Still don’t see the danger?
After Mulvaney calls
#coronavirus
the "hoax of the day," Trump now says it's the Democrats' "new hoax."
Many people will hear his words and decide not to be tested or seek medical treatment. This is dangerous.
Today:
Trump attacks 33-year public servant in effort at witness intimidation.
His political rasputin is convicted of witness tampering and Trump blasts that verdict.
Trump pardons war criminals and alleged war criminals.
Republicans: Do you really want to bless all this?
The Founding Fathers never intended Senators to wimp out and abandon their oaths when a tyrant used the presidency to try to overthrow the Republic, but you thought that was okay, so?
The Founding Fathers never intended for Washington D.C. to be a state.
#DCStatehood
is really about packing the Senate with Democrats in order to pass a left-wing agenda.
Just look at the DC voter registration data:
🔵 76.4% Democrat
🔴 5.7% Republican
As a colleague of mine has observed:
If Republicans control the House and Senate in 2024, there’s no way a Democrat, if he/she wins the presidential election, will be certified and allowed to take office.
On Obama’s first trip to Saudi Arabia, staffers found suitcases of jewels waiting for them in their rooms. As the WH ethics lawyer, I got frantic calls from staff asking what to do w them to be sure not to violate gift rules.
The Trumps are just crooks.
“It's unexplainable that the President of the United States is actively shedding virus, millions of particles, would walk into that building, with the enormous number of staff, unmasked, shedding virus in the air in that building,” said
@JReinerMD
I used to be the White House lawyer responsible for the Hatch Act. If any taxpayer funds were used to pay for this event, given what Trump said, that would be illegal. Press should demand to know if campaigns will reimburse taxpayers for this event.
Trump, at this "official" event, invites up Republican candidates, then says, "Please get out and vote for them. And I'm going to be very nice: I'm not even going to mention their opponents. I won't tell you that they're aligned with Nancy Pelosi."
The loudest sentence in today’s opinion is the one that’s not there. The Court had a chance to absolve Trump of having engaged in insurrection against the United States and declined to do that, which is a stunning statement by our nation’s highest court. /1
To those asking how unusual Judge Sullivan’s orders are in the Flynn case, you know what’s “unusual”?
An AG overriding career prosecutors to protect the president by trying to dismiss the conviction of the President’s close aide who had already pled guilty. Object to that.
@chrislhayes
I was a White House lawyer. Staff brought issues to me all the time. I can’t recall a single instance when they came to me about a subject about which they had zero concerns. Morrison clearly worried something might be amiss.
We must be clear about three things:
1. Trump IS trying to overthrow our democracy and illegally hold power after losing.
2. He is almost certainly going to fail.
3. It is INSANELY reckless and irresponsible for elected Republicans to let this dangerous effort go another day.
Reminder: the last time US Attorneys were fired for failing to bring politically-motivated prosecutions the scandal consumed the country for months and the Attorney General was forced to resign. And this instance is far worse.
There are a lot of people indulging in the fantasy that Trump and his most die hard followers won't accept him being thrown off the ballot pursuant to the Constitution, but somehow things'll be fine if he's defeated at the ballot box. It's like they memory-holed 2020 and Jan 6.
President Trump has sold himself as a self-made billionaire but our investigation found that he received more than $400 million from his father’s empire, much of it through dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud.
No matter what else we learn, it never ceases to amaze (and frighten) me that such an obviously profoundly damaged person holds the most powerful office in the world.
“‘Trump’s caddy came up to me and said, “You know that shot you hit on the par 5?”’ Tirico says. ‘“It was about 10 feet from the hole. Trump threw it in the bunker. I watched him do it.”’”
The mainstream right in Germany thought Hitler was a buffoon. But they saw he could rally people. So they figured they could invite him into their coalition to co-opt his popularity, use it to maintain power for themselves, and then sideline him.
It is stunning that no elected Republican has called on the President to resign today.
In case they’re not sure how to do it, I’ll start: Trump should resign.
There. Not so hard. Let’s show them how easy it is to do. RT and say it with me: Trump should resign.
“All my friends are cowardly, immoral traitors to the Constitution. So I decided to give them a pass and just join them.”
-
@DanCrenshawTX
, ladies and gentleman, tells you who he really is.
CRENSHAW: Jordan has become part of the solution. Not part of the problem
TAPPER: I mean, he defied a congressional subpoena and tried to get Pence to overturn the electoral votes
CRENSHAW: But a lot of them did that. If I held that grudge, I wouldn't have friends in the GOP
As the former Hatch Act lawyer in the White House, gonna say this again: when he converts an official speech into a campaign speech, which sounds like he did here, campaign has to reimburse taxpayers per fed regulations for costs.
@ddale8
have you asked WH if they're doing that?
Trump, in this official speech to vets, is now talking about his campaign slogans, and how he might have to change Make America Great Again. He says "this is not a campaign speech" -- there is laughter -- "so I will not say Keep America Great. But we're gonna keep America Great."
Impt legal clarification: Don McGahn is a private citizen. Soon Mueller will be too. Trump has no power to stop private citizens from testifying. He can stop a govt employee by threatening to fire them. But gagging a private citizen is prior restraint barred by the 1st Amendment.
We’re witnessing the President of the United States systematically dismantle all checks on his power:
-Stonewalling Congress
-Immunity claims from civil & criminal process
-Firing of IGs
-Retaliation vs whistleblowers
-Seizing emergency powers
Trump is building an autocracy.
Trump has fired the State Department inspector general in his latest effort targeting key watchdogs across the government. According to this letter he sent to Pelosi, Trump says he “no longer” has the “fullest confidence” in the State inspector general. Effective in 30 days.
Voters: watch how Dem candidates respond to this temporary and small crisis. It will tell us a lot about their leadership.
Question those who place their own interests first. Whereas, those who place the well being of our democracy first are fit to be president in this moment.
McConnell was asked, "Should a Supreme Court justice die next year, what will your position be on filling that spot?"
The leader took a long sip of his drink before announcing with a smile, "Oh, we'd fill it," triggering loud laughter from the audience.
When I was in WH Counsel we briefed everyone on these laws.
The notion that any President would repeatedly ignore legal warnings is mind boggling.
It’s not a small thing-it’s the chief law enforcement officer declaring himself completely above the law.
Here’s the tell:
“Senior DHS officials said they expect the unrest to escalate at least through the November election.”
Expect?
This is not/has never been about so-called law & order. It’s always been about interfering w the election.
Make no mistake: rather than exporting democracy, the US exported this. Donald Trump inspired this. If we want to fix the model we have set, we now have to model accountability. Every day that goes by without DOJ indicting Trump, we risk more of this.
I just don’t get it. Surely NYT journalists can determine by asking state/medical officials if testing problems remain. And if they do, then isn’t the proper headline “Trump falsely suggests testing is no longer an issue”?
This isn’t he said/she said. These are reportable facts.
Sure, there are risks to prosecuting a former president.
But there are bigger risks to treating presidents as above the law.
And there are even graver risks to treating a president as above the law when they engage in a criminal conspiracy to hold on to power illegitimately.
I was just informed that Ronald Stroman, the deputy postmaster general, resigned yesterday. The new PMG will get his pick of a deputy, but sources indicate that Stroman was forced out.
I was a White House lawyer and I can tell you there’s a point at which you stop creating legal justifications and just resign. Note to current WH lawyers: think about your oath, your future careers, your country. Enough is enough.
Here you go: WH counsel's office is prepping legal justification for national emergency, including advising WH to ramp up talk of a humanitarian & security "crisis”. WH lawyers say the more the term is used, the more citations they will have in filing legal defense -CNN reporting
Am I crazy or do Biden’s biggest legislative accomplishments include a bipartisan infrastructure bill, a bipartisan China competition bill, and a bipartisan gun safety bill? What is
@DouthatNYT
talking about w “strictly partisan agenda”?! Objectively false.
If you were running for office and felt you’d been wrongfully indicted, wouldn’t you want a speedy trial so you could be acquitted and vindicated before people had to vote?
Terrible answer
@JoeBiden
. Subpoenas aren’t optional. You know better. You should correct record and commit to complying with any lawful subpoena, reserving the right to contest it in court if you believe it to be unlawful. Let Trump tarnish the rule of law; you should defend it.
Joe Biden stood by comments that he would not comply with a subpoena to testify at President Trump’s trial in the U.S. Senate. Biden argued that testifying would shift attention away from the president’s own actions.
In 1994, conservative Venezuelan President Rafael Caldera dropped charges against Hugo Chavez for attempting a coup, thinking it would make Caldera popular among Chavez supporters.
Instead, Chavez took over and ended Venezuelan democracy.
Vivek Ramaswamy says he'll pardon Donald Trump "Because that will help reunite the country,”
Vivek Ramaswamy will never be president.
(Video: ABC News)
On CNN, Ramaswamy says Trump can't be convicted because the Presidential Records Act "gives US presidents jurisdiction and authority over deciding what is and isn't a presidential record."
He says based on Clinton's sock-drawer case, "it is at the president's...sole discretion."
Just digest this: the United States Supreme Court is currently debating a bunch of technical legal questions we may need to resolve because Donald Trump did something that may qualify as engaging in insurrection against the U.S.
That alone makes him wildly unfit.
The Tories who broke with Johnson today expose US Republicans for their spinelessness.
If the GOP still can’t figure out how to put country before party when a reckless leader threatens to drive the country off a cliff, call the UK for help.
Me: Trump’s lawyer is saying Kemp conspired with Hugo Chavez to rig the voting machines so Doug Collins wouldn’t be in the Senate runoff.
Wife: I don’t understand anything you just said.
Also, this is not “illegal immigration.” Many of these families are presenting themselves to US officials at the border and requesting asylum, just as the law tells them to do. They are following the law and then we’re ripping their children from them.
Everyone knows this is true, so we should all start saying it over and over:
The President must be impeached and removed from office immediately in order to save American lives.
If you’re reading this, you know it’s true too. So ask yourself, why are you not saying it? Say it.
Vladimir Putin’s manipulation of the American Republican Party may be the most successful foreign intelligence operation in history. Is there even a close contender? What else has been as successful as this?
This is everything we feared and expected. There are legitimate votes being counted and the President is falsely and corruptly trying to claim there's something wrong with that. Don't fall for it. Every voter counts and we will
#CountEveryVote
In this day and age of polarized politics, that’s a remarkable majority. If a President were elected with 58% it would be the biggest landslide in more than three and a half decades.
There is no way to overstate how crazy and dangerous the Republican Party leadership has become. This is just nuts and we cannot let it get normalized. It’s nuts. And we need to call it that every single day they keep saying it. It’s news every day.
Kristen Welker: "Do you think it was a tragic day? Do you think that the people who stormed the Capitol should be held responsible to the full extent of the law?"
Elise Stefanik: "I have concerns about the treatment of January 6 hostages."
Netanyahu is refusing to leave the Prime Minister's residence.
And look who shows up to meet with him there, still calling him "prime minister," after he's claimed “the greatest election fraud in the history of the country.”
They're authoritarians. Call them that.
Netanyahu is doing more than sleeping and eating at the residence. On Monday he hosted prominent guests: Nikki Haley and CUFI founder John Hagee.
Haley, later tweeted a photo from the meeting inside the residence, and referred to Netanyahu as “prime minister.”
Remarkable video. Republicans have given up the charade and now just openly talk about cheating to entrench their power. Here’s Kansas GOP leader Susan Wagle explaining how she can gerrymander seats to lock in GOP control over changing voter demographics.
.
@nytimes
on the left.
@Forbes
on the right. One of these might save us from a nightmare; the other might help deliver it. Cmon NYT. Do better.
Excellent clarification by
@JoeBiden
. This is what responsible leadership looks like. He said something imprecise that mattered and fixed it because, unlike Trump and his lawless crew, Biden cares about the Constitution and the rule of law. Will Trump’s team now comply w the law?
I want to clarify something I said yesterday. In my 40 years in public life, I have always complied with a lawful order and in my eight years as VP, my office — unlike Donald Trump and Mike Pence — cooperated with legitimate congressional oversight requests.
If State Dept officials want to claim this is totally by the book notwithstanding the troubling appearance, editors should demand they put their names to that quote or refuse to run it. “Senior anonymous official” says this is all okay just doesn’t cut it.
