If you factor in reach/visibility and the resources required to make it happen, you could make a decent argument that this is the most embarrassing thing any human has ever done

Yet further evidence that the Irish economy is slowing down from today's Labour Force Survey. A minuscule increase in total employment in Q3, followed no growth in Q2 and a decline in Q4 2004. With unemployment rising by a substantial 25,000 since the start of the year, boom

… The be-all and end-all of their existence was to be in the forefront of a magnificent spectacle and to demonstrate their personal intrepidity at the expense of the real interests of their units and their army.”

There’s more: “There was no appreciation of the professional duty of an officer in cavalry regiments; they insisted on thinking of combat as a kind of glorious foxhunt …

Watching Sky News, a report on a meeting of EU Foreign Affairs Ministers. I spotted Helen McEntee on her first outing as FA Minister but also Poland’s Radosław Sikorski: the gulf between their respective CVs, in terms of qualifications, expertise, and experience, is vast.

To see the OTB and Ukraine as ‘the only two shows in town from a foreign affairs point of view’ demonstrates an alarming lack of awareness to FA challenges arising within and without the EU and the changing dynamic of US-Irish relations.

In the first day in the job, Minister McEntee failed to attend the Dáil debate on the passage of the Occupied Territories Bill. It's not good enough. It's time to pass the OTB - including goods and services. 📹 @DuncanSmithTD

I’ve been praying the Divine Office/Liturgy of the Hours, on and off, since I was 18; I’m now 50. Yesterday evening I hit on these familiar intercessionary prayers and was, for the first time, struck by how the balance of them, for me, has gently shifted over the decades.

A major issue: how far capitalism can be accomodated to our moral and political values? How exactly can we assert our values in this realm of human interactions? See John Paul II on this issue (as well).

I thank God that the Irish Bishops have no engaged in such measures. I notice more and more young Catholics kneeling to receive and I see no virtue in attempting to counter the reverence they demonstrate towards the Blessed Sacrament.

In 1914 the British aristocracy and their sons, far from leaving the job to others, flooded to the frontline. 24 members of the House of Lords were killed fighting in WW1, and of the 19 MPs who fought in the trenches, 12 were themselves the sons of peers.

Utter ahistorical nonsense. That elites (economic, social, or political) no longer join the military is a recent evolution, developing in the US during the course of the Vietnam war and more generally in the West (I understand France still be somewhat of an outlier on this.)
