Over the past year, soaring inflation has caused a massive fall in workers’ real wages. But Britain’s pay problems – and the stagnation in living standards they have contributed to – go much further...

I’m extremely proud of my colleagues who have given evidence to parliament and the RCPsych for explaining so clearly why psychiatrists cannot support the provisions of the dangerously flawed assisted dying bill.

🔥HUGE MOMENT! The Royal College of Psychiatrists doubles down on opposition to the assisted suicide Bill. WE COULD NOT SUPPORT THE BILL”. Leadbeater wants psychiatrists on her death panels, but the Royal College wants nothing to do with it. The Bill is surely now unworkable.

Thank you @mariellaf1 for speaking up for refugee women. I've met so many women who, as you say, have experienced violence and need a place of safety - who are now being treated like rubbish. This dehumanisation has to end.

Dr Geoghegan, Head of Policy and Research at the British Association of Social Workers, says social care in the UK is “in crisis”. He warns that people not getting the care they need may push them towards assisted suicide, when they wouldn’t have considered it otherwise.

Canada's euthanasia program is a warning to the world. People with disabilities are being pressured to end their lives during routine medical appointments. Not in rare cases, but weekly. Why? Because the system now classifies poverty and loneliness as "intolerable suffering."

Amazingly desperate tactics. Pro-#assistedsuicide Lords have failed to mislead the House. Now they demand to know what an expert witness's views are!

⚡DISGRACEFUL! Pro-assisted suicide Peer tries to dismiss Royal College of Psychiatrists’ evidence on the basis of the witness’s supposed personal views. She rightly explains she’s speaking on behalf of her College. Bill supporters are rattled by expert opposition.

Last month, I saw Il Gigante, the statue of Neptune in Cinque Terre. A statue in or by the sea can be tricky. Neither cliffs nor coastlines survive close proximity to the sea, not in the long run, so there's something hauntingly beautiful in the ephemera of seaside statues.

If Lord Falconer's vague interpretation of "pressure" is applied, no doctor will offer any patient assisted suicide, because they'll open themselves up to prosecution. That's a relief. But does rather make the law pointless. So bin it.

😮“We’re still working on the detail” - THEY’RE MAKING IT UP AS THEY GO ALONG! Nearly a year after publishing her assisted suicide Bill, Leadbeater continues to change it regularly. How can Peers have any confidence that it's been thought through? It’s a total dog's dinner!

Baroness Scotland exposes the thin judicial safeguards of the new ‘Panel’ in the Bill. Sir James Munby is mentioned. Kim Leadbeater says “patient-centred” several times (is this a new workshopped mantra??)

Baroness Scotland: extensive criticism by James Munby of panel - you say there is a judicial safeguard. This panel is not a jducial panel? Leadbeater: it's not a judge, in Commons decided a MDT with oversight of a judge, not acting as a judge, [was more robust].

Falconer says Clause 5 requires doctors to make “sure all options are made available”. This is wholly misleading. There is absolutely no requirement to make other options available. Kim Leadbeater rejected an amendment to guarantee a meeting with a palliative care specialist.

The ground constantly shifts. "It's about relieving awful pain, horrendous suffering". Well, shouldn't we ask about that suffering, then, to see if there are more compassionate means of addressing it than.. er.. death? "No, it's about autonomy, it's none of our business!"

🙋QUESTION FOR KIM LEADBEATER: Leadbeater joins Falconer in admitting her Bill is about autonomy not suffering. So why shouldn’t it be extended to anyone who wants to die for any reason? Her logic conflicts with all suicide prevention efforts where we stop people who want to die.

It’s very nice of Lord Goddard to declare that he is Vice Chair of Dignity in Dying - the pro euthanasia lobby group behind the Leadbeater Bill, but HOW ON EARTH did he become a member of the Lords’ investigative committee?

Lord Goddard, Vice Chair of Dignity in Dying(!!): satisfied law cannot be changed? And you're on record saying safest and strongest, why confident? Falconer: cannot be changed by courts, backed up by govt Human Rights assessment. Repeated reassurance on that by senior judges.
