That’s now all three schools in the state’s public university system.
Nearly two years ago,
@idsnews
ran out of money.
Today, the IDS is running a deficit around -$450,000, without a permanent financial plan. We are waiting for an answer with time we cannot afford.
A somber update for this Student Press Freedom Day:
BREAKING: A new lawsuit against ASU alleges the university violated students’ First Amendment rights after barring them from campus, including classes, after they were arrested at Friday’s Gaza solidarity encampment.
Now that I’m fully graduated, I’m so excited to say I’ll be headed off to Phoenix in June to cover equity issues as a Pulliam Fellow for The Arizona Republic!
If you have any recs for new adventures, my DMs are open. Looking forward to a summer of reporting with
@azcentral
!
Excited to share that I'll be staying on with
@azcentral
until the end of the year to cover homelessness and housing insecurity in Phoenix. Be on the lookout for more coverage on this ever-important topic!
Thrilled to say that I’ll be a reporting intern at

Here’s my (very) belated goodbye to
@idsnews
. I learned so much at this paper and met people I’ll forever be grateful for.
I’m incredibly proud of our work this past semester and so excited for what’s to come. Here’s to the IDS now and always.
After waking up to a fire in their home, these IU students thought their worries would end after leaving the house safely.
However, a frequently seen clause in their lease and lack of renter’s insurance created even more problems.

While the IDS was not permitted to report on the listening session hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences last week, a student who attended approached us with the following letter.

Currently trying to pick a front page to feature in the IDS conference room, but the design team and
@bycomalley
certainly didn’t make it an easy decision.
Here’s just a few from this past semester
Today’s front page for
@azcentral
Some residents in Phoenix’s largest homeless encampment have already started packing up in the aftermath of a judicial ruling. It’s currently unclear as to where they will go.
The IDS has been there for the Bloomington community through a pandemic, an unprecedented election, and everything in between. Reporters have worked tirelessly to serve you.
I hope that you take the time to learn a little bit about the position we’re in right now.
I'm incredibly proud to be an IDS alum. It's been an irreplaceable resource for the IU and Bloomington community for 157 years.
Its future should not be in jeopardy.
FROM THE EDITORS: IU student media is under threat by our own university. If we don’t act now to fight against potential budget cuts, we may not recover. So, on April 25, the IDS will stage a one-day walkout.
BREAKING: University of Arizona President Robert Robbins will resign at the end of his term or as soon as a replacement is in order.
ABOR Chair Cecilia Mata said the board will move forward with expediency.

So incredibly proud of our Enterprise desk at
@idsnews
. All of our reporters and editors
@catecharron
and
@kaityradde
have worked tirelessly for this community and it has not gone unnoticed.
Gonna spend the rest of the day thinking about how one of my English teachers in high school told me “We won’t need journalists if we have the internet.”
Hundreds of students across the country have been arrested after similar demonstrations. Today, these students call for an official statement from the university condemning the violence in Gaza.
Today was effectively my last day as Editor in Chief at
@idsnews
. I’m so proud of all the work we accomplished this semester, serving our community with the information it needs to know every day. Look out for a thread on some of our best work this semester soon, but for now, ✌️
UPDATE: Nearly 70 protesters were arrested late last night after state troopers closed in on the encampment that had been up for around 16 hours.

IU has emphasized that there is no active threat to the community. Please refer to the map below if you want to know what areas to avoid until the situation is fully contained.

I’m grateful to have been a part of this work. The Republic covered the clearing of The Zone up until the last day and beyond.
People shared the most difficult parts of their lives in hopes of better understanding from their community. This isn’t possible without them.
And of course, our extensive coverage of how Phoenix shut down its largest homeless encampment, The Zone. Months of reporting by
@TheMiguelTorres
@helenrummel
@HenleMark
and me.
Here's one of Helen's last stories on that:
That’s right!
The IDS has brought back the Posted Podcast, a weekly roundup of our top stories. You can listen to the second ep here to learn more about our thoughts on the semester as we wrap up the last week of the spring semester.
Congrats to our Age Boom Academy 2023 Fellows who came out en masse last night to kick us off. For the next three weeks, we are unpacking issues germane to the US housing crisis & its intersection with our aging populations and equitable access to healthy longevity.
@Columbiamsph
THREAD: More than 500 people were moved into shelter from Phoenix’s largest homeless encampment over the last several months.
But that still doesn't account for hundreds of others who lived there, many of whom moved to other streets in the city and are still facing homelessness.
Arizona State University is launching a first-of-its-kind partnership with the makers of ChatGPT, OpenAI. The university eventually hopes to use AI to assist research and student tutoring.
Here's what's next:
Gov. Hobbs calls for a sit-down meeting with UA and ABOR leadership in another critical statement, just a month after her first.

Here's what we know about ongoing Pro-Palestinian protests on multiple campuses. We will update as stories progress.
The financial situation of the IDS — and IU student media in general — has been an ongoing story and struggle.
This semester, an IU Student Media Committee, which
@nicnapier1
and I are a part of, is aiming to find a solution.
Read about it here:
DJ Boyles said he has worked at the Indianapolis FedEx Ground facility for more than four years, but he was not working last night when a gunman shot multiple people at the facility.
“I got over 30 texts asking ‘Hey are you OK? Are you alive?’” he said.
I’m attending today’s second panel of “Reporting the border, Reportando la frontera: a U.S.-México approach to journalism of immigration.” Stay tuned for updates as we hear from experts and journalists on the topics of Journalism and Immigration! (1/x)

THREAD (1/5): Arsenal Technical High School graduate Saul Rodriguez remembers when a speaker from his freshman year claimed only some of his peers would make it back for graduation. When the class arrived on Tuesday in their gowns, it was clear she wasn’t correct.

THREAD: Before the University of Arizona announced its plans to acquire Ashford University, a troubled for-profit online school, administrators knew they'd face pushback.
But new emails uncover just how much officials knew — and the lengths they went to control the narrative.
WHAT WE KNOW:
Close to 7 hours into today’s Gaza solidarity camp at ASU, a large group of protestors are still leading chants. ASU Police are not actively enforcing trespassing laws but told me that’s subject to change. Stay tuned as this story develops:
An analysis from the Trust for Public Land found that there is less public park space in low-income neighborhoods across major Arizona cities.

THREAD (1/3) Month after month, a group of HSE high schoolers gathered to discuss reproductive rights. They talked about impending laws restricting abortion across the country.
Now, as Indiana prepares for its own anti-abortion legislation, these students say they came prepared.
THREAD: Today, Phoenix officials are clearing the final block of the city’s largest homeless encampment, known as “The Zone.” After this week, the area once home to close to 1,000 people will be empty.
“Why would you want to come here and play for him?”
Several former IU volleyball players have come forward in this story and made the decision to speak to the IDS. Please take some time to listen and read this investigation from
@EvanGerike
.
Over coach Steve Aird’s four years, 15 of 25 IU volleyball players have left the program before finishing their eligibility as the team’s record has declined.
The players allege it's due to a culture of fear Aird built.

We cannot make changes to our financial structure without support from the Media School as the IDS is currently structured.
There are upcoming discussions scheduled, but I cannot overstate the urgency of this situation.
