In 1968, Zambia completed the full decimalisation process. The new system introduced banknotes (K1, K2, K10, K20) and coins (50N, 20N, 10N, 5N, 2N, 1N). The new K1 replaced the old 10 shilling note; the K10 replaced the £5. The Kwacha was pegged at US$1.40.

@RDLaverty @TheCriticMag In the 70s soap operates ran propaganda for decimalisation, claiming that 100 pennies to the pound was more British than our currency which had roots back to ancient Rome, which was dismissed as "Italian". It was either Emmerdale or Coronation Street iirc

Around about this time 60yrs ago, I took some pennies I’d found (or stolen) to the shop around the corner from our Betterment Pde Corowa NSW home. Despite #decimalisation they gave me the lollies even though it was past the cut-off date. Legends.

@davidsoskin @BlackstarOlivia @createngland @FXMC1957 I think my favourite was the half-crown, while the florin (two-shilling coin) was the most disappointing (perhaps because it wasn’t a half-crown, which gave you sixpence more). (I believe the florin was a relic of an earlier, but failed, scheme of decimalisation).

@BernadettePro17 Shows the standard of USA education, in UK those tables are called multiplication tables, “Times” is just easier to recite than “multiplied by” in rota learning. Due to decimalisation of the 🇬🇧 currency the twelve and eleven multiplication tables where dropped before I had to

@ArsenalNews_Hub 🤣🤣🤣 I would pmsl if Arsenal win their first title since decimalisation by default. But let’s be honest , Paul Merson can’t predict what he’s having for tea, never mind the outcome of any football match, or league winners

15 February 1971. Decimalisation of British coinage was completed on what was called “Decimal Day”. Before this date, the British pound was made up of 20 shillings and a total of 240 pennies. With decimalisation, the pound was subdivided into 100 “new pence”.

This packet is post decimalisation in 1971 as it shows 5p. Earlier packets I found show 3d and 7d/3p. Later packets from the 1980s have an updated design. So if we suggest 1975 as a reasonable guess, then the inflation calculator states this packet would cost 39p today. It looks

I don't know... "A tuppence was a British pre-decimal coin worth two old pence, or 1/120 of a pound sterling. It was used in the UK and Ireland before decimalisation in 1971. The term "thruppence" referred to three pence, equivalent to 1/80 of a pound."

#Otd 1928: 1st independent Irish coinage circulated. 8 coins: woodcock, sow & litter, hen & chicks, hare, wolfhound, bull, salmon & horse! The committee that chose the winning designs (from relatively unknown Englishman Percy Metcalfe) was headed by Senator W.B. Yeats.

@SharkyTheAlien @takingiteasy62 @PostsNoContext @ayeejuju I get it. I agree. I haven't seen 2•2 since school and not aware people use it, but in a world of decimalisation and ratios, it's a dumb expression. 2•2 ⍯ 2.2
