DYK? Gopher Tortoises are a keystone species, and their burrows can support over 300 species! Even their shells are important after an animal passes... The gopher tortoise shell moth relies on the keratin within the tortoise’s shell after the tortoise dies. #WildTurtleWeek

Western pond turtles, found throughout the Pacific Northwest, often hangout near bodies of water and occasionally choose roads to sunbathe on (other aquatic turtles, snakes and lizards do this too) to regulate their body temperatures. #everyturtlecounts #wildturtleweek 📷USFWS

Our native turtle populations are in trouble y'all. A #WildTurtleWeek 🧵 Like most turtle species, eastern box turtles can take up to two decades before they reach reproductive age. 📷: eastern box turtle by Danielle Brigida 1/3

Each year, well-meaning people take tiny turtles from the wild thinking they are orphaned. Young turtles can survive on their own after hatching! Please do not disturb wild turtles. Removal of any turtle from the wild can hurt local populations. #WildTurtleWeek #EveryTurtleCounts

For over 350 species, like snakes, small mammals, & insects, seeking shelter in a gopher tortoise burrow is a cool escape from summer heat. Gopher tortoises, a star of #WildTurtleWeek, are ecosystem engineers, digging burrows that can be 40ft long. More info:

This gal is diggin’ with purpose! Florida softshell turtles build their nests between late March to July in sunny, dry places. Females will typically lay more than one clutch per year. #WildTurtleWeek Video by Carli Segelson/USFWS

Nest predators like foxes and raccoons can have a negative impact on wild turtle populations. Give turtles a boost by securing trash, reducing access to human (and pet!) foods, and keeping your yard clean. #WildTurtleWeek

Wink if you love alligator snapping turtles!😜 Glad it isn’t just us. #DYK these turtles stay submerged for 40-50 minutes at a time? Adults prefer the deeper waters of canals, rivers, & lakes – only surfacing when they need a breath. #WildTurtleWeek 📸Jason Phillips/USFWS

#EveryTurtleCounts. Does it really hurt a turtle population to take just one? Yes. Turtles don’t start breeding until later in life. The youngest that any species starts breeding is ~3 years old, & some don’t begin until they’re 50. 📷: Grigory Heaton, CC-BY-NC #WildTurtleWeek
