The Four Bars of England and Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland are deeply concerned that the government is planning to restrict the right to a jury trial in England and Wales. Being tried by a jury of one’s peers is a fundamental cornerstone of the criminal justice

Absolutely brilliant first day as the temporary christmas cover for the government’s social media. Welcomed back a super popular chap to the country. Lots of engagement. Huge numbers. A job well done. 👍

Barristers, Solicitors and other court users that know FULL WELL these proposals on jury trials are utterly ludicrous need to join forces with our farmers, get to Westminster on some combined harvester’s and tractors and blow their owns loudly until Dave Lammy wakes up!

Essential thread by the tireless and brilliant @kirkkorner. Private contractors fail to produce prisoners at court on time *EVERY SINGLE DAY*. It causes hours and hours of delays. Yet the Ministry of Justice spins the statistics to mask the problem.

Here is some of the data I've obtained Table shows all the penalties imposed for late production of defendants across London's crown courts in May and June As you can see, there were *some* But nowhere near as many as you'd expect given how often defendants are late from prison

Labour is bringing the axe down on jury trials, but people in court tell a different story of where the chronic delays come from

A few days ago, David Lammy wrote a letter to the Justice Committee answering some questions about his proposals to restrict jury trial. This is a welcome step. It’s a telling letter. But not for the reasons you might think. 🪡 🧵

For those of my @UKLabour MP colleagues that, for whatever reason, haven’t had the time to engage with this curtailing jury trials plan,PLEASE have a look at this thread. I do actually wonder if Ministers have actually bothered to read Leveson. I don’t mean a summary of it, btw.

@MoJGovUK The below has no place in a document by the MOJ. Why have you forgotten the burden and standard of proof? The presumption of innocence? What is going on? You do know some people are found Not Guilty after a trial? Right? Right?

A recent criminal judgment - written by a District Judge sitting alone - runs to 32 pages. When is it proposed Crown Court judges are going to write their reasons for a verdict? Will they also be determining these new written applications to appeal from the Magistrates? When?

Extraordinarily depressing that an email sent to members of the Inner Temple concerning a celebration of Chanukah does not disclose the location of the event, but asks members to get in touch for details if they don’t already know. Awful.

k) And although Labour MPs are being given a line about Lammy’s widely considered change from the Lammy Review in 2017 - no one has yet really asked about a 2020 article he wrote for the Telegraph. Maybe someone should. Maybe backbenchers should have a copy. It’s very good.
