The replies to this are insanely devastating. People do not understand what research has given us in modern medical treatment and now this government is going to run so many labs into the ground
I cannot stress this enough: pairing a 4% funding line with the largest cut in NCI history will devastate the future of cancer research - and patients. We would be turning our backs on decades of progress.

The Dept was well represented at the Rocky Mountain RNA Symposium today! Congratulations to student Camille Goo and postdoc @ecbrooks96 on their poster awards and students @cassieminne and @graceinsci on their honorable mentions. @wattk11 @Fantauzzo_Lab @NicholsLab

The Trump administration's efforts to slash research funding have US graduate students, postdocs and other early-career scientists fearing for their careers. Some are considering changing jobs or leaving the country. Others say them might abandon research altogether.

No research is complete or flawless, having a small piece of the picture is better than making no discovery at all.
@DrNeilStone Not so fast. If 80-90% of the articles entail non-reproducible findings, knowledge might improve.

This is not a choice that’s being offered. The 15% rate will be the end of science, not more money for us. He knows this. So why ask this way? To deliberately sow division among scientists fighting against this disaster? Why would he do that? 🤔
Academic researchers (who rely on @NIH funds). Would you rather see indirects to your university kept at the new 15% flat rate & modular R01s increased from 250K to 300K per year & pay lines move to ~20th %tile or reinstate the old indirect rates & %tile cutoffs of recent years?

1/? 🧬 New Breakthrough in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)! Our new paper in @Nature reveals how utrophin—a dystrophin “backup”—is upregulated in DMD. The key? Transcriptional adaptation (TA), triggered by mutant mRNA decay, not protein loss. 🔗

Nature - Transcriptional adaptation upregulates UTRN in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients, as supported by several lines of evidence, including the use of splice-switching antisense...

Distilling the potential impact of science based on a title is so dangerous. Some of the biggest biomedical breakthroughs came from research that, at first glance, seemed ‘pointless or unrelated. Here are a few that I'm sure might have caused an uproar in the headlines:

NIH funds research that industry will not. Do you support a 10-15% cut in pediatric cancer research because that is what this is. Did you know that investment in NIH over the the past 40 years has turned a 90% 5 year death rate for children with cancer to 90% *survival* rate?
@labonnelab It’s unnecessary money for industries that already have 80% profit margin. No reason taxpayers should fund it at all.

So excited for @BailonRaisa thesis work to be my first paper in the Nichols lab! This one has been a labor of love
This a special one for us, I found this weird mutant without a dorsal fin close to 15 years ago while a postdoc with Chuck Kimmel @uoregon Ultra talented @BailonRaisa uncovered a complete story as my first PhD student. Back burner projects can pay off. https://t.co/QgSfYZatcz

🚨Big news! Five years in the making, our Zebrahub paper is now published in #Cell 🎉. We’ve built a timecourse atlas of zebrafish embryonic development, combining #scRNAseq data and #lightsheet live imaging, and delved deep into the dynamics of key progenitors.
