Miles Kwan, a fifth-year student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), was arrested for alleged sedition by national security police on Saturday. His close friends shared a poignant memory of him with me.
At a nearby train station, several people distributed hundreds of leaflets demanding an independent inquiry into regulatory negligence, resettlement, government accountability and for the construction monitoring system to be re-examined. https://t.co/y12nuaHL3S

7) This is a common tactic for authoritarian governments: to demoralise political dissent with non-political crimes, then punish him or her with tough security crimes to frame him or her as an enemy of state.

Few thoughts on Jimmy Lai’s conviction: 1) I am not surprised by the conviction given the fact that Beijing has repeatedly labelled Jimmy Lai is a national security criminal and the local court has little room to contradict the sovereign state’s notion.
#BREAKING : Hong Kong pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai has been found guilty of all three charges in his national security trial. He faced two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces, and one count of conspiracy to publish seditious publications.

Police was paying extra care to a box of Apple outside the courthouse where dozens of people are queueing up for the verdict hearing of #AppleDaily founder #JimmyLai on Monday. Officers searched the box to verify that they are real apples. 😅 (Source: The Witness HK)

Someone asked Grok to verify the widely shared video of a brave man tackling one of the Bondi Beach shooters today, which is 100% genuine. Grok says in response that the video is old (it isn't) and shows a man climbing a palm tree in a parking lot (it doesn't).
@OwenShroyer1776 @bradlander This appears to be an old viral video of a man climbing a palm tree in a parking lot, possibly to trim it, resulting in a branch falling and damaging a parked car. Searches across sources show no verified location, date, or injuries. It may be staged; authenticity is uncertain.

Latest project with @JessiePang0125, @Han_Miami and @jamespomfret about the national security trial of Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai. Illustrations are done in the High Court, a pity isn't allowed to draw there now, I had to attend and make sketches after observation.

Five years on, Beijing is apparently still afraid of me. I sought to fly @CathayPacific from New York to Australia, transiting thru Hong Kong. Immigration authorities blocked me. Evidently my spending even a few hours in the airport was too scary for them.

Kenneth Roth, executive director of the organization, said immigration officials turned him away at the airport in what some saw as the latest sign of deteriorating freedoms in the city.

Creating fake, AI-generated images of historical figures, especially those connected with Auschwitz and the Second World War, is not harmless creativity. It falsifies the past and disrespects the memory of real people. Their photographs are often the last surviving traces of

These unusual diplomatic gray-zone events reflect a sub-national #UnitedFront strategy – shaping provincial policymaking and gaining leverage against unfavorable federal policies, ultimately influencing national decisions Thanks @scoopercooper for covering my research:)

Last night the Prime Minister spoke about the UK China relationship. He argued for closer ties, saying: “This is not a question of balancing economic and security considerations” But that’s exactly what it is. His own Minister was honest about this back in January. 👇
