A real hero from Kargil war. Seeing this video after a long long time and it still feels like his face is so familiar. Don't know what stuff folks like him are made of. Hope we are worthy of his sacrifice.
Still remember watching this interview in mesmerised silence. Capt.

No matter how old you become, you are still a kid in front of your parents. Here, my father waiting for my bus to leave before going back home!
Can only hope to emulate them as parents!
After about seven months since leaving Google to start an AI research company in India, I have to unfortunately cut-short my adventure due to various reasons - the biggest being its effect on my health. My asthma got much worse probably due to the additional stress.
Starting to build my team at Jio - only folks with deep understanding and experience in training and fine-tuning large models may apply. Looking for folks with hands-on experience and eager to continue doing the same. Experience in using LLMs or calling APIs doesn't count.
We are looking for a Student Researcher to join Google Research Bangalore to advance the state of the art in document foundation models. Candidates need to be currently enrolled in a PhD program with a strong background in ML/Vision research. Please RT/Like for reach.
DMs open
I may have positions for 1-2 PhD interns for 2023 summer in my team at Google Research India. We solve hard ML/Computer Vision problems to address Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAG). Please DM me if you are keen.
Thinking of starting Dos-ai, regular (weekly/bi-weekly) chit-chats over dosa and coffee with AI/ML researchers/students/startups in Bangalore. Will there be enough interest?
खाली दिमाग शैतान का घर!
It has been a childlike dream to do something for our country which has given us so much. As part of this project recently revealed at

, we are able to generate a holistic understanding of India’s agricultural landscape using only satellite imagery.
Strange feeling saying good bye to my first predoc at Google Research today. True to his Twitter handle
@BigAmeya
has left enormously big shoes to fill in for the predocs who joined/join after him. Continue to make us proud as you chase your dreams.
@MIT
is lucky to have you!
Google Research India invites applications to bring in top research talent as PhD Interns to India Research Lab. Please share your CV with me or follow the link to apply.
I am looking for a postdoc with strong fundamentals in ML/Vision for my team at Google Research India. Our larger interest lies in doing more with less - less compute, less supervision, etc. If you are keen, please reach out.
@KishorPolya
I only have gratitude towards Karnataka and Kannadigas for adopting me and my family. Hoping that some day I would have done enough to justify this kindness. Please ignore such social media blitz which probably is just for attention.
@AbhinayJain6

India is vast with its varying colors. Generalization of any kind is risky and can lead to wrong inferences. I come from a small town in UP. Thankfully I do not hear such difficult situations from there. Things are hard but definitely not as tragic.
Thanks for yet another attempt at clarifying CAA,
@ARanganathan72
I believe the opposition was never for CAA (or for farm laws). Those who opposed it (and hence led to ugly riots in Delhi) never read it or cared to read it.
It was just a means to say "Mudi must regin"!
Indian ML researchers, just before a conference deadline:
"Itni shakti humein dena data, humara model kabhi kharab kaam kare na!
Hum use karein jo bhi hyper parameter, model kabhi overfit ho na!!
Budding ML researchers, if you have not been following Ravi's papers and his lectures which are freely available online, you are really missing out. Ravi is among the best ML researchers, an amazing human being and a dear friend. Let's celebrate our Heros and their achievements!
Happy to share that I was inducted as a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) today. I am grateful to my nominators, collaborators, students, teachers, and, above all, my family!
@iitmadras
Gave this talk in Jan at Research Week with Google - didn't realise that while motivating youngsters to innovate in ML for challenges in India, I ended up motivating my inner-self to do the same. Super excited about the challenges ahead!
जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी!
Applications for our popular Pre-Doctoral Researcher program at Google Research India are now open. If you are budding researcher exploring research as a career, consider applying.
I am grateful to the VCs who have reached out to me in the last few days with the intent to partner with me. Just so that you know, what I was trying to do is an AI research startup - reimagining the very fundamentals of large models and changing/improving them significantly.
We’ve started working on the complex process of identifying what’s written on medical prescriptions by building an assistive model to digitise it, using AI, for medical healthcare professionals.

I have been actively looking for a different vehicle to continue to pursue my goals. Very excited to share that I am now very close to the end of my search - something that I couldn't have imagined barely a month ago. Will do everything to make this one count!
After about seven months since leaving Google to start an AI research company in India, I have to unfortunately cut-short my adventure due to various reasons - the biggest being its effect on my health. My asthma got much worse probably due to the additional stress.
While I am exploring various options, I am particularly open to Indian companies who may be interested in starting/growing a deep AI lab. If it is not abundantly clear already, the ability to innovate is the biggest differentiator today.
Cannot be a better time to do it!
How many more application layer "AI" startups died with Open AI announcements? With Google I/O just around the corner, many more will probably see the same fate soon.
AI is not the same as yesteryear SAAS play. Pricing arbitrage will also not work. Companies need to go deep!
I recently started an open effort with a bunch of extremely smart and energetic youngsters, to continue the innovative work we started in our startup and more. Will continue to do my best on this front.
So heartening to see PM

The love is so deep that both will write checks for us. As best a "shagun" as you can get 🙏
Every academic year end, son diligently takes out empty sheets of paper from his notebooks and I get them bound. Used for rough work and practice.

Indians probably build more mobile apps than any other country - does that make us the leader in mobiles? Remember 30% ta x? Why will the same not happen in future with AI models? I hope better sense prevails.
Efficient models are necessary but with core research capability!

I am super thankful to everyone who helped me in this journey one way or the other, particularly my interns and part-timers who worked tirelessly just because they believed in the team and the mission. I will forever be indebted to all of you.
Will be splitting my time between Mumbai and home (Bangalore) for the next four weeks, to teach an advance course on deep learning at the Jio Institute. Would love to meet startups/folks from Mumbai area doing exciting work in AI/ML.
As one should, I usually keep a friendly but poker face when interviewing a candidate. The candidate today was so candid and full of life that I couldn't prevent myself from cracking up. Exactly what I needed after a long day!
Google Bangalore is finally re-opening bldg that used to be my office before the pandemic. The sweetest memory I have from the office is of getting served Tea from Joseph who had speech/hearing disability. His smile added to the flavor of the drinks. Hope to see him again soon!
The job posting for Pre-Doctoral Researcher with Google Research India is now live on the careers site. Good opportunity to folks who are finishing/just finished their BTech and are exploring research as a career option
Operating just at the application layer will not take us very far. In fact, cost-effective models for Indian needs in healthcare, enterprises, etc. is a better goal to aim for!

Forced to take BP medication for the first time in life Reading was kind of high (150/100). Wish me luck to successfully replace these daily medicines with lifestyle changes - more steps, diet control, better sleep timings, etc.
Don't want to get old :(
So many techies and entrepreneurs are spending their "productive" time in creating gamblers out of Indians. And who gets trapped in such habits - poor people who find it as an "easy" way to become rich.
Yehi karna tha to padhai likhai kyoon ki thi - Kya doglapan hai, yeh?
My first serious encounter with neural networks happened with Venky over 20 years ago during my undergrad at IIT Madras. I still remember how we used to get excited looking at activation outputs at various layers and carry their printouts to our advisor Yegna!
Thinking of getting a bunch of research interns with solid fundamentals in Linear Algebra and hands-on understanding and comfort with modern deep models. The aim is to chase a few transformational directions to explore the next generation models in AI.
You don't move back to India because it has become better than the west but rather be close to family, your roots and (for a tiny fraction) play your part in making India better!
It just takes one trip back home for any NRI who - swayed by emotion & some patriotism - contemplates to move back to India. Just one trip to cancel any such thoughts.
Our eyes are usually numb to the squalor on the streets, but it’s super stark for someone who just came back.

From now on, governmental institutions can no longer use the word "free" to promote any state service or function in municipal provinces or on a national level.

Xoogling going well - two weeks report.
- Best "exercising" week in almost a year
- Lost ~2 kg in 2 weeks (exercise & simpler diet)
- Significant early steps towards the mission
- Lots of ups and downs but enjoying the ride
I don't even know where to start this farewell message for my buddy,
@rudrasohan
! If you have a vague research idea, you have no idea how to pursue it, take it to Sohan and he will take care of the rest. Sohan you have been very special.
@TUDarmstadt

My mom's simplistic view of world.
"Why are IITians doing food deliveries, opening markets, cab services, selling glass frames & make up kits"
Me: They are start ups
Mom: Thats fine. But shouldn't IITians be doing s'thing in technology & engineering ? Dont need IIT for this
Something very exciting is starting to shape up - something that will not be a rehash of existing models. When I left Google Research to start this adventurous journey, I had no clue what was in store but I feel super proud of my ragtag team of interns who are starting to deliver
