Make it stop @Nature Stop paywalling science. I’m a researcher at a scrappy start up with limited budget, and every day I encounter papers behind a pay wall that literally slows down the pace at which I can consume information in my field. If you’re a researcher bothered by

Agreed! That's why I wrote ggpubfigs, a ggplot2 extension that *only colorblind-friendly color palettes. Easily make your figures colorblind-friendly with ggpubfigs! https://t.co/frQgsl7zjP
A reminder that your search committee chair, grant proposal reviewers, and manuscript reviewers might be among the 1/12 XY or 1/200 XX who can’t see what you think is obvious in your figures because they have a color vision deficiency. Adobe tools, many papers on the topic, etc.

So if you’re a grad student or postdoc (or beyond) at a crossroads, it can sometimes feel bleak like you’re entirely at the mercy of the universe — but you have agency to choose again what you aim for. I think that’s kind of awesome. You don’t decide once what you wanna be when

New CV type about to drop 👀
Big news for applicants and reviewers! CIHR, @NSERC_CRSNG, and @SSHRC_CRSH will be transitioning away from the CCV to a new narrative-style CV for funding opportunities. https://t.co/aFM5fzTIPF

Big shout out to those researchers who made their data available in PDB over the years The Chemistry Nobel Prize winners today relied on that open academic data to train their models We wouldn't have these advances if researchers hadn't made 200,000 protein structures available

Such a great idea. As a first-gen student, I don’t think I dared even speak to any of my profs until maybe 3rd year, let alone seek out their time. I just figured they were way too important to care about little old me. Sad to think how many first-gens have done the same
The semester starts tomorrow. Yes, encourage students to come to office hours, but also remember to give them examples of why students have gone:

Computer scientists fear that despite the incredible progress in AI and other fields there’ll never be a computer strong enough to smoothly run a Word document with lots of track changes

Not only is this really cool science, but this is an absolute masterclass in describing a new paper in thread format. Check it out!
We thought there wasn't much new to learn about the cell cycle. Turns out we were wrong! Our paper (out today @Nature) identifies a novel alternative cell cycle that regulates differentiation, not cell division. https://t.co/ayDhJtKK6U. 1/10

I am still shocked by this and can't get over the ideological gall of it all. So I haven't said much but permit me a couple of comments. The major mechanism that federal taxes are returned to the provinces in terms of research funding is what we call tri-council funding. /1
Every year, the federal government sends hundreds of millions of dollars in grants to Alberta post-secondary institutes. Albertans have a right to know exactly what these grants are and what they are funding. If passed, the Provincial Priorities Act will enable us to collect
