A word of warning. I’ve had Long Covid for 12mths and counting. In this time, I’ve been diagnosed with neurological sleep apnoea, encephalitis, sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus dysautomnia and POTs, and myopericarditis. I was never hospitalised. My case is mild.
I am an NHS doctor.
I’ve studied for 10 yrs. I am 100k in debt. I carry the crash bleep.
I earn £14/hr.
My auntie is a cleaner. No study. No debt. No crash bleep.
Last week she said to me “Kelly, even I earn £15/hr”

My 2 week mild covid infection has nearly killed me, resulted in organ damage and is still ongoing at 23 months. Don’t believe the government lies.

No previous conditions. Fit and healthy 35 yr old. Now housebound for 12 mths and illness ongoing. It is a myth that only those with pre co-morbidity will have poor outcomes. Doesn’t fit the political narrative that the pandemic is over.
I contracted Covid whilst working as a UK front line doctor. Staff were fed a false narrative that covid was transmitted by droplet transfer. Science shows Covid is unequivocally airborne. My NHS colleagues urgently need to be provided with full airborne PPE, including FFP3 masks
I am a doctor who contracted covid caring for covid patients at work. Failure to provide RPE left me and my colleagues knowingly exposed to deadly airborne pathogen. Previously fit and well, no co-morbidities, I am a shell of my former self. 🧵

1/3 In the first six weeks of Long Covid, I experienced neurological sleep apnoea. At night, I would stop breathing. My body would wake me from sleep, or the edge of sleep, to remind me to breathe.

A few days later I tested +ve. I was naive. As a fit 34 yr old I expected to recover. I experienced a flu-like illness for 2 wks. Barring a lingering fever in wk 3, I thought I had recovered.
I returned to work in day 4. Lasted 2hrs on ward round.
A switched flipped in my body. Light headed and breathless, I just about made it home.
My condition from that point rapidly deteriorated. I became breathless as rest. I had a resting HR 130bpm increasing to 180bpm on standing. Physically, it was like being on a treadmill I

I stopped breathing at night. I would gasp for air. My body had forgotten how to breathe. Sleep apnoea.
My brain was under attack. It didn’t switch off. I experienced severe insomnia. 4 days and 3 nights without sleep.

It is often reported that patients with
#LongCovid
experience fatigue.
The word fatigue is misleading.
Those with Long Covid are not just fatigued, their TISSUES ARE OXYGEN STARVED. Impaired blood flow and oxygenation of tissues results in impaired energy metabolism.
Diagnoses so far include, encephalitis, central sleep apnoea, myopericarditis, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, dysautomnia, POTs, PEM/PESE. 14 mths into this illness, I am still housebound. 2/10

First let’s discuss
#LongCovid
.
Long Covid is a chronic, multi organ, physical condition, currently absent of treatment or cure.
Latest figures show 2M ppl in the UK are affected. 376K have now been unwell for >2 yrs. While some slowly improve, recovery is not guaranteed.
8/ Since contracting Covid, I have been significantly unwell with
#LongCovid
.
Encephalitis, bilateral hearing loss, bilateral tinnitus, myopericarditis, abnormal clotting, vasculitis, POTS and PEM.
2/3 At the time, I suspected brainstem involvement and recognised I was severely unwell even if no one else did. We now know Covid has a predilection for the brain stem, a region where ACE2 receptors are plentiful.
Today my article was published. I share my story to raise awareness of long covid and associated neurological sequelae, and the daily struggles we all face.

#LongCovid
in around one or two, do you not think round three will be the same.
Every time you get reinfected you play Russian roulette.
There is no great medical mystery.
Breaking news: Long Covid IS Covid.
Autoimmunity and microclots are likely downstream processes from viral persistence.
About time we started trialling antivirals don’t you think?

Holy sh*t. It has been only hours since my 1st dose of Paxlovid, but it's doing something. Strong weird metallic grapefruit taste in mouth, but tightness in my chest is GONE and I can take a full deep breath. Heart rate, which had remained up at 86 after my walk, dropped to 64.
This message is important to everyone, but is especially pertinent to those who erroneously believe
#LongCovid
is ‘just tiredness after infection’ and it won’t happen to them because they’ve had it and ‘it was just a cold’
All of the following have been found in Long Covid. All are interlinked. All will be contributing to symptoms.
🦠 Viral persistence
🩸 Widespread blood inflammation and abnormal clotting
💥 Immune system dysfunction
It is likely the former is driving the latter.
I urge you to exercise caution. Go about your business, but do all you can to avoid infection.
#COVIDisAirborne
which means it is carried in the air we breathe.

6/ Failure of my employer to provide Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) left me and my colleagues knowingly exposed to a level-3 airborne biohazard.
‘Learning to live with COVID’ would involve some actual learning.
Masks are a short term solution; the installation of air filtration systems are a long-term investment. We must now treat air quality by the same standards by which we treat water quality.
2/ All autopsies were performed & samples collected within 24 hours of death.
“SARS CoV-2 can replicate within tissue for over 3 months after infection in some individuals, with RNA failing to clear from multiple compartments for up to 230 days.”
5/ “The brain is an immune protected site that would allow replication and evolution of the virus.”
They are now looking for direct evidence of replication competent in the brain.

It is not my intention to scaremonger. Despite our collective wish to return to normality
#CovidIsNotOver
, and it is dangerous and irresponsible of politicians and senior officials to suggest otherwise.
Covid is a biosafety level 3 hazard. Infection with
#SARSCoV2
is known to cause brain damage and increase risk of thrombotic complications even after mild disease. It’s not the flu.
Understand those with
#MyalgicEncephalomyelitis
&
#LongCovid
are not ‘fatigued’or ‘tired’.
They’re experiencing **tissue hypoxia** There is build up lactic acid in the limbs combing one’s hair/lifting a mug. This physiological abnormality limits what they can do.
#MedTwitter
@loscharlos
@StanfordMed
It's not fatigue, it's: "there is no oxygen in my tissues". and so when you go to use those tissues, like your heart, or your brain, those tissues start to die. that's literally long covid & ME/CFS & "fatigue" doesn't begin to cut it
The governments strategy to ‘live with COVID’ is a strategy of denial. Scrapping of protections (free lateral flow, masks, all but ending tracing, mandatory isolation) will allow for the unmitigated spread of COVID which is both dangerous and irresponsible.
7/ For 10hrs/day, for 5 consecutive days, I was surrounded by infectious patients.
As a junior, I spent all my time on the ward. I was exposed to HUGE viral loads.
Microclots have been found in the blood of every long hauler tested.
Microclots block tiny blood vessels called capillaries and cause tissue hypoxia. Because blood vessels are found throughout the entire body, any organ can be affected. Here are a few common examples…
“Once FFP3 respirators were introduced, the number of cases attributed to exposure on COVID-19 wards dropped dramatically – in fact, our model suggests that FFP3 respirators may have cut ward-based infection to zero.”
Long Covid IS Covid. Autoimmunity & abnormal coagulation are likely downstream processes of viral persistence; whether that be in the form of replicating virus, viral debris or synthetic vaccine spike
We urgently need to trial medications to clear intracellular viral reservoirs.
Brain inflammation 🧠 is not uncommon. Patients hallucinate, become intolerant of light and sound, and find it difficult to regulate their emotions. Memory, concentration and cognition can, and are commonly, affected.
Microclots don’t just block capillaries and impair blood flow to organs & tissues, they trap immunogenic material which triggers the immune system & irritates the inner lining of blood vessels.
This causes widespread inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body.
Reinfection with
#SARSCoV2
, regardless of a person's vaccination status, has been shown to increase the risk of all-cause mortality, hospitalisation, at least one sequelae, and sequelae in different organ systems compared to the first infection
Yet, the human and economic burden of Long Covid alone will dwarf the sums of money they expect to save through their strategy to ‘live with COVID’. It neither makes moral nor economic sense.
Microclots in the lungs 🫁 often cause symptoms of ongoing breathlessness.
If blood flow is compromised, limb extremities can often turn blue.🦵
Microclots in the brain 🧠 , can cause stroke like symptoms, including pins and needles in the face and transient loss of speech.
After experiencing decades of good health,
#QueenElizabeth

Secondly, we do not yet know the long, long term harms of this virus. But they are predictable.
We know viruses which persist in the body can cause increased risk of cancer and neurodegenerative disease.
20/ Moreover, a few of us can predict the long term harms of this virus: in the near future we are likely to see a wave of neurodegenerative disease, Alzheimer’s & cancer.
Pls listen to
