Why cannot more #arablefarmland look this way? If it did, we certainly wouldn't face a #farmland #biodiversity crisis. Seen near Arundel, West Sussex, England.

It is a dreadful year for #barnowls around us in East Hampshire this year. I'm yet to find a brood. This pair is like all the rest without any young this year. Last time the breeding season was so bad was in 2013, followed by the best year in the last decade in 2014.

Sometimes, we catch a glimpse of nature's merciless workings. I ringed this #barnowl as a juvenile last year, only to find it dead under a nest box 2 km away today. Even in death a barn owl radiates beauty.

Why don't more farmers create such beautiful arable #fieldmargins? They work best on light soil - which are not exactly uncommon - essentially they work anywhere if done correctly. It goes without saying that they aren't only very nice-looking, but also great for biodiversity.

The only reason sightings of #cornbunting like these are still possible in the UK, is thanks to farmers #FarmingwithNature. If this is to continue, the UK government needs to get their act together, fast. They are almost gone in some EU countries thanks to the #CAP. @DefraGovUK.

Corn bunting with nesting material, probably its 2nd brood. It’s been a good year for them so far with 20 territories identified on the breeding bird survey & fledged young spotted @BBS_birds

#Kestrel are a red-listed #farmlandbird. These three youngsters are lucky to have made it to shortly before fledging, thanks to this box I put up in an area of farmland with a high diversity of prey. This is important in a year like this where rodent numbers are very low.

According to a reliable source, the moth in question is likely to be a female Poplar Hawk-moth. Any other expert views are most welcome. Thanks.

One thing I love about wildlife conservation research is getting an insight into the fascinating behaviour of our red-listed species. Here, a #kestrel feeds a hungry mouth with a big fat moth, a more unusual prey for kestrels as far as I know. It's a miserable year for rodents.

This mix can be planted as a wildbird seedmix, a pollen & nectar mix or as flower-rich plot or strip. Talk to @OakbankGame if you need more info. It is also available from @Bright_Seeds where it is called #GWCTwildlifemix. It's perfect for farmland wildlife recovery projects.

This is an #advancedPARTRIDGEmix. I developed it together with @OakbankGame. This is how it looks now in its 6th year (right) on a chalk cap, & on heavy soil (left) with a #beetlebank running through it. It will last many more years and is even better than in my wildest dreams.

His farm didn't always look like that. Together with his father he slowly transformed it into a wildlife-friendly environment, largely driven by their passion for #turtledove #nightingale & #swifts. Here he is holding up a photo of his farm from the 90s, comparing then with now.

A key element on a wildlife-friendly farm are #insects. The more one has, both in numbers and diversity, the better. To achieve this, a wide diversity of flowers are needed, which can only be done by providing a wide diversity of flowering habitats. @GrahamDenny9 has it all.

It was a great pleasure to visit @GrahamDenny9 yesterday in my role as #SchöffelCountrysideAwards judge. While he showed me around, I saw a #turtledove, a very respectable #swift colony, superb #nightingale habitat and generally a dedication to conservation that is hard to beat.

Great to be up the ladder again this Friday and actually see some healthy #kestrel chicks. It's a very bad year for them this year, owing to the rodent cycle being rock bottom. Also, I'm yet to located a barn owl brood in my patch.

Agreed. I certainly advise farmers to have them, but also advise to keep an eye on them. In certain places, they can become dominant and take over woodland clearings, nice shrubby areas, and whole hedges. That we usually don't want to happen.

We are very lucky to have farmers like @GrahamDenny9 in the UK, who are so passionate about the wildlife on their farms. In fact, there are thousands of them going about #FarmingwithNature quietly. Other European countries envy us for this level of engagement. Let's not lose it.
