1. Struggling with identification of bees/pollinators and various other tricky insects groups? It has been my life's mission to make things easier, so check out this chain. Firstly, Steven Falk Flickr: It's a virtual museum and field adventure.

One of the highlights was photographing tiny predatory empidid flies with @RyanMitchell. Only about 2 in a 100 images came out okay but I snapped 100s. Some of the most challenging photography I've ever done.

The recent @DipteristsForum field meeting based at Glen Affric was a great success, and we covered a fair bit of north-east Scotland. I've placed some photos of locations and insects seen in a Flickr folder here:

Photographed this Macroplea on a water lily leaf at Coire Loch in Glen Affric (a boggy loch). Does not look quite right for either appendiculata or mutica. Any views @Coleopterist @bugmanjones?

Like most scathophagid 'dung flies', it has nothing to do with dung. The larvae are probably aquatic predators. You can find out more about scathophagids (and other flies) in the forthcoming @NatureBureau book.

Finally photographed the iconic Ernoneura argus 'dung fly' on the banks of Loch Garten on Saturday after several unsuccesful attempts. It occurs at just a few upland lochs, mostly in Scotland. The green lochside scum is the remains of pine pollen and the algal bloom it creates.
