The (spurious) Nutrient Sensing Argument - Some people argue that our cravings are the body telling is which nutrients it lacks - Frankly, I don't think this is a valuable strategy - Most modern people have messed up cravings/appetites anyway - Do obese people lack something

@Will_of_Europa @TheVaylo Physiology is too complex for one paradigm to solve a problem like obesity. @exfatloss makes a good car analogy--nobody expects tire repair to fix all the cars broken down on the side of the road, but that doesn't mean tire repair is "disproven" or "wrong".

@exfatloss They are talking about “seed oil” Which is a stand in for linoleic acid Which is a stand in for 4HNE. Someone should ask Colin how ‘healthy’ 4HNE is Seed oils and linoleic acid are relatively harmless until they oxidize. And they will.

Is this "uncontrolled mind" or "enemy within" thing really real? I can't even grok it. Is this another one of those "you can't imagine aphantasia" things?

@SteaknShake But "seed oils" are healthier than tallow and there's nothing unhealthy about high fructose corn syrup.

Fact. This is why I don't care about diet advice from people who've never been obese. Whatever the solution is, they wouldn't know it.

"Just do the basics" said the 10%, 25% broken person, "I did those and it helped me," never having been 50, 65% broken "Just do the things I did to fix my life," said 50%, 65% broken person, never having been 75, 90% broken So easy for the less broken to talk, seating

@SwipeWright @SteaknShake I’ve probably read most of the literature on this topic, so could you please point to the studies that have most convinced you? Most of the argument that « seed oils = good » has come from its LDLc lowering ability. Is that what your own view rests on as well?

We are told by many “scientists” that seed oils are good because they can’t admit that many scientific disciplines do not produce valuable information.

Impressive, he gets almost all of it wrong. But... 🌱🌱🌱 Carbs *aren't* essential. Carbs *are* converted to saturated fat, and drive serum SFA. Linoleic acid *isn't* essential. Take his MD away, for quackery...

Look folks, if you want to replace "seed oils" and high fructose corn syrup with beef tallow and cane sugar for taste reasons, go right ahead. But don't fool yourselves into thinking it's healthier. It's not. The health panic over "seed oils" and HFCS is not rooted in reality.

'Ketogenic' diets have become somewhat politicized. Maybe we should just call them 'Insulin-lowering' diets. If we turn down insulin enough we are in ketosis, so we get the same health effect without the politics. https://t.co/ROBmOegM0R

Yeah, that’s why it’s running all the time, even when high amounts of carbs are consumed, to stress the gymbro out. In the OP the AI physiologist curiously forgot about other gluconeogenic substrates, such as glycerol and even acetone (becoming meaningful in that context).

Scientific research today relies on one main protocol — experiments with control groups and random assignment, or RCTs. The RCT is a powerful invention for detecting population-level differences. But there are some problems with RCTs that tend to get swept under the rug.

Fascinating watching diet communities shift from body composition maxing to metabolic maxing, as if they’re different. Sure, a good physique may not tell the whole story, but neither does a poor body composition. A true diet achieves both.
