A key lesson we should all take from the increasingly hateful comments from JK Rowling is that no-one is immune to online radicalisation. No matter your thoughts on her work, she was once a widely respected author - now she spends her time writing unhinged rants about a minority.
"I’m tired of my identity being used as a political football. While the bill will have no effect on most of the population, it will make the lives of trans people like me that little bit easier."
Me in today's Sunday Times.
I think it's poetic that the Scottish Parliament will pass the Gender Recognition Reform Bill today on winter solstice. After what has felt like an eternity of dark nights, today marks the start of brighter days ahead.
This is why independence matters, this is why the independence cause is so important - my life and the lives of so many others is tangibly worse for being in this rotten union.
It's also why we have to reject any vision of independence that doesn't have equality at its core.
BREAKING: The UK Government CAN use a Section 35 order to block Scotland's gender reforms from becoming law, a court has ruled.
The Gender Recognition Reform Bill was passed by two-thirds of MSPs in the Scottish Parliament in December 2022.
As a queer woman living in Scotland, the fear I felt as I heard the first preference results was like nothing I've felt before. Even despite this more positive result, the harm Forbes and Regan have done to LGBT+ rights during this campaign cannot be forgiven.
If you campaign for a Labour candidate at the GE - even if it's "one of the good ones" - you are campaigning for someone who is happy to be counted towards a mandate to put this man in charge of England's NHS.
Between this and Gaza, at what point will you draw the line? 🥀
When I say I'm scared by this leadership election, I don't use that word lightly. The fact that only one candidate is prepared to stand up for trans people and to stand up for devolution when both are under attack from Westminster is a damning indictment on the SNP.
Anyone campaigning for a Labour victory at the General Election - including those on the Left of the party who I have a lot of respect for - will be complicit in this.
I get the sentiment of staying to change the party from the inside, but at what point will enough be enough?
The Cass Review must be a watershed moment for the NHS’s gender identity services.

Credit to Rowling, she's perfectly demonstrated how much misinformation there's been about this law. Her comments don't make her an oppressed martyr standing up for free speech, they just make her a sad bully - an act which is miserable and lonely, but not criminal.
NEW: a Police Scotland spokesperson says they have now received some complaints in relation to JK Rowling's social media posting about the new hate crime act.
"The comments are not assessed to be criminal and no further action will be taken."
Insane that Scotland basically just doesn't have trains on a Sunday anymore because
@ScotRail
chooses not to pay their employees properly. I really hope that public ownership will lead to improved pay and conditions for workers and an actually competent service for passengers.
Anas Sarwar has said 'everybody has lost' since the passing of Scotland’s gender reforms as he suggested he would not vote for the bill again in its current form.
Yousaf resigning is the right move but, it is worth saying what a loss it is to be losing one of the strongest, most unwavering world leaders on Palestine in the western world. Despite all his mistakes, his leadership on Gaza was inspirational.
This bill was passed with a two-thirds majority of MSPs, including support from members of all five parties. The only controversy is that which has been manufactured by the media and the far-right.
Let it always be remembered that 48% of the SNP's voting membership just voted for candidates who would've happily thrown the rights of queer people right under the bus. That tells you everything you need to know about the Scottish National Party.

Hi Joanna. The headline shared in your tweet alludes to a death threat which I am very sorry to hear you have received, however I am deeply worried that by singling me out in the text of the tweet, a reasonable person could come to the false conclusion that I was responsible

Next time they try and talk about "legitimate concerns", show them this. Reprehensible transphobia from Cherry, Duffield and Hanvey. They're not even trying to hide it anymore.
Glasgow is 3 weeks away from having had L3/4 lockdown restrictions imposed for a cumulative total of a year. It should go without saying that if we're struggling right now, that's a normal human response.
Interesting that England and Wales are allowed to change the law relating to 16 and 17 year olds to be different from Scotland, but when it's the other way around Westminster issues a Section 35 order 👀
#ToryHypocrisy
Advocating transphobia in the name of women's rights whilst running an active campaign against the rights of sex workers (who are overwhelmingly women) to unionise and be protected from eviction really is the gender-critical movement in a nutshell.
@joannaccherry
for the death threat. I would ask that you please delete this tweet to avoid further misrepresentation of my actions, and any reputational damage this may cause me. Thank you in advance.

It couldn't be clearer that S35 was purely ideological. They're not even pretending to have "legitimate concerns" anymore, it's just pure, unadulterated transphobia.

The SNP deserve every bit of damage this whole fiasco does to them. Forbes has never shied away from her bigoted beliefs yet was still appointed by Sturgeon to one of the most powerful offices in the country. This whole mess is of the SNP's own making.
I didn't think it was possible to feel less enthusiastic about the prospect of a UK Labour Government and what this means for LGBTQ people until reading

It takes some brass neck to pose for a photo op for pride then just weeks later spread transphobic lies as soon as you're selected as a by-election candidate.
#NeverTrustATory
The SNP's Gender Reform Bill risks the safety of women across Scotland.
Despite opposition from their own voters, Labour’s candidate in Rutherglen & Hamilton West backs this flawed bill.
If voters want an alternative to this cosy alliance, then
@ScotTories
are offering it.
Starmer and all those working to put him in number ten will be complicit in the deaths of the trans people who will be killed because of this.
The LGBTQ+ community have long been used to hate speech coming from the Tories but to see it from the Labour leader is unconscionable.
🚨 NEW: Starmer says he AGREES with Sunak's stance on trans rights.
When asked by the Guardian if he agrees with Sunak's recent statements about trans people, Starmer replied: "Yes, of course".
He added: "a woman is a female adult".
I just want folk on here to know that I am absolutely thriving just now. 🥰🥰 Couldn't be prouder to be trans, and couldn't be prouder to be a Scottish Green. Bring on the election! 💚🏳️⚧️✊

Asked Anas Sarwar about talking to the Greens and he said: "Let's not try and pretend the Greens are neutrals in this election, the Greens are not neutrals in this election, the Greens are a branch office of the SNP."
🏴 King Charles III should remain the head of state of an independent Scotland, the deputy first minister has stressed.
John Sweeney - talking to the Today programme - doubled down on the SNP's position that "the monarch...should be the head of state of an independent Scotland."
Regardless of your view on the policy, I can be absolutely confident that if it was Scotland that wanted to do this instead of England it'd get blocked by the internal markets act.

If Scottish voters have to vote for the same party as English voters in order to secure "a seat at the table" in our democracy, then it's not a democracy. Perfectly sums up this broken union and why Scotland desperately needs our independence.
How dare Charles Mountbatten-Windsor speak of the cost-of-living crisis mere days after demanding our money be spent on his pompous coronation. People across the UK are suffering in poverty while he sits on unimaginable wealth. He has no idea.

Deeply irresponsible comments from Starmer, spreading easily disproven misinformation about the bill. Every bit of misinformation about this bill puts trans people at further risk of abuse. He has no respect for trans people and no respect for Scotland's democracy.
To suggest this is to massively undermine and disrespect the numerous LGBT+ organisations, individuals and those from across civil society who worked tirelessly on this legislation.

In order to fall foul of the bill you have to behave in a way that a reasonable person would consider threatening or abusive, with the intention of stirring up hatred and without reasonable circumstances. These people are really telling on themselves.

Ally McCoist 'guarantees' he will breach the Scottish Hate Crime Act at this weekend's Rangers vs Celtic Old Firm game

You can't say you "support equality for everyone" and then meet up with FWS who dish out some of the most vicious transphobia on this site. You can't hide behind "legitimate concerns" while hanging out with people who publicly despise trans people.
I was delighted to meet with

This is why social justice must always be at the heart of discussions on independence. Westminster will always be there to threaten progress and devolution in Scotland. Independence is the only way we can guarantee a fairer Scotland for all.
My statement on the Scottish National Party’s Gender Recognition Bill which passed today. I was disappointed to see sensible amendments to this bill voted down and believe MSPs need more time to address outstanding concerns.
The Labour party are liars who will sell out my community for votes from Tories, and have the audacity, the sheer audacity to post this kind of thing in the space of a fortnight. How dare they? How dare they.
The bill was entirely within the Scottish Parliament's devolved competencies, if it wasn't then UKgov would've used S33 not S35.
Embarrassing for a shadow minister in the Scotland office to not understand the Scotland Act. It's either incompetent or deceitful.
🚨 NEW: Labour says it will NOT repeal the Section 35 order that blocked Scotland's trans rights law.

I used to work in this store so I know first hand the abuse colleagues receive, but absolutely nothing can justify this type of ageist discrimination.
The abuse I received from pensioners was often far worse than that from teens, but we never hear of stores banning the elderly.
I don't understand how Scottish Labour and UK Labour can have different positions on these types of issues.
Believing in trans equality is a principle, not just a manifesto commitment. If UK Labour has abandoned that principle, SLab is part of a party complicit in transphobia.
Scottish Labour's position on this is clear, we support self ID for trans people and oppose the UK government's attempt to block the necessary reform we voted for.
@GlasgowPam
I'm rarely quick to defend the Scottish Government, but this is not a "both sides" issue, Pam. This is a one-sided attack from the Tories on both trans people and devolution. It's an attack on the work of everyone - yourself included - who fought so hard to get this bill passed.
It is phenomenal how much even just a selfie can wind up the transphobes. This innocuous picture of me on holiday has them foaming at the mouth, sending death threats and making horrendous comments about my body. This is the reality of being openly trans in 2023.
The past few days have reminded me of two things:
1. Being trans in Scotland is exhausting and horrible
2. Being trans in

Responding to the Section 35, Scottish Labour's Ian Murray calls on the Scottish Government to "get round the table and find workable solutions that address legitimate concerns."
Utterly spineless. Starmer is one of the most deceitful politicians of our time. No-one with an ounce of self-respect should be voting Labour under this man.

This literally isn't true. If anything the opposite is true - international student fees cross-subsidise the places for home students. There are many issues with the way unis offer places in Scotland, but this framing is misleading and xenophobic.
The SNP's cap on places offered to Scots means that our universities are forced to turn away talented homegrown students in favour of paying foreign students each year.
They must urgently lift this cap so that more Scottish students can attend universities in their own country.
I hope
@ScottishLabour

will be taking action against those MSPs who selfishly stood on manifestos committing to GRA reform, knowing they would not be supporting it when push came to shove. Deeply disappointing.
This is a democratic outrage, not least because the DRS legislation was passed by our elected Scottish parliament BEFORE the UK gov passed the power-grabbing Internal Markets Act.

In biological terms, a woman/man is someone identified as that sex by their midwife at birth, due to male/female organs.
But society created different roles for men/women for reasons not justified by biology (Gender), so the choice to assume such roles is up to the individual.
For the Tories to whine on and on about how other parties should've made GRR a free vote and then to sack their most vocal MSP in support of it is proof it was never about the principle of a free vote - it was about stoking up hate against trans people.
When I say that Labour is a party of transphobia, that includes Scottish Labour. Deeply disappointing that delegates either couldn't spot the transphobic dogwhistles, or could spot them and lapped them up anyway. Thank goodness for the unions who voted against this awful motion.
70% of Scottish Labour constituency parties voted in favour of a transphobic dogwhistle and anti-sex worker motion at their conference.
Only prevented from passing by overwhelming opposition from affiliated trade unions.
I gave evidence to the education committee in 2022 and Kerr repeatedly interrupted, spoke over me and responded to my comments with undue indignation. When a male uni principal followed me and made similar points, Kerr was markedly friendlier. He's unfit for the office he holds.
