Alfred Hitchcock used to talk about being able to play the audience like a piano, hitting each key to get a specific emotional response. In MAY DECEMBER, Todd Haynes plays us like an accordion, stretching us out in myriad ways to hit the right notes.

Watching it with an audience, I found myself cackling with delight. Stepping out into the rainy night, however, I felt like I needed to take a shower.

Calling on the DNC to hold debates isn’t an anti-Biden stance, it’s a pro-democracy stance. The RNC will hold debates with similar polling amongst their candidates and it will make their eventual nominee stronger with their base. Debates will strengthen the Dem nominee.

Dickensian with a twist. If I exchange more than a few messages with a drib-drabber, I will call them on the phone. If we're going to have a conversation, let's do it like civilized people.

Are you a dribs-and-drabs texter (i.e. each thought is its own text), or a Charles Dickens texter (i.e. you try to send one long text containing all relevant info)? Don't say "somewhere in the middle" -- everybody has a tendency!

For those keeping score at home... Things that WILL NOT get you expelled from the TN state legislature: - child molestation - domestic violence - federal investigation - peeing on your colleague's chair Things that will: - fighting to protect kids from gun violence

Wow: Tennessee state Rep. Justin Jones, one of the Dems that the GOP is trying to expel from state legislature to protesting gun violence, calls out his colleagues on the floor ‘For years, one of your colleagues, an admitted child molester, sat in this chamber – no expulsion’

Important to remember the Sullivan plaintiffs (in NYT v Sullivan) were segregationists who wanted to crush coverage of civil rights through libel suits. These were not people acting in good faith.

Right now, the $250,000 FDIC cap allows businesses to get up to $150 million of FDIC insurance through the cash sweep system and the @IntraFi network of small and mid-sized banks. Somehow, this isn’t being discussed in the debate over expanding deposit insurance. Why?

As AI tools become more advanced & accessible, fraudsters can use them to make realistic but fake content. Making or selling a tool that is effectively designed to deceive can violate the FTC Act—even if that’s not the intended or sole purpose of the tool.
