I can answer the president’s question. No, it is not an illegal campaign contribution*. The campaign covers the expense of the performance - so artist’s crew, security, staff are paid a living wage. Generally the headliner does not take a fee.
Trump is now going to have DOJ investigate Springsteen, Beyoncé, Bono, and Oprah.
