Was bored and figured we all need some good news so I... made a chart showing how much cleaner Britain's electricity now is.
Carbon intensity this month was 67% lower than for December 2012!
We should start installing these immediately in Britain — no dithering around, no trials or consultations, just get on with it.
Rarely do you see a more guaranteed vote winner either.

The sheer inability of the UK state to effectively target support for low earners feels like something we should be focusing lots more attention on fixing.
Doing so would open up space to push forward so many good policies.

Entrepreneurs and innovation will be vital to boosting the UK economy, and I’m excited to see how we can better support them.
@CharlotteCGill
I’ve been thinking this for months now and have been taking photos of the most horrible, infantilising and meaningless signs I see. This is the latest – what a way to ruin a lovely fountain!
The speaker Lindsay Hoyle is waiting for a report from Eleanor Laing about what happened in the lobbies but is understood to be taking it very seriously. He's seen the Chris Bryant photo
If these reports are true, Jacob Rees-Mogg should be applauded. Every kWh of energy saved equates to less national debt and fewer carbon emissions. Wouldn’t be surprised to see No 10 u-turn on this.
The amount of electricity Britain generates from nuclear power has halved since 1998.
That's around 50 TWh of zero-carbon power gone and from the grid.
Cool chart in this week’s

Accurately predicting weather patterns will only become more important in a world of renewables and climate change – so it’s a good thing we’re getting better at it!
Whether it's this, her foresight to wean the UK off coal, or her work with Ronald Reagan to heal the ozone layer, nobody can deny that Margaret Thatcher truly was an environmental icon.
If Britain is to realise its potential for long-run economic growth, barriers to agglomeration need to be dismantled across the board.
Making it cheaper for scientists to live and work in key cities will be essential.
🚨 Excited to announce that in the coming months I'll be writing a paper with

Rishi Sunak swerving COP27 isn’t the end of the world.
Would it be nice if he was going? Of course — but he’s the busiest man in Britain right now and I think it’s fine for him to stay at home.
Let’s judge him on what he does, or doesn’t do, to actually drive down emissions.
... But I can't help but think we dropped the ball here.
If Britain had maintained the pace of early reactor build out rates, its power would be far cleaner, the emission of countless tonnes of CO2 would have been avoided, and Net Zero would be that bit closer within reach.

The UK has brought forward its ban on using unabated coal to generate electricity, from 2025 to 2024.
Staggering to think that it accounted for 40% of generation not even a decade ago.
📢 NEWS: The UK will no longer use coal to generate electricity from October 2024.
As

Presidency, the UK is committed to driving down emissions and limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees.

Assuming Hinkley Point C comes online in 2027, the next ten will have taken 64 years to build.

Let's compare this to South Korea.
They build their first reactor in 1978, and then added another 25 - with a further four currently under construction.
In fact, since Britain built its last plant (Sizewell B in 1995), the South Koreans have added 16 reactors to their fleet.
@DanielPryorr
Hi Daniel, Eamonn here. This is correct. When vehicles combust fuel in their engines, that creates pollution. But since the lockdown, fewer vehicles have been driving around. Less traffic = less pollution! Stay safe.

Why is the NHS including this line in its vaccine outreach, as if it’s no big deal if you’d rather just not get jabbed?
I’m sure it’ll only make a marginal difference - if any - but why even put that option on the table?
Between 1950s-1980s, Britain built and average of 11 new nuclear reactors a decade.
Between 1990s-2020s, it might* build three - total.
(*We're told two reactors at Hinkley Point C will come online in 2026, after various delays.)

Immigrants are great and we should have more; green belts are crap and we should have fewer.
You know you're doing something right when your views are diametrically opposed to this rabble of troglodytes!
Every year more of Britain's green spaces disappear to development 🏗️
Unless we reduce demand on housing we risk losing the green belt forever. Once it's gone, it's gone.
🌳 Save the green belt. Reduce immigration 🌳

Pricing Pollution Properly makes the case for the UK to reform carbon pricing, and put it at the centre of its decarbonisation agenda.

If Britain is to successfully meet Net Zero, it needs to electrify transport, heating, industrial processes, etc.
Doing this will mean generating lots more clean power -

Calls to cut VAT from energy bills are predictable, but should be resisted.
There are far better ways to help those who need support with rising costs, which don't entail an expensive and difficult-to-reverse bung to wealthier households later down the line.
Lamenting missed opportunities is easy, but doesn't change much at all.
Plus, the plummeting cost of renewables has radically altered the economics of new nuclear power...
Introducing a proper carbon tax would make getting to Net Zero much easier, and much cheaper. Of course supporting measures are also needed, but this policy more than any other will be critical.
I’ll reserve judgement until the PM actually makes his speech but this looks like a misjudged step.
What a shame it is that the Conservative Party seems so intent on squandering the UK’s well-earned position as genuine leader on action against climate change.

Weak, seemingly knee-jerk argument. I'm not entirely sure what the issue is here. Int'l students make an invaluable contribution to the economy and campus life and we shouldn't build the case against them on a once-in-a-century event disrupting individual institutions' finances.

I can think of few better legacies that a Chancellor could leave than adopting road pricing — so let's hope these reports are accurate!

Few policies excite me as much as road pricing — which would futureproof motoring in the UK, and point us in a better direction on issues from climate change to productivity.
My instinctive thoughts on the Whitehall changes: Separating energy and climate out from BEIS is a good move. Simon Clarke should be the SoS. It would mean climate has a seat at the cabinet table in a way that has been sorely lacking in recent months… (1/n)
