Nothing like a building evacuation on a Friday to cap off the week. Apparently someone autoclaved a hazardous liquid on our floor (formaldehyde?). There was definitely a weird smell. So much for my sequencing! Glad DNA is stable for a while at room temp ๐

#ASV2023 is officially a wrap. What a fantastic meeting made particularly fun by the amazing people I got to reconnect with and meet. Definitely a good reintroduction to conference life after a *long* time away!

Last night we had a very successful climbers meet-up at โฆ@ActiveClimbingโฉ during #ASV2023. SO fun connecting with fellow virologist climbers from all over. Maybe we should make this an annual tradition?

One of the coolest parts about #ASV2023 so far has been connecting with fellow @williamandmary alumni. And not just W&M alums, but former Williamson Lab undergraduate researchers! Such a pleasure reconnecting with Joe (โ12) and meeting @itsmelainaj (โ21). Kurt taught us well!

#ASV2023 has already been amazing, and weโre not even 24 hours in. So much brilliant science by brilliant researchers. Looking forward to the rest of the conference!
We interviewed 15 virologist presenting at #ASV2023! Check them out! @laura_athelle @AustinJordanOff @drglasner @innalax @micro_lifter @cmarizzi @arivera1522 @femi_oluwatola @viromehunter @jangralab @FerrellTyshawn @extremegermjono @MayWang03673155

Not all scientist wear capes, but @Lakdawala_Lab does when delivering a great talk on transmission at #asv2023
@Lakdawala_Lab starts us off after the break reminding us that weโre all constantly breathing in and out pathogens and talks transmission.

Also, check out my episode of โLetโs Meet the Virologistsโ to learn a little about me and my career. Thanks to @lbthackray for having me on!
Meet Dustin Glasner @drglasner who studies the interface between #viruses and #innate_immunity. Check out his #ASV2023 Talk W8-1: Recognition of non-self viral mRNAs by the IFIT2 and IFIT3 heterodimer #LoveVirology

With #ASV2023 only a few days away, this seems like a good time to resurface here on Twitter. Come hear all about my research with โฆ@Daugherty_Labโฉ on Saturday in the Innate Immune workshop. Canโt wait to connect with my fellow virologists for the first time since 2016!

Our paper on CARD8-mediated sensing of infection by SARS-CoV-2 (and other coronaviruses and picornaviruses) is now out in @PLOSBiology ! https://t.co/7ro2yhrzVsโฆHuge congratulations to all involved! More info and thanks to our many collaborators are in the thread below:

This study describes an innate immune mechanism for sensing coronavirus and picornavirus infection by detecting the activity of virus-encoded proteases. Genetic variants among mammalian hosts affect...
New preprint out showing a cool new host- and virus-specific way that the immune system has evolved to sense coronavirus infection! https://t.co/PmGZ1CPYLS Congrats to everyone involved, especially force-of-nature first author @BriBerryTea! 1/

I haven't been on Twitter in a minute. To which platform are all the academics migrating? I've loved Twitter for engaging with the virology/immunology/public health communities. Where to next?

Let it be known, the first time I heard Mariah Careyโs โAll I Want For Christmas Is Youโ in 2022 was 9:30 am on November 4. Thanks @underthelenns. #christmas2022 #startingearly

I dessed as the Red Queen Hypothesis for Halloween this year. I was only missing a treadmill (so I could do all the running I could...)

These episodes are often intense, sometimes lasting over 2 hours, and itโs made it difficult to eat/drink/sleep. By far the strangest drug side effect Iโve ever experienced. I never gave much thought to hiccups until now - this has been so extremely unpleasant! 4/n

But then I woke up Wednesday morning and started hiccuping after breakfast, pretty severely. They eventually went away but then came back a few hours later. It happened several more times on Wednesday and has continued for over 48 hours now. 3/n

The doctor said to just treat the symptoms, and that theyโd administer a single low dose of oral dexamethasone to reduce the raging inflammation. Took the dex, went home, and enjoyed a night of relative comfort. 2/n

So this week I learned that an uncommon side effect of dexamethasone may be persistent, severe hiccups. On Tuesday morning, I woke up with a sore throat painful enough to get me to urgent care. Rapid strep and flu negative. But an extremely red and swollen throat. 1/n
