Brand designers have become obsessed with making their own fonts. But how is custom type reshaping the culture of type design itself? For @type01_ + @itsnicethat, I wrote about why so many studios are downloading Glyphs and what it means for everyone else.

“Last Sunday, the shadow came for the men, women and children of a church in Michigan. But there is still light and high beauty, and last week the light that flooded America came from people of faith who were determined to demonstrate the character of the Savior they love.”

A gutting day for Latter-day Saints. We awoke to news of our beloved Prophet passing away, then were in church services when we learned of the attack in Michigan. No words. Thank you for joining us in prayer. We don't know what else to do

It's ghoulish to mock or justify the shooting of Charlie Kirk. Rising political violence is a horror of our time. Unchecked it will lead to catastrophes none of us want to imagine. Deeply hoping he pulls through. We are all people, whatever we believe. That has to come first.

Love this: “Even small acts—like reaching out across lines of faith, culture, or politics—can open doors to healing. There is power in affording others the human dignity that all of God’s children deserve.” https://t.co/jndi8ilqh9

Terrific talk on using historical reference in smart ways (and not overly meme-ified ways). My favorite part was that it’s not about finding the most obscure resource but looking closer and more deeply at past resources and seeing “the resources behind the resources”

I had so much fun speaking about design history at the Typographics Festival yesterday (even though people did NOT laugh at my Pagliacci joke). The livestream of the talks will be up for another day or two if you'd like to watch the recording of mine!

It's literally only because it's more expensive for large organizations to license an existing typeface—especially when they work in tech and need to license for web, app, and desktop—than it is to make something from scratch
