Good work from @WStoneReports and @shmcminn visualizing and contextualizing the national picture here. A pleasure to work with these two journalists but how I long for the day when there are no more surges to cover.
COVID-19 hospitalizations are rising steeply around the country -- when does it become more than hospitals can handle?

sigh. so much for my road trip back to see #Indiana friends.
On 9/23, Indiana's @GovHolcomb lifted nearly all COVID19 restrictions https://t.co/0UBTdWGuq4 This struck me and other public health folks as dangerous A month later, how's it gone? Pretty badly. Like really badly. Don't take my word for it. Let's look at data! Thread

Latest from me about @NPR’s survey of all 50 states on contact tracing: the vast majority of states gather data from these programs, but only a handful are making that data public. Here are a few states that DO and why more should follow their lead. https://t.co/UlKxcy130t

The information includes details on where transmission is happening most. If more states shared this widely, it could shape policy and save lives, health researchers say.

Why local journalism matters, now more than ever. @nytimes was able to put together this deeply moving portrait of the lives lost in the outbreak only because of the crucial reporting on deaths by these local news organizations. https://t.co/nBbZEFgrcZ

A great reminder of the crucial role that local papers play in pushing for transparency and accountability at all times, but especially in a crisis. 👇🏽
This is not happening in a vacuum. Reporters @MiamiHerald @TB_Times and newspapers across the state have been pressing for this data, and then it ends up in these reports. Just saying.

via @axios: "Dozens of local newsrooms began laying people off this week out of fear that.. the coronavirus could severely impact their ad revenue... could push the industry into near collapse at a time when people need local news... more than ever." https://t.co/xUwxNTjFNe
