I received this notification letter from HASC Chairman Rep. Rogers (R-AL) office today. Serving on the National Commission on the Future of The Navy is an honor beyond comprehension, and I am eager to get to work.
Utterly idiotic view. For one-tenth of our annual defense budget, for one fifth of the cost to assume student loans, we have bled Russia white. One of our two, main, strategic challengers.
This is a box of sadness.
I never wanted to own a dog. I was always afraid of the idea of having to deal with a pet dying, so I vowed to never have a dog. Too much emotional work.
As many of you know, this fear was realized a couple of weeks ago. 1/ 🧵
We buy and operate these machines for fifty years each. It is a nuclear-powered airport, that moves. No other ship in the Navy is as easily upgraded--fly one group of planes off, fly a new group on. No other instrument of war is as useful across the spectrum of conflict. And in a
More US Navy aircraft carriers are underway right now than at any point in quite some years - 8 of 11. Four are deployed: GERALD R FORD CVN78 in the Mediterranean Sea; DWIGHT D EISENHOWER CVN69 in the Red Sea; RONALD REAGAN CVN76 and CARL VINSON CVN70 in the western Pacific...
So, I'm the Australian government, and I am setting out on an ambitious program to build nuclear attack submarines domestically from scratch. I consider it a national security priority. I look around the world to find where the MOST ACCOMPLISHED operators of submarines and their
Exclusive: The Australian government has hired a dozen of retired officers and former civilian leaders from the U.S. Navy as high-dollar consultants while it negotiates a nuclear sub deal with Washington.
I'm gonna vent a little. Do you mind? I have been appointed to a Congressional Commission, the National Commission on the Future of the Navy. It was supposed to begin deliberations 90 days after the enabling legislation was passed (2023 NDAA). That would have been 22 March,
because one rich Silicon Valley douchebag thinks other rich Silicon Valley douchebags are making too much money." In a million years I couldn't write something this perfect.
Remember this when you read that ships are obsolete, that aircraft carriers are obsolete, and that we really oughta just build a bunch of drones and be done with it.
"Maybe MAGA voters require their politicians to act like buffoons and propose outlandish ideas and alienate the dominant culture because that alienation is the core of the appeal."
Someday, SOMEDAY, I will understand how this Secretary and his team can so thoroughly denigrate the concept of naval presence in force structure debates while cryin' to momma Navy when the s**t gets real.
At this point, perhaps the most important plane flying off the FORD near Israel. Also--this plane and the things it provides--is (in my view) the thing that makes an aircraft carrier an aircraft carrier in the US Navy.

One can believe that the climate is changing. One can believe that human beings are contributing. One can believe that there are adaptive measures that humans can take. And one can believe that combatting climate change is not a military function. All at the same time.

It was absolutely an insurrection. A crowd was summoned, briefed, whipped up, and directed on the only day possible for their efforts to disrupt the Constitutionally designated process for turnover of power. A failed insurrection is still very much an insurrection.
There was no insurrection. That is a left/media talking point. It was a riot, yes. It was not an insurrection. Those who believe this don't actually care about the truth though.
Oh hey, sorry I missed this the other day, but as of Dec. 22, the fifteen month term for the National Commission on the Future of the Navy has six months left, and the Commission has never met because several Commissioners have yet to be appointed. Don't sweat it though,

In 2022, the Supreme Court fixed this.

I fear this is right around the corner for the Navy. This is yet another example of "you get what you pay for". We are going to have to realize that if we want a first class military, we are going to have to pay for it. This includes salaries.
No, NYT didn't botch this. They reported that Palestinians had said it was an Israeli strike, not that it was one. When news is breaking fast, all you can do is report what the key parties are saying. The Times has amended its reporting as the smoke has cleared.
Good ask. What KILLS me is the extent to which what we are doing in the Red Sea is EXACTLY what the free-world's finest Navy is SUPPOSED to be doing--freedom of the seas--and how little this is appreciated at high policy levels.
I am sorry to everyone else I've served with, but Fred Kacher is the best naval officer I've ever seen bar none. I am bursting with pride for my friend.
These cruiser decomms are killing me. They were the crown jewels of the Navy I came into. I stayed in JUST to go ad serve on one...which led to 17 more years of service.
(Whispers)--it takes five to make one, and one more in overhaul. 16 is the number to support a three hub Navy, which is minimum for a nation with our interests. Sorry to hijack with my history major math.
If it “takes three to make one” and we have four carriers on deployment at the moment, then our absolute floor is 12.
We don’t have 12.
Depending on how you measure it, during Desert Story, we deployed - just there - 6 to 8 CV/CVN.
I need to get something off my chest re: Navy force structure. There is a certain breed of ghoul who believes he is clever when he says "but you cannot man the fleet you have". This is true. But manning the fleet is a part of the larger increase in resources needed. Pay Sailors
I would have preferred leaving the ship with its current name for the short life it has remaining, while naming the next name-able FLIGHT III Destroyer after Robert Smalls so that his name might be in the fleet for decades.

A brief reminder that the 2023 NDAA created the National Commission on the Future of the Navy, and the legislation required Commissioners to be appointed within 90 days of the legislation passing. That date was reached 90 days ago, and four Commissioners remain un-named.
