The most underrated climate tech is fusion. I keep hearing "it's decades off, won't be as cheap as solar, we just don't need it." It's closer than you think. And when it arrives, limitless, CO2-free, around-the-clock power will be a step function improvement for civilization.
So we’re all on the same page, Howard Schultz is a Republican too scared to primary Trump. Until he can show how his policies are more than a checklist of platitudes Mitt Romney might endorse, that’s how he should be covered.
Got a call with our results today and, sure enough, tested positive. Extremely fortunate the last five days have only seen symptoms improve. Whole family including baby are basically back full strength. But, means community spread in NY was rampant as of at least three weeks ago.
I just got swabbed for COVID-19 in NY, and the experience leaves me feeling so much more paranoid about America’s ability to get a grip on this crisis.
The best thing American democracy has going for it is a profound shift in the type of people running for office (as Democrats). It’s not just that they’re younger, diverse, and more progressive. It’s that most haven’t been planning their presidential campaigns since they were 6.
Raising $800m for climate-unfucking, carbon-sucking, planet-cooling startups wasn’t always the plan. But the air is thick with smoke. There’s water in the streets. The heat is unrelenting. No more time to lose.
@lowercarbon
is all in. Let’s go:
I just got swabbed for COVID-19 in NY, and the experience leaves me feeling so much more paranoid about America’s ability to get a grip on this crisis.
I somehow forgot the most troubling detail. If I hadn’t had insurance, I would’ve had to pay $125 to the urgent care facility and $1,000 to the diagnostic company out of pocket, on the spot, for testing. This is so insanely regressive. We need free, accessible testing now.
If the State of the Union ever takes place, the Democratic response should be engineered to overshadow whatever garbage Trump says. Extremely short, pointed, and crafted for social media.
Our 2 year old is recovering from COVID for the second time. First was in early March 2020 when it swept through NY. Second was worse. Fever, dips in O2 sat, painful cough. Parents of young children: severe cases may be rare, but don’t assume lasting benefits of prior infection.
History books will make it look obvious Trump would be a one-termer. Just a glitch in the constitutional matrix. But today when our memory is fresh, let’s clap it out for the organizers, candidates, lawyers, volunteers, and donors who saved our democracy with a goal line stand 🙏
I’m not superstitious, but in the White House I picked up a habit from
@danpfeiffer
and
@AlyssaMastro44
(but mostly Dan) of eating chicken tenders on big nights (e.g SOTU). About to put in a big order. If you love America, you too should procure mountains of breaded chicken.
I spend most days with founders and activists working on reducing emissions and sucking CO2 directly out the air, but stories like this are a wake up call that we desperately need to buy ourselves more time
They still won’t test you unless you’ve been in contact with a confirmed case, which is a nonsensical standard in the context of community spread. But they don’t even ask you for a name, probably because of medical privacy laws. But as a result it’s a meaningless question.
Imagine if rather than run for president Joe Biden had announced he was going to spend this year campaigning for Democrats in places the primaries wouldn’t taken them that we need to win in 2020.
The president and his family OWE $400 MILLION TO THE IRS and scientists just told us THE PLANET IS DYING. If you’re a national political reporter and not spending your time covering one of these two stories right now, you are missing the point.
This isn’t meant as a critique of the doctor and nurses who tested me and to whom I am very grateful. I’m sharing because it confirms how incredibly unprepared and disorganized our healthcare system remains in responding to this crisis.
The most infuriating part of this dystopian dumpster fire is that it’s distracting us from the single thing that actually matters at this moment, which is the vaccine. In a rational world, speeding up inoculation is the only thing the media and public officials would focus on.
Such an embarrassing mistake. Can someone who knows how to code please help us?
Friends, avert your eyes. Haters, show us your mercy. To everyone else, I implore you, do not under any circumstances click on the link below:
Hey
@wordpress
, our intern accidentally posted this unfinished draft on our site and our webmaster is still stuck at Burning Man. Can you help us take this down ASAP before anyone sees it?
Whatever you do, please, nobody click on this. 🙏🏼😳
My personal experience is that the best antidote to gloomy climate reports is working on solutions. So if the latest IPCC report has you down, here are jobs at companies founded to unfuck the climate. Time to get to work:
Goes almost without saying there is zero effort to do contact tracing. Medical staff didn’t even encourage me to alert people I or my partner had been in contact with (that said, our family has been self-quarantined going on 9 days, even before symptoms started).
NBA players did something I have been waiting four years for Democrats to do: signal in stark and unambiguous terms that what we are living through is neither normal nor tolerable. Let’s learn from them.
I'll never forget the first time I heard
@sacca
eloquently distill
@lowercarbon
's mission to "unfuck the planet." It's been all out ever since. We've teamed up with 30+ wildly ambitious teams bringing down CO2 in the atmosphere, and just getting started:
@danpfeiffer
4. Kushner has a loyal assistant who sits where I used to, possesses a full clearance, and transmits classified information by blinking in Morse Code 🧐
One big question we ask in our investment memos
@lowercarbon
: If a startup does so well that we get rich, by how much could they lower atmospheric CO2? For
@antoraenergy
, the answer was 10s of billions of tons per year. This is a fossil fuel killer.
Buying carbon removal will soon be taken by markets as the clearest signal a company is thinking long term. Plus CEOs will want to be mentioned in the same breath as Stripe, Microsoft, and Shopify.
If we win, we can’t ever let an election come down to the margin of voter suppression ever again. Automatic registration, plentiful machines, opt-out vote from home, and every step a simple UX. These are table stakes.
The new products, technical breakthroughs, big customer sign ups, massive new funding rounds in the
@lowercarbon
portfolio just the last couple of weeks have been nonstop. I would be exhausted if there wasn’t so much adrenaline. Just an unreal time to be building climate tech.
The sheer number of climate startups we’re meeting these days
@lowercarbon
is inspiring, but it also gives me a panic attack. We need an extra set of hands! If you know a thing or two about manipulating biology to reduce and remove CO2, come work with us:
Working on climate can be a downer because, with the technologies and policies on the table today, the future can look dire. At the same time there are companies being built right now with the potential to materially lower atmospheric CO2 this decade and that is deeply inspiring.
There should be a stats page for every member of Congress. It should be really easy to tell things like how lazy or active they are relative to their seniority cohorts, their success rate at getting amendments passed, how many days they spend fundraising, etc. Who’s doing this?
The total lack of precautions was not just a risk to the people who would come after me in that room, but to myself and my family because presumably the room would have some lingering virus from someone else.
A few weeks ago the team at Zap flipped the switch on a reactor that will surpass Q=1, the point where a fusion device generates more energy than it consumes. Now they’ve got $160m from
@lowercarbon
and friends to make it happen even sooner.
Kula Bio's drop-in replacement for synthetic fertilizer costs less, yields more, and zeroes out nitrogen runoff.
@Lowercarbon
is backing them again because the faster they grow the sooner we can turn out the lights at Haber-Bosch plants.
Venture firms are investing $50 million in Boston-based Kula Bio so the startup can ramp up production of a more environmentally friendly nitrogen fertilizer
Is that because there was a separate entrance for suspected COVID-19 cases? Nope, they walked me through the front door and into an exam room. No instructions to wash my hands (maybe bc I was wearing gloves and a mask). No paper covering the chair I sat in.
Real dairy, without cows, lactose, or about 90% of the carbon emissions. The team at
@eatformo
is cooking up what is, for this Frenchman, one of the most eagerly anticipated climate products yet.
It’ll never happen, but a sequence of Scrap filibuster > DC PR statehood > pack the Court > undo Trump’s tax loopholes for rich people > $2000 checks > climate bill > free preschool > paid leave > legalize weed would work better if crammed into one month than spread over 2 years
Still early days, but the Outback cowboys
@SoilCarbonCo
are working on what could be one of the single cheapest and easiest technologies to pull down billions of tons of CO2: dipping seeds in fungus
The whole
@heartaerospace
team could squeeze in the cabin of their 19-seat electric plane. They just announced a $35m raise and pre-orders for 200 planes to United and Mesa. This should inspire small teams with unreasonable ambitions all over the world.
I walked to the urgent care facility to minimize contact with anyone. I was bracing myself for a long line, so when I arrived and discovered the place to be essentially empty I was a little surprised.
If you’re a journalist reporting on Trump’s plan to blow up our democracy, you have an obligation to mention the hundreds of millions of dollars Trump owes the IRS, state governments, and his lenders, which will be much harder to wriggle out of if he’s no longer president.
Scoop: President Trump plans to brandish obituaries of people who supposedly voted but are dead — plus hold campaign-style rallies — in an effort to prolong his fight against apparent insurmountable election results, four Trump advisers tell me
If you thought the White House staff and Cabinet Secretary appointments have been great for climate, wait until you start hearing about the teams getting built at agencies. The Biden Administration is not messing around.
Thrilled to share that I have joined the Biden Administration to be Chief of Staff of Fossil Energy at DOE. Excited to join an amazing team and refocus this office on climate and equity + expand work on carbon removal, industrial decarbonization, carbontech and more.
Has a chief of staff ever received the sort of universal acclaim as
@RonaldKlain
right now? All segments of the party, from the highest profiles, just gushing. Totally deserved, still surprising.
The planet will keep getting hotter until we zero out carbon pollution. It will stay hot until we remove trillions of tons of CO2 from the atmosphere.
@Verdoxcc
has made some brain-melty advances that will help on both fronts.
We’re excited to introduce Verdox, an electric carbon capture and removal company that launched today with $80M in committed capital from a syndicate including
@Breakthrough
Energy Ventures,
@PreludeVC
, and
@Lowercarbon

Reading Running Tide’s plan to bury gigatons of CO2 on the ocean floor was one of the most hopeful days I’ve had
@lowercarbon
. There’ll be more to say, but for now all you need to know is fisherman-turned-ocean-robot-commander Marty Odlin is the real deal
Rich parts of the world have (shamefully) consoled ourselves with the idea that climate change will be worse for the poor. Money would be an umbrella keeping us in the shade. If year-round wildfires in CA don’t shatter that delusion and force a reckoning, I don’t know what will.
"'There’s no number of helicopters or trucks that we can buy, no number of firefighters that we can have, no amount of brush that we can clear that will stop this,' Eric Garcetti, the mayor of Los Angeles, told me." (1/2)
In which a trio of disarmingly humble but absurdly ambitious cofounders set out to turn every big rig into a roving carbon removal device. Coming to a highway near you in 2022.
The 2 million semi-trucks in the US move 70% of all goods across the country.
This is responsible for nearly 5% of the country’s emissions.
@remoracarbon
captures the CO₂ from the tailpipes of these trucks 🚛
I actually read the whole Mueller report. It’s clear Donald Trump obstructed an investigation into an attack on America and into his own behavior. Presidents are not above the law, and Congress has a constitutional duty to start impeachment proceedings.
#WarrenTownHall
Fusion is going from sci-fi to steel-in-the-ground: DOE just announced $46m in awards to help eight fusion startups build their first power plants. We're proud to say that Lowercarbon-backed teams brought home the bacon, earning 70% of the total funding.
The Amazon has tipped over from absorbing the world’s carbon to being a net source of CO2, years earlier than most forecasts predicted. It’s on track to becoming a desert in a couple decades. We need to buy more time. Research sun reflection now.
Congrats to
@heirloomcarbon
,
@running_tide
and all the other badass teams that sold negative emissions to Stripe. Very early days, but these will be some of the titans of one of the biggest and fastest growing industries in the world.
Capture CO2 with a device compact enough to sit on your desk? Sounds almost spit take-worthy if you’ve studied the space at all. It’s also the flavor of absurd ambition that gets our attention
@lowercarbon
. More on what the Holy Grail team is cooking up:
Trump isn’t contesting results to protect his ego. It’s about enhancing his negotiating position. He has state and federal criminal exposure, owes hundred of millions of dollars in back taxes, and has $400m in loans coming due. That’s the fucking story.
THEY TRACKED INDIVIDUAL TREES FOR 30 YEARS AND ARE NOW PROJECTING THE AMAZON WILL GENERATE MORE CO2 THAN IT CONSUMES BY THE MID-2030s. PLEASE START WORKING TO REVERSE GLOBAL WARMING. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A SCIENTIST.
This doesn’t mean they can’t also be principled and effective (some are). But it’s a mindset that is fundamentally misaligned with representative democracy. At its core the job should be about customer service, which requires humility, open-mindedness, and lots of listening.
Like, “Does anyone still take this guy seriously? He’s weaksauce and his weakness is infecting our country. When he’s not tweeting about the show he’s watching on Fox News, he’s sucking up to our enemies. He’s corrupt and surrounds himself with cronies...”
Chip in to help Ayana reach $100k for climate-focused, down ballot Democrats. Not only is this the best way to ensure local action on climate, but the reverse coattails will help Biden/Harris in key states. Eight days to go, so no time like right f***in’ now:
This is the high tech version of something Republicans have done literally for decades. When I worked for the Obama campaign in Ohio in 2008 they dropped official-looking flyers in Black neighborhoods saying ‘Republicans vote Tuesday, Democrats on Wednesday.’
BREAKING: UK’s Channel 4 has obtained a huge data leak from Trump’s 2016 campaign. The leak reveals personal data of almost 200 million voters used by Trump’s campaign, which manipulated algorithms to deter millions of Black Americans from voting.
They never planned for this. They felt called to it. I’ve met dozens of these candidates over the last year. They aren’t running to fulfill a lifelong, self-aggrandizing fantasy but out of a motivation to serve people better.
Wanna check out
@PodSaveAmerica
in Oakland next week? Bid for tickets here and support kids battling pulmonary hypertension (and lifetime caps on coverage) like my goddaughter Megan
Charm redefines what it means to “ship product.” This is what happens when you combine hardcore roboticists, rocket scientists, and company builders whose stated mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm of CO2. Still a very, very long way to go, but moving faster every day.
Today we're excited to announce we've completed delivery of
@Shopify
's 1,000 ton CO₂e removal purchase ahead of schedule! We're delighted that
@Shopify
is also purchasing an additional 3,000 tons CO₂e removal from us. Read more here:
Working in government is insanely rewarding, but hard, exhausting, and people like to yell at you. I wish more people knew

Tala is methodically, unobtrusively building the world's most ambitious financial technology. There is even something a little subversive to
@shivsiroya
's vision that the world's best financial products should be reserved for the people who have, until now, been locked out.
Science is wild. This research suggests that a massive volcanic eruption in Alaska in 43 BCE cooled temperatures 7 degrees celcius in the Mediterranean, leading to extreme precipitation and crop failures that precipitated the fall of the Roman Republic.

I know we’re supposed to pretend to be happy White House press briefings are back. But, they’re terrible! We can respect press freedoms and foster transparency without indulging a daily barrage of moronic questions from the gossip columnists who work in the briefing room.
I’m never more impressed
@lowercarbon
than when we hear an insanely technical pitch in fluent English from a founder on the other side of the world. Related, if you’re working on climate and not backing international teams you’re missing out.
