This is infuriating! Does
@USC
not recognize the morbid irony of offering a minor in resistance to genocide and then not allowing the schools valedictorian, who studied this, who has worked hard to earn that moment, to speak during an ongoing genocide? We've really seen it ALL
@directedbyrian
@USC
WOW this is absolutely shameful. To silence a student studying resistance to genocide and has worked hard to be valedictorian, to stop her from speaking out, this is beyond sad.
An organizer at the action at Grand Central tonight said that action is the antidote to despair and I want to lift up everyone lead organizing, leading civil disobedience, planning actions, disrupting the status quo during this crisis and inspiring others to walk alongside
Congressmember
@RitchieTorres
I am one of your constituents and urge you to demand a ceasefire. This is genocide. We’re making our voices heard on Fordham Road.
Joined a Palestine solidarity action at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Tremendously inspired by the leaders standing against genocide and shutting it all down

How is it that when NY state has underfunded public schools it takes lawsuits + multiple years of organizing for the state to fully fund our schools (+ the fight continues)
But when Gov. Hochul calls for bag checks/the National Guard to be in the subway they appear hours later
New: Gov. Hochul announces that she is deploying 750 National Guard members into the NYC subways to conduct bag checks, in addition to another 250 law enforcement members. She is also proposing a bill to ban people convicted of a violent crime on the subway from public transit
As a B/UM DSA member and teacher in the Bronx, I’ve been inspired by Congressman Bowman’s leadership for years. And I’ll be voting yes on DSA endorsing him!
Why? I’m proud to share a DSA case for Bowman written by a fellow B/UM DSA member 🧵
FEEL FREE TO SHARE: 📣 I’ve worked to compile a 22 page (and counting!) doc of resources connected to high school reading/science of reading in secondary spaces from the group chat I’m part of here on Twitter!
Today!!!! I’m inspired, I’m elated, I wasn’t ready! I sat down at my desk at school for prep time, checked my phone, *audibly* gasped and announced to the teacher and students there (literally as calmly as I could):
I am beyond embarrassed that my rep in congress,
@RitchieTorres
@RepRitchie
voted to censure
@RashidaTlaib
@RepRashida
and his continuous distortion of any criticism of Israel's genocide of innocent Palestinians as antisemitic. We must vote Ritchie OUT.
I’m honored to have had the opportunity to share why I’m so excited to vote for Congresswoman
@AOC
as a teacher,
@nycDSA
member and Bronx resident
The Congresswoman is a fighter for the Bronx + a student of the Bronx, knowledgeable about its past as she works to forge its future
We deserve high-quality early childhood education for all families, tuition-free public college for all students, and thriving post-graduate careers without the burden of student debt. We can win it when we fight for each other.
Vote for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on June 25th.
@heymrsbond
I wonder if there will ever be a successful reimagining and reform of the public schools nationwide. I feel like there's a lot of promise in both reading instruction reform + super relevant and authentic project-based learning, but 🙃 I just don't know
I recently finished listening to the entirety of
@ehanford
's
#SoldAStory
and feel a lot of gratitude to be beginning my teaching career at the same time as this work is in the world. Truly some of the most consequential reporting of our time. 🧵
WOW
@Tinashe
was AMAZING tonight at Warsaw!!!! Her voice! Her stage presence! The incredible setlist!!! Her work is FOUNDATIONAL to today’s future R&B sound!
I’m laughing I’m sorry. “Systematic phonics instruction is essential. That is a settled issue.” Can the professors that signed this letter confirm that phonics instruction is even taught at their university
I’ve started my work as a high school Literacy Coordinator in the Bronx (🙅🏾♀️!) and am super, *super* interested in Structured Literacy/SoR for older students
I’ve got some plans but still ? around: engagement
I know it’s make or break. This is something I want to tweet ab more
Every student should have access to an education that ensures they are literate, learning about our world, its history, its inequalities. Then practicing critical thinking + relevant skills so they’re meeting the urgent demand for problem solving + creativity + reform *today*
@AOC
@esglaude
Thank you for sharing this
@AOC
I have no words. This cycle we're living in, in real time. A lot of people don't want to go this deep and truly acknowledge this. I don't know if I can go here myself.
Here’s a recording of my testimony at today’s hearing
I talked about how the new NYC Reads initiative, which I think is a great DOE initiative aligned w/ the science of reading, could stop completely with the continuation of mayoral control (like so many initiatives before) +
I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to join fellow speakers in the Bronx this evening nearly *unanimously* against mayoral control
More hearings ahead, the next is in Queens on Dec 18th:
JAMAAL BOWMAN, AIPAC’s worst nightmare, joins NYC-DSA phone bankers THIS Sunday 6/9!! With only 8⃣days until early voting, we need to keep cranking it up. Palestine is on the Ballot! Can you team up with
@JamaalBowmanNY
& crush AIPAC this Sunday?
📞
Just leaving this evening's
@nycDSA
phonebank for
@JamaalBowmanNY
and the energy was so so powerful, we made over 20,000 CALLS! 📞
Who's ready to double that number and join me next Sunday, same time? Let's go!
Voted in Belmont! Voted on the
@NYWFP
line! Voted knowing there’s still much collective work ahead, knowing we’ve all got to be dedicated to that work. 🗳️
#VoteWFP
Making calls now for
@JamaalBowmanNY
alongside so many people!!!! 📞 We *reject* AIPAC, we *reject* MAGA money, we *reject* blatantly racist and false ad buys. We're fighting to KEEP Rep. Bowman, a – pro-ceasefire, pro-working class power leader – representing NY-16 in Congress!
I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to join fellow speakers in the Bronx this evening nearly *unanimously* against mayoral control
More hearings ahead, the next is in Queens on Dec 18th:
AIPAC is spending *inconceivable* amounts of money on this race. Only further highlights Rep
@JamaalBowmanNY
commitment to working class people + will be the biggest check on dark money when he WINS
@raptalksk
This is so wonderful, beautiful and cool to see their awe and respect, especially definitely hearing MF DOOM’s clear influence on their music though I’m not as well-versed in his sound
AOC will always be a fighter for NY-14. A fighter who has never taken a dollar of lobbyist money. A fighter for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, a living wage, tuition-free public college, and affordable housing.
Vote on June 25th. Vote early from June 15th to June 23rd.
@AOC
This is so wonderful Congresswoman!!! Your leadership and positive impact in our world is a dream and a vision of teachers you’ve had along the way.
Uplifted by Assembly Member
@ZohranKMamdani
’s EXCEPTIONAL leadership
So many calling for a ceasefire are being dragged out of rooms, drowned out by yells
AM Mamdani, as an elected official and invited speaker, calls for ceasefire here — and they dare not interrupt/take pause
I was invited to an event last night where
@RepJeffries
was the chief guest.
I was given the speaking slot immediately before him.
This is how I ended my remarks.
Ceasefire now.
Today is my last day as Communications Coordinator in the office of
@AMAndersonAD31
. I am leaving to continue graduate school
@TeachersCollege
and begin my teacher career this fall.
It has been an honor to serve Assembly District 31 and work alongside so many inspiring leaders!
So excited to be here at
@NYWFP
’s Bronx Chapter Launch!!! Inspired by the leaders here and encouraged to learn about the expansion of a growing movement right in my neighborhood.
My heart’s so heavy. I think that all of America’s teachers and students should pick a day soon and, from that day forward, refuse to return to school buildings until gun control legislation moves along. We’ve got to pause our world and refuse to move another step forward.
I've decided to accept a new high school Special Education teaching position with a literacy focus, providing me with the opportunity to contribute to a school-wide evidence-based HS literacy effort. Looking forward but tough to say goodbye to my last school + its great community
@mediatkd1
@TeamKanyeDaily
@takashipom
Ah this is so emotional and awesome to see — I immediately think of how Kanye has always had such a huge connection to LV since the start of his career so to see his best friend be recognized in this space/at this level!!!! What a journey for them!
In these horrible past few months with increased witness to affronts to humanity in Palestine, Congressmember Bowman has been a steadfast pro-Palestinian leader in D.C. Him winning re-election despite record AIPAC spending will show that Palestinian solidarity can + must win.
In my opinion, to truly reform NYC public schools the first thing we need a mayor that is for the end of mayoral control. And has the humility and foresight to work with city and state legislatures to end it.
I often think about the cognitive dissonance it must take to be Mayor and perpetually cut from school + social services then send out press releases like everything is okay
I’m definitely convinced the ~8% could be found elsewhere in the budget??
New Yorkers confronted
@NYCMayor
about his budget cuts: why is he cutting ~8% from schools, CUNY, libraries, & social services, while funding NYPD overtime, misconduct, & robot dogs, & Dept. of Corrections abuse & mismanagement?
Eric lied & called us disrespectful.
#CareNotCuts
@nhannahjones
So many references I’m only thinking about now reading your thread! This movie is EXCELLENT! I might be reaching- but maybe a critique of America’s history of enslavement, oppression, imperialism, colonialism, leading to the very standing globally that results in the cyberattack?
I *have* to tweet again ab how
@TheWritingRevol
has a positive impact on my life as a first year Special Education teacher.
@JudithCHochman
+
@natwexler
have created a method that is accessible, clear, possible to read + implement, connected to free resources, *then* paid ones
New York Governor Kathy Hochul says genocide is just the natural way people respond to being attacked.
“If Canada someday ever attacked Buffalo, I'm sorry my friends, there would be no Canada the next day.
That’s a natural reaction.”
We need to pass the
#BuildPublicRenewables
Act! Climate change is here and sadly this past week might have just been a preview. NY can and must build public power. Thankful for the legislative leaders + activists demanding change.
@nycDSA
@NYCDSA_Ecosoc
This is SO unfortunate for us that Biden is going to lose the election I’m sorry but what
Not even a “I commend the young people for trying to make their voices heard” he’s just like my answer is NO
Reporter: Have the protests forced you to reconsider any of the policies with regard to the region?
Biden: No
Apparently Biden is not swayed by the mass killing of children, international law, or an election as a growing number of Americans are appalled by his policies.
Growing up I think I thought if we saw images and videos we are seeing now…the world would stop. The genocide has made an absolute farce of so many people and institutions of “power” and “justice”
The complete failure of our governments and institutions to intervene in this genocide is deeply, deeply saddening and disillusioning. I’m encouraged by people and orgs standing for what’s right and I’m going to keep doing what I can, I’ll join actions, I’ll teach, I’ll amplify
America being the wealthiest nation in the history of the world and simultaneously struggling to provide all students with equitable access to literacy/the *best* possible reading instruction is literally difficult to understand
Not only do we need to
#RestoretheCuts
immediately, we need to increase funding even *more* for more evidence-based reading programs and training based on the science of reading and including systematic phonics instruction
This just arrived in the mail for me today and it looks great! Just starting to look through, SO much information and also actionable steps for educators and families
The new edition of
@AFTunion
's American Educator magazine features a bunch of articles with good info for teachers and parents about how to help kids learn to read.
Congressmember Bowman has collaborated w/ state DSA organizers to push DSA-led legislation forward, like the Build Public Renewables Act. He’s helped to advance DSA efforts in spite of a rocky relationship with the org b/c he *genuinely* believes in similar organizing goals
Talking to voters in Flatbush about
@David4BK
and it’s an absolute joy to be here. David is a leader that is inspiring hope, productive struggle, and movement building amongst a wonderfully + powerfully diverse coalition. Thankful!!!!
One example of why we need to end mayoral control is: the Mayor is reportedly approving *more* DOE budget cuts (how is this even possible) which is completely antithetical to his administration’s (critical) efforts to improve literacy
@osse2021
Stay safe Chi. Not dramatic at all, truly noticing a devastating shift and a lot of anxiety thinking of this — but so hopeful in your leadership + the upcoming City Council, brings strength to know you feel the same + will speak to it in spaces of power as well
Shout out to Dr. Anita Archer and the work the DOE is leading around reading interventions for secondary students with a focus on identifying and supporting students with dyslexia! It’s happening.
Shame on President Biden and shame on politicians and public figures remaining silent and complicit during genocide. It’s not and will never be “complicated” to stand against genocide. I just will never forget how absolutely *depraved*
Just voted and there’s already a lot of Election Day energy in Belmont!!! 🗳 Voted for
@JumaaneWilliams
@AnaMariaforNY
and Emmanuel Martinez in Assembly District 78. Looking forward to an Election Day phone bank for
@KeronAlleyne
and getting out the vote for
@TheTimHunter
!
Join us tomorrow evening at 6:30pm for a virtual town hall about the Interborough Express, a transformative rapid transit project to connect Brooklyn & Queens.
We'll share an overview of actions taken on the project so far, including the Planning & Environmental Linkages study.
What has the power to cut through 20 milllion dollars worth of AIPAC attack ads against
@JamaalBowmanNY
?
This does. People coming together to tell voters the truth: Palestine is on the ballot. Join us on Wednesday, June 12 to make it undeniable.
📞
Congressmember Bowman + Jonathan Soto both winning in the Bronx would be HUGE continued growth for DSA Bronx organizing!!! 🙅🏾♀️ We can coordinate join canvasses and share their connected organizing vision at the doors
Fellow educators, I have a question: is memorization obsolete? Is it worthwhile for students to memorize information "cold" these days in a world of AI and Chromebooks and algorithms? 🌐
Phone banking for
@David4BK
this evening!!! 📞 the first voter I spoke with was *outside as we spoke canvassing for David*!!! The campaign’s energy is truly inspiring!
@jemelehill
@realkimstover
@donlemon
I'm so saddened and I'm so angry. I'm so sorry. It's unacceptable. The evil that Trump evoked - it was already there - but the way that he amplified it, made nods to it along the way - I don't have the words. It's just unacceptable and I still don't understand all of last week
Finally, Congressman Bowman, as a Black former school leader committed to disrupting the status quo in D.C., works to bring democratic socialist vision to working class communities of color every day. Glad to vote in support + encouraging fellow DSA members to consider the same.
Really hope that TC will pivot to using its institutional wealth and name recognition to amplify super urgent evidence-based work happening rn around reading instruction around the country
@LaurenJauregui
Lauren completely same here. I’m heartbroken. It’s too much. In the future I’ll always always always remember how you spoke out against the atrocities we are seeing right now and kept it so real and honest, it means the world, God bless you
