Odell Beckham’s partner is due to have their son any minute now. “I’m on standby,” Beckham said. So, what if that call comes Sunday morning? “I’d have to make a call back to him and ask him to wait 36 hours.”
Demaryius Thomas’ football feats were incredible, but this is the man I’ll remember: The guy who was kind, always smiling, who was Uncle DT to so many kids, and who was always thoughtful and sincere in our professional relationship.
This sideline report is incredible. Stadium security thought there was a shirtless fan on the field and intended to tackle him before they realized it was Antonio Brown
Just left the Broncos locker room. It's been about 40 mins since the game ended. Russell Wilson was still sitting in his locker, in full pads, deep in quiet conversation with Nathaniel Hackett.
Among the things Rodgers said today was that an NFL doctor told him if he was vaccinated he couldn't catch or spread COVID. A league source said Rodgers never spoke with a league MD or one of the jointly appointed infectious disease experts, though it was offered.
My takeaway from Antonio Brown's 25-minute media session: He seems to believe he's a victim. He mentioned haters and doubters.
Remember this when you see AB redemption arc stories this week: This was all self-inflicted.
11 months ago, Andy Reid stood up in a privileged session at NFL owners meetings and passionately and directly asked league owners why Eric Bieniemy hadn't gotten a head coaching job. Here we are, another coaching cycle complete, and EB still hasn't gotten an offer.
Vic Fangio: "I was disappointed on several levels, that our QBs put us in that position, that our QBs put the league in that position. We count on them to be the leaders of our team, the leaders of our offense, and those guys made a mistake."
OK I never want to hear a professional athlete or coach complain about having to play at Denver's altitude. Taylor Swift just performed back to back 3.5-hour shows -- IN HEELS -- at Mile High without TV timeouts and with outfit changes. Greatest athlete of our Era.
Just a reminder that the Browns gave Watson $230M three months ago, said they are confident in the background work they did into the QB. Watson has said he has "no regrets."
Really hard to reconcile that with new accusations, all in line with the first 22 suits.
In their rush to trade for an elite player, the Browns failed their vetting process of Watson, believed his lies and not only trusted him, but gave him $230M. And if he wins, many there might say it was worth it. It's disgusting.
The White House will hold a conference call in 25 minutes to provide details of President Trump's involvement in getting the Big Ten to return to play. This is supposed to be a "background call" so I guess in this case anonymous sources are okay?
Ravens practiced with wet balls Thursday, given that the forecast calls for 100 percent rain for Sunday’s game vs. the 49ers.
“Our equipment staff did a great job of soaking those things pretty good,” offensive coordinator Greg Roman said.
BREAKING — Urban Meyer is deep in negotiations to return to Fox Sports, sources tell
@richarddeitsch
.
Meyer spent two years on Fox's "Big Noon Kickoff" show before taking the head coaching job with the Jaguars.
The fencing response is an immediate “no-go” symptom under leagues concussion protocols. The NFL-NFLPA are already investigating how the concussion protocol was handled last week, after Tua staggered (another, in theory, no-go symptom).
And we're back with more ✨ personal news✨
I'm excited to share that I have joined
@ringer
as a senior editor, where I'll be helping lead the NFL coverage.
This is a career pivot, and one I've been thinking about for quite a while. I'm ready for the challenge.
Feels **real** icky to wake up to Football as Usual news about Deshaun Watson, as if the 22 pending sexual assault lawsuits in civil court and an NFL investigation aren’t part of the equation.
The NFL’s testing data from the first three weeks of training camp found a 7x higher incidence rate in unvaccinated players. And nearly all cases in vaccinated individuals were asymptotic or mild symptoms. Vaccines work, period.
Bill Belichick: "Your implication that the vaccination solves every problem...has not been substantiated. The number of players and coaches and staff members who have been infected with COVID after being vaccinated is a pretty high number. I wouldn't lose sight of that."
Per a source informed of the investigation, Ridley placed three parlays (3-, 5- and 8-teams) and bet on the Falcons to win. All of the bets were placed between Nov. 23-28 -- the Falcons beat Jacksonville on Nov. 28. All of the bets were via a mobile app in Florida.
My daughter was born during training camp three years ago. Today, she is making her fourth annual visit to Broncos camp. She said she wants to, “bring her pencil so she can write things about football.” ❤️
I stand with
@katienolan
and
@MariaTaylor
, who are both way too talented, smart and good at their jobs to have to put up with amount of shit men in this business and on this site throw at them.
I’ll say: Resigning because you don’t want to be a “distraction” is different than resigning because you said / wrote / acted in a way that’s not befitting of a leader of a diverse locker room
Bieniemy has interviewed for 17 head coaching vacancies with 16 teams since 2019. Last March, Reid went out of his way to explain to league owners the role Bieniemy has in designing and calling the Chiefs offense.
Trading Tyreek Hill would make no sense for either side from a football perspective. Hill is in the perfect system with perfect quarterback to maximize his skills. Hill is a one-of-one talent who will be impossible to replace. But business is business, man.
Unpaid internships, in journalism and other industries, are a massive barrier to entry to many marginalized groups. Having done them doesn't mean you didn't work hard or sacrifice. But it's a privilege to be able to start that way in the first place that so many can't afford.
Just a week ago, Arians told Peter King that AB was a "model citizen" and history had changed. Then he no comments the beat writers after this AB meltdown. Arians needs to be accountable here. (And calling Glazer later doesn't count)
The discussion from Michaels and Herbstreit has been OK and credit to them for quoting a doctor rather than speculating. But Amazon needs to answer for the decision to show the replay so many times. Felt gratuitous and invasive and unnecessary.
Different view at Mile High tonight for me for my daughter’s first football game. She was very into pre-game introductions; she enjoyed Thunder the horse and the fireworks and getting to wave at
@minakimes
before the game.
I don't know how, as a reporter or simply as human being with critical thinking skills, you could watch the Deshaun Watson press conference and still report/tweet that he's remorseful.
So, I guess it's time for some ✨personal news✨
Today is my last day at The Athletic. I'm excited about a new professional adventure I'll tell you about soon. But for now, I just want to say:
Thank you.
It is totally understandable we won't hear from McDermott or Taylor tonight. It would be very helpful to hear more from the NFL, though, about why players were initially told they had 5 minutes to get ready and then why it took an hour to call the game off for the night.
The race to trade for Deshaun Watson and pay him $230 million feels … gross. It’s complicated and messy, and I have many questions for the Browns about what comes next.
New column for
@TheAthletic
:
New Browns Kevin Stefanski has hired Callie Brownson as his Chief of Staff -- I believe this is the first time a woman has been hired for this NFL role. Brownson recently worked as intern in Buffalo, and was previously an asst coach at Dartmouth.
And I'll say it again, it feels like a major misstep for the NFL not to turn the 17th game into some sort of inter-conference annual rivalry game. Geographic, historical, manufactured, whatever.
You always hear people say “I didn’t think it would happen here.” Coloradans know different. Because it just keeps happening here, and we’re fucking sick of it.
Some prominent Eagles players, led by
@MalcolmJenkins
+
@JOEL9ONE
, have long expressed issues with administration policies re: policing, criminal justice, racial inequality and more. That's why there were protests in the first place.
So here’s an issue: The Broncos bye week now, here in week 5, wasn’t actually a bye. They practiced all week, including on Saturday. Bye week isn’t just about a Sunday off, but the consecutive days off for players and staff.
If you’re a sports writer thinking of making a “we don’t need locker room access anyway” post today, how about you just not. Health and safety is one thing, but arguing for less access overall is bad for all of us — and especially for our audience.
Millions of us live places where Stay-at-Home orders mean we can’t even see family that don’t live with us, so pardon me if I’m sick of the “it was just a small dinner party” stuff. Do you all want to have a football season or not?
PSA: If you’re old enough to have played Oregon Trail on floppy disk, and your child asks you to do a back somersault, do not under any circumstances attempt it.
Russell Wilson said he's watched all 17 of the Broncos' 2021 games two or three times in the past 10 days. That process started while he was on vacation with his wife.
"I decided, ‘Hey, I’m just going to go rogue here. If I can get one player to buy in, we’ll take a chance at this and see what can happen."
How players + frustrated league employees created the video that forced Goodell's hand. With

I was a senior at a Colorado high school during Columbine. It's shocking and depressing that nearly 20 years later, we haven't really fixed anything. Gun violence is an epidemic, and it's getting worse.
It is blatantly against media credentialing policies and basic sports journalism ethics to ask for autographs, let alone items from a game. Pretty bush league that this happened, and I hope the individual gets called out and credential revoked.
I saw this.. it’s disappointing. A member of the media in the locker room after the game asked if he could have my gloves for a charity benefit, so I said of course and I will even sign them for you! Well he got me, sold on eBay 3 days later..
The White House statement further confuses the anthem issue -- surely that's the point. Eagles players weren't skipping WH trip because Trump wanted them to stand.
This is the first free agent visit for CB Richard Sherman, and it happens today, per me and
@TomPelissero
. The Super Bowl champs looking at making a key addition right before their showdown with the
#Patriots
, and it puts them in prime position to do so.
When we talk about men being allies for women working in sports, and specifically in sports media, here's what we mean: 1) Amplify and share the work of your female colleagues 2) Listen when we say harassment happens 3) When you see it/hear it, speak up, don't laugh along.
I will add to this: What Antonio Brown has been through over the last year and a half was of his own doing, he hasn't taken accountability for it. He was given many chances in his media session today to do so, and didn't.
MLB made it official today, they removed THC, CBD and cannabis from the league's banned substances list. Players won't be tested for it. It's now on the level of alcohol...
During a ceremony for Army football at the White House, President Trump says he would like to allow athletes at military academies to postpone their service to pursue careers in pro sports.
"I would imagine that would make recruiting a little bit easier," he says to Jeff Monken
Hope Peyton Manning is able to break the news of the DT trade gently to his kids. One of the coolest things was watching DT with the mini Mannings as well as the families of the coaching staff. (This is DT with Marshall Manning after SB50)
I have so much respect for Sean McDermott and Zac Taylor and their players, and the broadcast ESPN crew, both in Cincinnati and Bristol, for how they've handled an impossible situation.
I am out of jokes about Urban Meyer.
Simply, his tenure was a spectacular disaster. Trevor Lawrence and the rest of the players on that roster deserve better.
Still missing from the
@astros
apology is how they f'ed up their initial statement. Yes, they should apologize for Taubman's behavior. But they need to specifically apologize for accusing
@stephapstein
of fabrication as well.
This is Jacob. In June of 2016, he comforted those affected by the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando. Four months ago he flew to Vegas to help families of 58 people grieve. Today, he is in Parkland, Florida hugging students who lost classmates yesterday. He is our third 15/10
I had a Super Bowl MVP vote last night. It felt impossible to choose, but I ended up voting for Aaron Donald because of the way he closed out the game, and how he led the pass rush that shut down the Bengals for most of the second half.
